This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the New York State standards and assessments on
the 5-6th grade levels. Course work focuses on a more global approach to academic curricula, the
philosophy and practice of interdisciplinary and thematic integrated curriculum and the skills that need to
be taught and infused into all subjects taught on these levels within the K-12 scope and sequence to
provide continuity and articulation. Instructional strategies and models, teaming of students and faculty,
grade-level configurations, and diverse assessments are emphasized.
CT 248A (70159): Middle Childhood Curriculum 7-9
This course emphasizes both teaching as a specialist in a subject area and understanding a more global
approach to academic curricula. The course includes the structures and curriculum approaches students
have already experienced and how to foster a smooth transition for students into a full teaming structure.
Course work focuses on the philosophy and practice of interdisciplinary and thematic integrated
curriculum and the skills that need to be taught and infused into all subjects taught on these levels within
the K-12 scope and sequence to provide continuity and articulation. The interdisciplinary nature of the
New York state standards and assessments is stressed.
Assigned Text and report: Judy Logan, Teaching Stories. You will write a critical response of 500 to
1000 words on one or more of her stories.
Please bring laptop to class each day. We will be preparing unit plans and projects based on national
Common Core standards, New York State content learning frameworks, and epTPA/APPR teaching
guidelines. I will distribute copies of Common Core, state frameworks, lesson plan outlines in class.
Final Grade is based on the Unit Packages. All work must be completed by July 18, 2015.

Wednesday, July 15 Visit to OBP Historical Restoration Site / Create a 10 to 12 photographic essay that
tell the story of life on Long Island during the early national period. Themes include work, structures,
institutions, and culture. / Work on Unit Plans
Thursday, July 16 Present OBP ppt / Meet Ms. Toliver / Algebra Project / Review New York State
Learning Frameworks / Discuss Judy Logan / Complete Unit Packages
Friday, July 17 Present and submit Unit packages
