Units of Instruction
Unit 1: Literary Nonfiction
This unit contains two parts, Part
1: Structures and Elements and
Part 2: Authors Purpose and
Style, and explores word parts
and context clues. Students read
a variety of literary nonfiction texts
and discuss authors style and
purpose by analyzing use of
organizational structures,
figurative language, tone, and
diction. Students create a
personal narrative with extension
focusing on the 6+1 Traits of
Writing- Ideas and Organization
and develop sentence fluency
through a study of sentences,
transitions, and verbs.
Newcomer and Beginner
students focus on nouns and
subject pronouns, present tense
and the verb be, possessive
adjectives, and subjects and
verbs.
Early Dismissal Days (2 1/2 hours early)

Expository and Procedural
This unit contains two parts, Part
1: Organizational Patterns and
Graphical Components and Part
2: Expository Essay, and
explores word parts, words in
context, analogies, and
connotation/ denotation of word
meanings. Students examine the
genre of informational texts and
identify main ideas and supporting
details, create summaries,
develop inferences supported by
text evidence, and examine
organizational patterns and
graphical components, relating to
authors style and purpose.
Students focus on the 6+1 Traits
of Writing- Organization and
Sentence Fluency to create an
expository essay and continue to
develop their style and voice
through the use of varied
sentence constructions.

Appeals and Part 2: Persuasive
Essay, and continues to explore

Students examine the genres of
persuasive texts and media,
analyzing an authors message or
claim, organizational patterns,
persuasive techniques, and an
authors use of appeals and
evidence. This unit reviews the
writing process through the
creation of a persuasive essay.
Students focus on the 6+1 Traits
of Writing- Word Choice, Voice,
and Conventions and further
develop Sentence Fluency
through a study of sentence types,
conjunctive adverbs, indefinite
pronouns, and transitions.
