Baritone/Tuba Lesson: Michael and Madison (baritone) Molly (tuba)

Lesson on 3/9

Lesson Context/Rationale:
- This is a combined lesson group and the first time all three of these
students have had a lesson together. Michael and Madison are both
strong baritone players. Molly used to play the baritone, but switched to
the tuba. Molly has an IEP and was having trouble reading her baritone
music. The tuba switch has really helped her and kept her enjoying
playing her instrument. The tuba generally has less notes, and we
thought it would a good change for her so that she can follow her music
more easily. I have also provided her with a highlighted fingering chart
that has highlighted the notes we are working on that she can keep with
her next to her music. One of her modifications is allowing extra time for
work, so I will allow her to practice on sections of the music while I am
working with the other students. This lesson will call for a lot of
differentiated learning while working with both the baritones and tuba,
who are at different levels. Michael has also begun working on the tuba
as an extra challenge, and I will have him try working on one of the easier
pieces on the tuba.

Lesson Goals:
- We will review the concert Bb scale in preparation for advanced band
later in the day. We will review Gently Touch the Sky and Baby Elephant
walk and begin work on Soul Express.

Objectives:
- swbat a concert Bb scale, in half notes, and in region style
- students will play m. 34 to the end in Gently Touch the Sky
- students will play 33- end in Baby Elephant Walk
- students will play m. 1-13 in Soul Express

Standards:
- 1.3.5.B.1 Sing or play music from complex notation
- 1. 3.8.B.2 Perform independently with expressive qualities appropriately
aligned with the stylistic characteristics of the genre

Procedure:
- as a Do Now, I will have Michael and Madison warm-up by buzzing some
of the exercises we have done on their mouthpieces. Molly will play the
Staff Wars game on the tablet using the bass clef setting. Though her
finger patterns are the same as the baritone on tuba, the notes she is
reading are much lower on the staff than she is used to. I will set the
range to focus on those notes.
- Together, the three of them will work on the concert Bb scale
o First we will play it in whole notes

o ok guys, you are going to be my test dummies for later in band

today, were going to try something new with the same scale
o I will demonstrate the Bb scale using the region style rhythm
We will then work on m. 34- end in Gently and 33 to the end in Baby
o I will expect Molly to have more difficulty with this review than
the other two, so I will periodically allow her her own time. I can
confidently send the other two players to work on another section
while I spend a couple minutes working with Molly. I can also
have Michael work on the tuba part in Gently.
We will then as a group work on the opening section to Soul Express
o I will have the three of them identify their pitches, which will serve
mostly to help Molly, but will also be a good review for the other
two players

Assessment:

- I will be looking for if Molly is progressing on her note recognition on the
tuba with her notes below the staff. I will have a small homework assignment that
will simply have her label different notes below the staff, as well as drawing the
notes in the correct location given the pitch names. Practicing for all three will be
review of the two older pieces, and pushing forward in Soul Express. Madison will
receive a more detailed practice instruction that will be given to her on her practice
log.
