Dear Residents of the South Downtown NRZ.and the Coalition to Strengthen the Sheldon/Charter Oak
Neighborhood:
Ttis my understanding that concerns were expressed at a recent community meeting over the number of
officers retiving from the Hartford Police Department and the effect those departures might have on the
strength of the force. Nothing is more important than the safety of all of our residents and | assure you
that there is no cause for concern,
Although 74 police officers are eligible for retirement by December 31, 2016, we only anticipate 47 of
them to retire. In addition, we are actively working on hiring new officers and have a class of recruits
currently in training and another class scheduled to begin in January of 2016, We expect to swear in $8
new police officers by the end of December 2016, which would grow the police department by 11
officers and bring the total number of sworn potice officers to 427.
Public safety continues to be a top priority in Hartford. The City will continue to ensure the needs of the
Hartford Police Department and of the community are met.
