Learning Objective: Students will be able to round decimals to any place, which includes

Dear Mr. Hakimian,
The math lesson you presented to the 5th grade was a continuation of a previous lesson. You
began the engagement for the lesson by reading the learning objective to the class, and then
providing a math message on the board for them to complete. In the message you asked the
children to round whole numbers to a certain place. Then you reviewed the problem with the
class.
You began the mini lesson by using the unlock the problem presented in the students
notebooks. The problem asked the children to round the decimal 0.386 to a certain place.
Children were asked to use the place value chart to assist them and you modeled ways in which
this could be completed. Children were asked to circle the digit in the place value to which they
want to round, and to underline the digit to the right of that place. You engaged the children in
this activity and they appeared to understand this method.
You provided formative assessment based in the responses they provided during the talk and
teach phase of the lesson. You worked with a small group of children who needed additional
support while the other children played the rounding game. You also were cognizant of those
who would be in need of re-teaching. At the conclusion of the lesson the children were provided
with an exit sheet and a homework assignment.
During out post observation meeting I asked you about assessment for the lesson. You stated that
you used spiraling and higher level questioning for the formative assessment, and recording
sheets and the game for summative assessment.
I was most impressed about your professionalism, maturity and preparation for this and all of the
lessons that I have observed this semester. You have been consistent, calm, and motivated. Your
movement around the classroom is indicative of your belief that you must be present to every
child in the class.
As you move from this student teaching experience to the beginning of your career as an
educator, I truly wish you all the best. The children will be fortunate to have you as their teacher
in the future.

Very sincerely,

Deborah I. King
Student Teaching Supervisor/Adjunct Professor
