Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection
NAEYC Standard:
STANDARD 7. EARLY CHILDHOOD FIELD EXPERIENCES
Field experiences and clinical practice are planned and sequenced so that candidates develop the
knowledge, skills and professional dispositions necessary to promote the development and
learning of young children across the entire developmental period of early childhood in at least
two of the three early childhood age groups (birth age 3, 3 through 5, 5 through 8 years) and in
the variety of settings that offer early education (early school grades, child care centers and
homes, Head Start programs). (NAEYC, 2010)
Brief Description of Evidence:
Throughout my career at Ivy Tech from 2010 to 2015 I have had many opportunities to work in
multiple classroom settings. In the spring of 2015, during my generalist practicum class, I was
able to work with elementary aged children in a public school setting. During the fall of 2013,
during my Preschool Practicum class, I was able to work with preschool aged children in a
licensed childcare setting. I also currently teach Sunday school for toddlers at my church. For
each of these areas I worked with children on furthering their development and growth by
providing various activities for them to participate in. The pictures I am providing show the
different age groups and settings that I have worked with.
Analysis of What I Learned:
From these experiences I have learned how I want to run my own classroom someday. I have
seen many examples as to what I want to do as a teacher as well as many ideas that I do not want
to implement into my future classroom. I was able to personally watch children grow and see
firsthand Eriksons eight stages of development in action. I learned how observe children and use
those observations to create hands on lesson plans. I then was able to utilize and implement those
lessons within the various classrooms. I also learned how to organize and hold parent teacher
conferences, supervise and monitored children of various ages learning, and how to assist
children with developing their social and problem solving skills.
How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:
This artifact demonstrates my competence by showing that I was able to develop the knowledge,
skills and professional dispositions necessary to promote the development and learning of young
children across the entire developmental period of early childhood by engaging myself with
children of various age groups. It shows that I was able engage with various groups of children
and adapt to the new settings each time. It shows that I was able to utilize the knowledge I have
gained from previous early childhood education classes to take into multiple classroom settings
and gain experience. In doing so I have gained even more knowledge on how to run a successful
classroom and someday a successful center.
