Name:
Krystal J. Woods
Grade:
7th
Subject:
Pre-Algebra
Technology Standards :
Technology Standard 2. Communication and Collaboration-Students use digital
media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at
a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of
others.

Materials:
notes for Semester 1, computers, SMARTboard or projector screen
Objectives:
1. TSWBAT review previously taught concept from Semester 1.
2. TSWBAT utilize Pixton website to create a comic strip that displays
comprehension of chosen mathematical topic.
3. TSWBAT work collaboratively in pairs to create and solve real-world
mathematical problems involving algebraic concepts.
4. TSWBAT explore technology as an opportunity to enjoy creating a
presentation that will prepare students for mid-term examination.

Procedures:
Opening the Lesson
Teacher triggers prior knowledge asking students to define vocabulary
associated with math concepts taught first semester. After various students
have responded in their own words students are asked to restate definitions in
their own words.

Exploring the Lesson

Teacher informs students of the lesson objectives. The Pixton website
Presentation will be viewed on the SMARTboard. The presentation and comic
strip requirements are discussed. Grading rubrics are presented and questions
are answered for clarity. Students are made aware of the benefits of working
collaboratively to create comic strip and also notified of the consequences of
rule breaking or unwarranted behavior. Teacher places students randomly in
pairs. Students are allowed time in the computer lab to explore Pixton site.
Wrapping the Lesson
Student pairs engage in discussions and each is allowed to make one comment
based on their exploration of the site or the lesson itself. Pairs receive a 2 and
1 comment sheet. These are often used as exit tickets and as opportunities to
quickly gage student learning and level of involvement in an activity. The 2
and 1 instructs students to list 2 features that they learned on the site and 1
thing that they either liked or did not quite comprehend. Student pairs may
sign-up up for computer lab times together and individually to complete
presentation by set due date. The daily homework assignment is for pairs to
compile a list of concepts that they wish to explore in the comic. From those
lists pairs will determine what concept they choose.
Following the Lesson
After the lesson, students will be closely assessed. Pairs will be required to
show parts of the comic on dates to be announced as teachers way of helping
to maintain focus and progression of the project. Each student will receive a
handout of the grading rubric.
