Course Description:

This course provides reinforcement in writing skills and in reading


fluency and comprehension skills. Reading and writing activities are
integrated to provide continuity and practical application.

Measurable Performance Objectives:


Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1. Apply explicit reading strategies and skills to improve fluency and comprehension.
1.1 Use content-specific vocabulary in discussions and responses.
1.2 Employ appropriate active reading strategies before, during, and after reading.
1.3 Demonstrate oral reading competencies.
1.4 Match reading rate to specific purpose and difficulty of material when reading aloud and
silently.
1.5 Recognize topic, main idea, and supporting details in college-level texts.
1.6 Identify authors purpose and tone in college-level texts.
1.7 Distinguish between fact and opinion in an assigned text.
1.8 Infer meaning from text.
1.9 Respond to readings through oral and written response.

Use explicit writing strategies and skills to plan, organize, and compose well-structured
essays and written responses.
2.1 Identify and use rhetorical modes.
2.2 Employ various planning and organizational strategies, including use of graphic
organizers, to prepare for writing.

3.1 Apply the steps in the process of writing summaries.
3.2 Use annotating, outlining, and comprehension skills to write summaries.
3.3 Compose effective summaries of college-level texts using appropriate documentation.

Evaluation Criteria/Policies:
Students will demonstrate proficiency on all Core Course Performance Objectives at least to the
75 percent level to successfully complete the course. The grade will be determined using the
College Grading System:
