Runninghead: Presentation of Assessment Findings
Presentation of Assessment Findings
The assessment presentation process can be quite interesting because parent emotions can
be elevated due strong convictions about the best course of action to pursue for their child. One
of the assessment findings presentation was for an 11 year old male. This presentation went
smoothly because the parents and the student especially wanted to discontinue the special
education services. The mother, teacher, and resource specialist agreed that the student was most
likely ready to exit. His scores across the board on the Woodcock Johnson IV Test of Cognitive
Abilities and the Woodcock Johnson IV Test of Achievements resulted in average abilities. The
processing tests such as the Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor IntegrationFifth Edition (VMI-5th), Test of Auditory Processing Skills Third Edition (TAPS-3), and the
Test of Visual Perceptual Skills 3rd Edition (TVPS-3) also resulted average abilities. The IEP
team agreed that the student no longer qualified for special education services.
The second presentation was for an initial evaluation requested by the parent. This
presentation didnt go as smoothly because the findings also indicated that the student did not
qualified for special education services. The mother became upset because she wanted her
daughter to receive services. I informed the mother that although her daughter did not qualify
for services many interventions existed that would help her daughter improve her academic
performance. The IEP team reviewed the recommendations in the psycho-educational report and
discussed what these interventions would look like in school and at home. To put the mother at
ease, the IEP team also assured that her daughter would continue to be closely monitored by the
teacher for academic progress.
The third presentation of findings was also emotionally charged because the student
ended up qualifying for special education services under Other Health Impairment (OHI) due to

attention deficits. The student is a male fourth grader and he showed diverse strengths and
weaknesses across intellectual areas, with verbal abilities falling in the Average range. Overall,
the student obtained a GIA cluster score of 91, which is in the Average range. Academic skills
range from Below Average to Above Average. The mother thought that this was the end of the
world and her level of concern was evident. The IEP team discussed the recommendations to
assist with attention and spoke with the mother regarding her apprehension of having her son
diagnosed with ADHD. I spoke about my personal experience with my son and assured her that
I understood how this information can frightful. However, because her son is young like mine
was many interventions exist to help him overcome his attention issues to improve his
academics.
