Tell them we are going to read a story about a boy who went to visit his grandma and
packed way too much in his suitcase!
Teaching/ Learning Procedures:
1. After the book, the teacher will show the short video defining needs and wants.
2. TTW discuss and clarify with the students the definition of needs and wants and
compare and contrast, as a group, what the boy needed versus wanted to bring to
Grandmas with a graphic organizer on the board.
3. TTW ask questions such as, Can you name something you need to live? Can you
name something you want? What did you need this morning to get to school?
4. TTW divide students into pairs and have them do a picture sort of needs versus wants.
5. TTW have the students draw a picture of something they need and want and explain
why to their small groups.
Formative Check (ongoing or specific):
Observe students responses and understanding level. Ask why its a need or want while
doing picture sorts. Observe small groups.
Reteach (alternative used as needed):
Work with students individually. Have more books they can look through explaining
needs and wants. Start with just one group of needs at a time such as food, and teach
them what foods they need versus want. After they know that, move on to another group
such as clothes.
Closure:
TTW choose several students to show their picture and read their explanation to the class.
Assessment/Summative Evaluation:
Beginning ELLs: Observe the students picture for accuracy of need v. want and expect
at least the ability to tell you accurately if its a need or want.
Intermediate ELLs: Observe the students pictures for accuracy of need v. want and
expect a detailed explanation of why.

Modifications/Notes:
Use the whole day to talk about needs and wants, such as items in their lunch, their
clothes, the playground equipment, and all the equipment in the school room to foster
appreciation.
