Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: When the gum is passed out, students are NOT to open the wrapper until
told to. They are NOT to eat it or taste it until directed. If at any time they are not following instructions properly
they will NOT get to eat the gum and will have to throw it in the trash.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: Remind the students that they WILL get to eat the gum as long as they listen and follow
directions.
Transition to Body: Pass out the worksheet. Pull up the worksheet on the SmartBoard. Have students put their name as
the scientist.

Body (20 min.):

Learning Activity #1: Before passing out the gum, have students open to the first page. Explain to then the rules of
having the bubble gum. They will not eat it before they are told to eat it. Explain to them the consequences of eating
the bubble gum too soon; they will throw it in the garbage and not get to eat it at all. As a class, discuss how the unchewed bubble gum can be described using 4 senses (Not Taste). Write these words down on the Smartboard. Have
the students copy the words down on their worksheet. Once the page is complete, the students will flip to the next
page in their booklet. Introduce the word hypothesis. Explain this this is a guess that we make from what we
already know about bubble gum. Have them guess if it will feel, look, smell and sound differently. They will circle
yes or no in their booklet for each of these 4 senses.
Assessments/Differentiation: Can the students accurately describe the bubble gum? Can they make a prediction about

Learning Activity #2: Have the students put the gum in their mouth. Remind them not to swallow it. Have them chew
it for one minute. Ask them how it tastes. Write these words down on the SmartBoard. Students will copy these
words on the it tastes like page of their booklet.
Assessments/Differentiation: Can the students accurately describe the taste of the bubble gum?

Learning Activity #3: Students will remove the gum from their mouth. Remind them not to throw it, put it on the
desks, or put it on each other. They will only hold their own gum with their own hands. They will touch, smell, listen
and look at the chewed bubble gum. They will describe the chewed bubble gum with new words. After the
