HUMA 1100 Music of the World

(2013 Fall)

Concert Report Guidelines


1. You are required to attend one live concert that is related to world music. The list of the
approved concerts have been posted on LMES.
2. You will have to submit a HARDCOPY version of your concert report (DO NOT SEND
SOFT COPY), stapled with the program and ticket.
3. The concert report, program and ticket is due on the last teaching lesson of the
semester, i.e. 28 November, 2013.
4. The concert report worths 15% of your total grade.
5. Concert report should be submitted in the following format,
a. Name of this course
b. Your name
c. Your student ID
d. Name of the concert
e. Date and venue
f. Name of performers
g. Your reflections to the concert
5. The report does not have to be long (800-1000 words)
6. Write what you hear and what you see in a concert, based on what you learn from
this course. This is a documentary of your learning experience. No online
references needed.
7. Try to use objective terminology to discuss musical structure and style. Discussion
includes the musical style, instrumentation, tonality, rhythm, texture, dynamics, use of
ornamentations etc.
8. Comment on the overall performance quality: accuracy, togetherness, balance,
communication among performers, appropriate interpretation of the style etc.
9. Comment on the stage presentation of the performers (and conductors, if there is one):
How were the performers dressed? Was the stage setting appropriate for the musical
genre? Was there anything unusual to the setting?

10.Comment on the audience: Age groups distribution: mainly students, middle-aged or


seniors? Were they enthusiastic about the performance? Did anyone fall asleep? How
did the audience react to the performance afterwards?
11.Comment on the duration: how long was the concert? Too long? Too short?
12.Comment on the concert program and program notes: How did you find the repertoire?
Did the program notes provide clear and sufficient information about the composer and
the music (if there is any)?
13.Let me know what you think: did you feel excited? How was it different (or similar) from
your other experiences in attending concerts?
14.You DO NOT have to include everything mentioned above, only pick those you
find interesting or special.
