Statement of Work

Project name: Competency based training for deep-sea oil exploration

Date: November 2, 2014
Project Manager: Georgia Harding
Project Tracking number: AVN0001
Project Justification
In a bid to combat the inevitable results of global warming and the resulting harm which can
lead to coral bleaching the Australian government has recognized the need to strike a balance
between harnessing environmental resources and sustainable development. The Australian Vocational Network, a government training agency, has been assigned the responsibility of upgrading the existing training standards in addition to introducing current best practices and
benchmarks to oil rig workers.
It is recognized that current as well as potential employees possess varying educational backgrounds ranging between high school and possibly university level. This recognition of learners
will therefore require the provision of learning experiences that will allow opportunities for tactile
and practical learning activities as well as the potential for self-paced learning.
Overview of deliverables
- The client has requisitioned the provision of modular learning objects that are reusable and
can also be used independently of each other.
- A request has also been made for interactive learning experiences that are provided in an online environment facilitated by a learning management system.
- In addition to being interactive, the learning experience should also provide opportunities for
learners to apply what they learn to real-world situations
- it is also expected that majority of the learning objects be non-proprietary and visually appealing.
Specific project objectives and success criteria
To identify suitable learning management system to facilitate training.
Develop authentic interactive learning objects
Create realistic learning experiences that require high levels of communication between
learners and instructors.
Solicit expert advice and make provisions for travel and accommodation arrangements
[2 persons at $1,500 each]

Project Close-out Checklist
Rationale statement
Third Eye Media was contracted by The Australian Vocational Network (AVN) to develop a suite
of web-based learning objects that would be included as part of a training program that would
offer competency-based training in deep-sea oil exploration and under water drilling for adult
learners that provided opportunities of interaction and authentic experiences.
The clients were not satisfied with the initial proof of concept submitted and were intent on
ending the contract with Third Eye Media. The Project Manager, Simon Wilcowski was able to
convince the clients that the short-comings could be rectified but internally, that meant
increasing the man-power available to work on the project to meet the new three-week deadline
that promised to produce 40% of the learning objects. To help with the increased workload and
remain within budget, Margaret used her connection with Professor Geoff Charles to recruit a
small team of students from the nearby University to work as interns/apprentices who would
gain practical experience from being part of the exercise while gaining themselves some extracredit.
The in-house SME, Joe Stickler, had a background in oil exploration, but was limited in his
knowledge of the technical nuances associated with the industry. It was assumed that Joe
would work as part of a team with Martin Howe, an expert in deep-sea exploration training,
alongside representatives from AVN who will set the technical specifications and project
requirements.

Team members
The team members who were assigned to work on the project included the following:
Instructional Design team- Conduct learner analysis then using feedback from SME design
instructional program for adult learners on deep-sea oil exploration and drilling.

details about deep-sea oil exploration and drilling. This will include instructional videos as well
as staged interviews addressing FAQs.

Training material design team - in consultation with the ID, and IT teams, develop resources that
will complement the instructional videos and web-based aspect of the learning objects.

generating purchase orders and disburse funds as well as monitor spending and provide
updates for potential overages.
Individuals assigned to AVN project
External contractors - Once given the go-ahead, to print where appropriate, proofs of learning
objects. DDS to record and edit instructional videos into small bite-sized episodes that can be
integrated at various points within the course as part of a face to face session or integrated into
the interactive web-based content.
