Subject/Topic/Activity: Math/ Word Problems with not enough, hidden or missing information
Lesson 6
1. Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.2-Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using
strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the
relationship between addition and subtraction.
2. Objectives:
Students will be able to recognize and solve word problems with hidden or extra
information.
Students will be able to recognize and solve problems with not enough information.
3. Materials:
Hard Cover Books
Math Notebooks
Pencils
4. Procedures:
Introduction:
Together, the class will work on page 277.
o The teacher will model thinking as they solve the first problem.
The teacher will show the students that as she reads the problem, there is
information that is not needed.
o The class will work on the next on together.
The students will tell the teacher if there is any extra information, what
that information is and why that information is not needed.
o The students will complete the rest of the page independently after the class
works on a few examples together.
The students will continue onto page 278.
o The teacher will once again model her thinking as they work on the first couple of
problems together.
The students will be shown that the information needed to answer the
questions is hidden in the word problem.
Body:
The students will move on to the next page.
o Together, the class will analyze the word problems.

They will be asked to think of what information the problem had and what
information the problem is missing.

Closing:
To conclude the lesson, the students will create their own word problem.
The students will be asked to write a word problem with hidden, extra or not enough
information.
The students will then trade the cards with a classmate.
o When solving the problem, the students must write what kind of problem the card
is and answer the question accordingly.
The students must write what information is needed if there is not enough
information
5. Assessment:
To assess the student, the teacher will review the problems they answered.
o The students must identify what type of word problem their classmate wrote and
solve the problem accordingly.

Subject/Topic/Activity: Math/ Write First Step Questions for Two Step Problems__________________________
1. Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.A.3-Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve
word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement
quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.D.8-Solve two-step word problems using the four
operations. Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the
unknown quantity. Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation
and estimation strategies including rounding.
2. Objectives:
Students will be able to write and solve first step questions for two step problems.
Students will be able to use first step questions and answers to solve two step problems.
3. Materials:
Hard Cover Books
Math Notebooks
Pencils
4. Procedures:
Introduction:
The students will be asked to describe what a two-step word problem is.
o The students will be encouraged to write their own word problem with two steps.
The teacher will model her thinking and think about why it is important to identify the
first step of a word problem.
o The teacher will identify and solve the first step.
o The teacher will then answer the question.
The students will then complete the rest of the page.
Body:
The students will be asked to continue onto page 282.
o The students will be told that these are two step word problem
o They will be asked to write the first step before solving the problem.
Closing:
The students will complete student activity card 5-7.
o The students will be asked to write a two-step word problem.
o The students will then solve the word problem and highlight or underline the first
part of the problem.
5. Assessment:
To assess the students I will look at the word problems they created.

o The students must have two step word problems and solve the word problems
correctly.

4. Procedures:
Introduction:
As the students enter the room, they will begin working on the Puzzled Penguin activity.
o The students will tell the Penguin if he is correct or not and then correct the
penguins answer.
o As the students wait for the rest of the class to finish the puzzled penguin, they
will work on the other word problems on the page.
The students should use an equation with a variable, a math mountain or
comparison bars to solve the problem.
The class will discuss the problem and explain how they corrected the answer.

We will review a few problems together.

o The students will share the method they used to solve the problem.

Body:
The students will discuss reasonable and not reasonable word problems.
o The students will use estimation or round to find out if the answer is reasonable.
The class will work on the first word problem together.
o The teacher will model different ways to solve the problem.
o Metal math strategies:
Sum that is close to 10 or 100
Numbers that can make 100
Numbers that end in zero
Make numbers that end in zero
The students will work on page 286.
o The students will determine if the word problem is reasonable or not and explain
their reasoning.
Closing:
The students will be given back the word problems they wrote during the previous
lesson.
o On the back, the students will write if the question is reasonable or not. The
students will be asked to determine what mental math strategy that can use to
answer the question.
5. Assessment:
The students will be assessed by their ability to explain if their word problem is
reasonable or not.
