They will be asked to think of what information the problem had and what
information the problem is missing.
Closing:
To conclude the lesson, the students will create their own word problem.
The students will be asked to write a word problem with hidden, extra or not enough
information.
The students will then trade the cards with a classmate.
o When solving the problem, the students must write what kind of problem the card
is and answer the question accordingly.
The students must write what information is needed if there is not enough
information
5. Assessment:
To assess the student, the teacher will review the problems they answered.
o The students must identify what type of word problem their classmate wrote and
solve the problem accordingly.
o The students must have two step word problems and solve the word problems
correctly.
Student Teacher: Angela Walter
School: Sunnybrae Elementary School
Date: April 2015
Period/Time: 60 Minutes
Grade: 3rd
Subject/Topic/Activity: Math/ Solve Two Step Word Problems/ Lesson 8
1. Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.A.3-Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word
problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by
using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the
problem.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.D.8-Solve two-step word problems using the four operations.
Represent these problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity.
Assess the reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies
including rounding.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.NBT.A.2-Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and
algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction.
2. Objectives:
Students will be able to represent and solve two step word problems.
Students will be able to assess reasonableness of answers using rounding and mental
math strategies.
3. Materials:
Smartboard
Math Notebooks
Students Hard Cover Book
Pencisl
4. Procedures:
Introduction:
As the students enter the room, they will begin working on the Puzzled Penguin activity.
o The students will tell the Penguin if he is correct or not and then correct the
penguins answer.
o As the students wait for the rest of the class to finish the puzzled penguin, they
will work on the other word problems on the page.
The students should use an equation with a variable, a math mountain or
comparison bars to solve the problem.
The class will discuss the problem and explain how they corrected the answer.
Body:
The students will discuss reasonable and not reasonable word problems.
o The students will use estimation or round to find out if the answer is reasonable.
The class will work on the first word problem together.
o The teacher will model different ways to solve the problem.
o Metal math strategies:
Sum that is close to 10 or 100
Numbers that can make 100
Numbers that end in zero
Make numbers that end in zero
The students will work on page 286.
o The students will determine if the word problem is reasonable or not and explain
their reasoning.
Closing:
The students will be given back the word problems they wrote during the previous
lesson.
o On the back, the students will write if the question is reasonable or not. The
students will be asked to determine what mental math strategy that can use to
answer the question.
5. Assessment:
The students will be assessed by their ability to explain if their word problem is
reasonable or not.
