Homework #9
1. The design conventions in drama include language, style,
formatting, sources, figures, images, captions, sentence
structure and even word choice. Design conventions are there to
help better portray what the author is writing about. They help
the author carry out their aims by creating images in the readers
head, and to help them better understand the writing and even
some time serve as persuasion. For example, if the genre is
about puppy adoption, writing a sad and lonely puppy would only
work so far, but instead an image of a sad and lonely puppy
would create more emotion in the reader. Design convention is
shaped by rhetorical situation by using the context of the event
or issue as a starting point and topic to design. (124)

want to eat and even if they will eat at the
restaurant. The combination of pictures, descriptions
and price all go into these decisions. The type of
food, Mexican helps to shape and grow this genre
menu. A different genre menu could be Italian food.
Cavas menu and Scordatos menu will be and are
very different. Some of the conventions could be

Shaun the Sheep Movie:

Vacation: http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/vacation-2015

The reviews of Shaun the Sheep Movie and Vacation share very similar
organizational patterns and rhetorical moves. Both reviews begin with
an introduction followed by either good or bad comparisons to other
movies. Multiple movies are referenced along with a description of the
producers previous movies. Next he reviews and summarizes the
movie. He goes over the good and bad parts of each movie. Also the
cast is discussed ending with a overall review statement of the movie.
These moves help carry out the writers aims by creating a very
thorough review of the movies. By comparing the movies he is
reviewing to other movies he is able to create connections and give the
reader something to compare the movie to, especially if they have
never seen the movie he is reviewing. The reviews are shaped by the
context, the summary of the movie and what it is about. (149)
