Untitled
His eyes had always shone so bright to me; I had always
(1) perceived
them as my most
precious gems. But as I looked into them today, the emeralds suddenly looked like the leaves of a
dying tree on a cloudy day.
Hey, I said softly.
Hey, he said, without meeting my eyes.
Whats wrong?
Um, nothing.
His eyes finally met mine, and I raised my eyebrows.
I was just thinking about our future. He smiled sadly as he spoke.
What about it?
Im just going to miss you.
Ill miss you too. But dont worry. Its only two
(2) months; and
we still have another week
before I go to camp. And we have a few days when I get back before school starts.
He stayed quiet, keeping himself busy by kicking the small rocks on the ground.
Why arent you saying anything? Everything will be fine.
He still didnt say anything. I was sure he could hear my heart beating in my chest. I felt my
palms starting to sweat.
Im sorry, I almost whispered.
He shook his head. No. You didnt do anything wrong.
So whats the matter?
I was thinking about our future.
Yeah. And?
I dont know if there is one for us anymore.
My heartbeat
(3) assuaged.
I tried to breathe. What?
My dads job is getting relocated.
My breathing grew shallow. I couldnt feel the rhythm of anything. Where?
Im moving to California. This summer.
My heart stopped. My vision grew blurry as I felt the warm droplets running down my face,
turning cold as the icy breeze blew in my direction.
I couldnt think straight. I had so many questions and so many things to say, but I didnt know
where to begin. Um What day do you leave?
August 15.
August 15.
Yes.
Are you sure?
Yup.
August 15, as in, the day I get back from camp?
Yeah, he whispered.

The only other thing I remembered was that that day was the last time he kissed me, and the

we embraced goodbye, I felt my life disappearing before
me; the day we admitted our feelings in the eighth grade, our first kiss, our plans to go to prom
