Realizing Full Potential through Integrated Process and Energy Architectures
Quamie N. Mortley, PhD Energy Consultant, UC Rusal Jamaica, Ewarton, St. Catherine, Jamaica Telephone: (876)-880-7597 e-mail: qnmortley@yahoo.com Energy is the lifeblood of an industrial site and typically makes up the largest percentage of operating cost in Jamaica. To meet production and quality goals, energy in the form of steam, electricity, and other utilities must be reliably delivered to site processes. Rising energy costs and increased emissions regulations are putting pressure on manufacturers that make it difficult to remain competitive. This paper examines some of the requirements for industrial energy management. The industrial sector faces significant challenges in managing energy use. While the opportunities for energy efficiency improvements are many, it requires an integrated system approach to unlock the full potential of energy savings. The use of an open, collaborative architecture that links process and energy monitoring systems, supported by energy expertise, will help industry optimize productivity and profitability, while meeting energy efficiency goals. An energy management system is an interacting series of processes that enables an organization to systematically achieve and sustain energy management actions and energy performance improvements. It provides the processes and systems needed to incorporate energy considerations and energy management into daily operations as part of organizational strategy for improved performance. ISO 50001 is an International Standard that specifies requirements for an energy management system. The requirements are used to establish and implement a PLAN-DO-CHECK-ACT continual improvement system for managing energy and achieving energy performance improvements. ISO 50001 can be implemented, regardless of the types of energy used. Based on the common elements of ISO management system standards, ISO 50001 has a high level of compatibility with ISO 9001 quality management systems and ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
