Theatre 1 Open Disclosure

Course Description

Welcome to Theatre1 its going to be a great semester! Theatre is a fun and


productive way to learn responsibility, confidence, teamwork, self-evaluation
skills and more. This introductory course will help students to better appreciate
and understand the wide world of theater.

Course Goals and Objectives

This class is designed to meet the specific Core Curriculum standards set by the
Utah State Office of Education: www.usoe.k12.ut.us. The Core Curriculum
standards are: script writing, acting, ensemble/rehearsal techniques, and
constructing meaning.
Students will have several opportunities to perform in the classroom, plus the
final class performance.
Students will learn proper performance techniques, audience etiquette, basic
script writing skills, theatre terminology, and improvisation skills.

Course Materials

Each student will need a folder in which to keep assignments and vocabulary
sheets.
Pen or pencil! Students must be sure to have a writing utensil with them each
day for written assignments.

Course Requirements

Participation. Participation, participation, participation!


Students who participate, do their best, and have a good attitude will walk out of
this class with- not only a good grade- but increased theatrical skills and some
amazing experiences as well!
Students are expected to follow class rules. When rules are followed, students
will earn privileges. Students not following rules will be issued demerits, which
will lead to loss of privileges and participation points.
Students will need to keep up to date with their assignments. Some homework
assignments will revolve around memorization of scripts. When students dont
keep up on memorization, they hold back their own progress as well as the
progress of everyone in their group.

Grading Procedures

The grading scale will be as follows:


Participation- 50%
Concerts, Assignments- 50%
Participation- Each student will start the week with 50 participation points (10
per day).
o Students who come with all required materials, maintain a good attitude
and participate throughout the class will keep all of their points. Its that
simple!
o Students cannot receive participation points for days they are absent.
The first four absences will not count against their grades.
o Gum is against both school and classroom rules (students cannot
fully participate in vocal exercises with gum) and will count for an
automatic five point deduction from participation points.
Tests, quizzes, performances, and assignments will be assigned throughout the
semester.
o Classroom performances are mandatory. Any student who
chooses not to perform may not be allowed to move on to future unitsleading to a loss of all assignment points and possible failure of the
course.
o Missed quizzes must be made up within one week. Re-takes are allowed
(also within a week) but will be penalized 5%.
o Any assignment due a day the student is absent must be turned in the day
the student returns. Students must write absent on top of these
assignments. Late work will be accepted with a penalty. Late work will
be worth 80% the first week and 50% after that. Long-term absences will
be dealt with on an individual basis.
