Mojito Prodigy Mojito Apr 18, 2013 3:54 AM Hello all, I have a university project consisting in making a force transducer composed of one LVDT and a spring. i'm currently looking for a LVDT signal conditioning circ uit to make and I have stumbled upon these two chips (AD598 and AD698) All I need is a 10V DC output at 17bit resolution so I can convert it to Digital . I also need to know if the core is one the right or the left, I suppose that y ou can do that by the absolute value of the output coupled by the value of the p hase. Correct me if I'm wrong, this all quite new to me. From what I understand the two chips process the information differently, but th e output is exactly the same. So what's the point of making two chips that do th ings differently to get the same result. Unless the ADS98 has different applicat ions compared to the AD698? TLDR: Basically 1 need to know how far the core has traveled so I can determine through the spring constant how much force has been applied. So which one is bes t suited for my case, knowing that I need as much resolution and accuracy as pos sible (no noise or phase lag or whatever) Thanks in advance Samuel ShaneOCorrect Answer by ShaneO on Apr 18, 2013 7:12 AM Hi, You are correct in that the output of both parts, the ADS98 and AD69B, are the s ame but the parts are designed to work with different LVDT sensors. The AD598 is designed to work with a S-wire LVDT which has a (A-B)/(A+B) transfe r function. The AD698 is designed to work with a d-wire or 3-wire LVDT which have @ A/B tran sfer function. So the choice of component, AD598 or AD698 depends on the sensor you are using. Either part will give a 0 to 10V output but the accuracy is not at the 17-bit le vel See the answer in context 393 Views Tags: ad698Content tagged with ad698, ad598Content tagged with ad598, IvdtContent tagged with Ivdt Correct Answer 1, Re: AD598 vs AD698 Ivdt application differences ShaneO Academic ShaneO Apr 18, 2013 7:12 AM (in response to Mojito ) Hi, You are correct in that the output of both parts, the ADS98 and AD69B, are the s ame but the parts are designed to work with different LVDT sensors. But one final question, are t here any pros or cons using the (A-B)/(A+8) TF over the A/B TF and vise versa or does it not have any importance whatsoever? If you have a choice then the ADS98 due to the way it operates doesn't need to compensate for phase shifts between the exci tation and the feedback signal. This may need to be handled externally by discre te components in the AD698. The phase shift is also sensor dependant so with the AD698 it may not be an issu e.
