The Wake
Throughout our lives, well grow old and our hairs
will turn gray. Even though we live in the digital
age, the print yearbook takes passion and
commitment. The function of a yearbook is to keep
the memories youll eventually forget and look back
and see how much everyone around you grew.

Annapolis High School Yearbook Staff Handbook

Why be a part of Yearbook?

o Gain real-life journalism, photography, design, business, advertising, and sales skillsbuild
your resume and college applications while getting a grade for it.
o Be a part of documenting historythis book stays in A-High forever!
o Be a part of something: We wear badges, we take the pictures, we interview the students, we
ARE the yearbook.
We are leaders. We have to be
o Work together with students from all over the
positive, dedicated, students that
school to produce something fantastic.
represent the school and student
o Build academic skills without even realizing it
o Get to have a say in what happens in the book!
body.
What does it take to be a successful staffer at the AHigh YB Company?
o AttendanceYou cant help with the yearbook if you arent here. Attendance is
MANDATORY and all absences must be EXCUSED. If your absence is unexcused, you
will receive a zero for that days work session (which is a large portion of your grade).
o Dedicationthis experience is rewarding, but its not easy. You must be willing to work
before, during, and after school hours if needed. Snow days mean nothing to a yearbook
staffer.
o Teamworkthe book only succeeds as well as the staffers and advisors work together
within the work hours as well as outside of school hours. We are truly only as strong as our
weakest staffer, so we need to work together to lift everyone up to the point of success.
o Responsibilityyour name becomes a part of this book, so you have to be dedicated to
make it the best it can be; it represents YOU! You are responsible for its successor its
failure.
o Organizationevery page is mapped out from start to finish, and most of the yearbook is
DONE before winter break. Knowing when and where youre supposed to be, and what
youre supposed to be doing, and who you are supposed to be talking to, and a general sense
of what is going on is IMPERATIVE to your success as a staffer. There is no such thing as
forgetting to do something.
o Attention to Detaileverything from a photos crop to a placement of a comma matters,
so you have to be able to look closely and critically at every page before its submitted.
o Ability to Communicate and Socialize (appropriately)we have to be able to get the
word out about the yearbook, and we have to be able to interview EVERYONE, and not
just our friends. To get the best stories and pictures, staffers cant be afraid to talk to people
and get the scoop.
o Hard Workin case the above qualities and the following handbook dont get this point
across already, it takes a lot of hard work to make the yearbook the best it can be. Staffers
work far beyond what normal students do, often at home, during lunches, and even on
snow daysBUT, it is all worth it in the end.

Annapolis High School Yearbook Staff Handbook

Here you will find a general hierarchy of jobs. Senior Editors are directly supervised by the advisor, and SEs
then are responsible for all other staffers. Underclassmen editors are directly supervising anyone in their team,
and then have the authority to make decisions for any pages including underclassmen (which are nearly all of
them). Photo and Design Editors directly supervise their team members, and are also responsible for any and all
pages involving photographs (which are all of them!). The same goes for Copy Editors. The Business
Department is often working side-by-side but on different projects; however, they will be responsible for
layouts when necessary.

Copy EditorA Note from The First Grammar Guru: Thomas Smith: Firstly, the title of any person holding this job shall be Chief Executive
Supreme Ruler of the Grammar Department. If my associates should see fit to change the title of this job description, please disregard their
attempt to thwart me and change the title back. There are many privileges that are associated with this prestigious title, the most notable one of
which is choosing the manner in which you tell your friends that they are wrong. On the work side of this job, you will be in charge of reading things
(captions, descriptions, ect.) that others have written for inclusion in the yearbook and proof-read them for grammatical mistakes. Although the
severity of their sins may merit a fitting degree of wrath on your part, I have found in my experience that it is wise to refrain from yelling at your
peers. Not only does it benefit your relationship with the writer and keep the atmosphere of the room in general comfortable and happy, it
decreases their chances of being so afraid of your criticisms that they neglect you any future opportunities to ridicule them for their flaws. There
will periodically be a request for you to write a paragraph for the yearbook; complete these assignments when you get them and put forth your
best work. There is nothing more embarrassing than allowing the frustrated masses to detect that your own writing is not up to the same standards
that you hold them to. Fortunately, this has never been a problem for me because I am perfect in every way, and my syntax is impeccable.
However, being as flawless as I am, I cannot help but anticipate how such a situation could be problematic to my successor. Other than that, I wish
you good luck in living up to the deific level of standards that I have set for the person who replaces me. As a couple of final pieces of advice, never
use thesaurus.com because the words that your brain generates will always be better, and refrain from making friends in class because it will only
hurt more when you inevitably offend them with your harsh critiques. Also, have a good sense of sarcasm.Thomas Smith, Grammar Guru, 2014

A General Smattering of Profound Yearbook Thoughts

A yearbook is crucial to capturing a year, a legacy that will last forever.
Its a team of students that constantly work together to make the best yearbook that they can create.
I want all of AHS to die for this yearbook.
Throughout our lives, well grow old and our hairs will turn gray. Even though we live in the digital age, the print
yearbook takes passion and commitment. The function of a yearbook is to keep the memories youll eventually forget
and look back and see how much everyone around you grew.
To be a yearbook staff member is an honor. Im working with some of the schools best people, who are awesome, and
soon the whole school will know it.
I am so thankful for joining yearbook and would never go back!
Being a yearbook staff member to me means that I am part of a team that will make some of the students really happy
when they get their yearbook.
A yearbook can affect peoples emotions; its not just about the pictures. We create a year of memories.
To be a yearbook staff member means you are willing to work hard to make something awesome; youre willing to put
so much effort into something to not only please yourself, but a whole bunch of students who look forward to seeing
the whole year in a book.
Memories are important, and time is of the essence.
Being a yearbook staff member is like being a journalist and working for a magazine.
I have the ability to bring out the good things about Annapolis and showcase them for all to see.
I have grown. At first I didnt know how to take the responsibility, but now that I do, I love it!
Yearbook has really helped me learn organization, creativity, responsibility, and team work!
Pictures, pictures, more pictures. #morepictures.
Yearbook is stressful, definitely, but its a good stress. It teaches you how to be responsible, meet deadlines, how to
interview, etc.
Its so official; you are a part of something that people will hold on to and cherish forever.
We are leaders. We have to be positive, dedicated, students that represent the school and student body.
