This is the academic dishonesty policy printed on all master syllabi. Please make sure you go
over this with your students on the first day of class. Also, please take the time to clarify with
your students what academic dishonesty means in your class. Never assume students know.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY:
Academic dishonesty includes cheating on tests or assignments, submitting work completed by others, using
the same work to fulfill requirements for multiples classes or plagiarizing. Plagiarism is defined as committing
literary theft by attempting to pass off the ideas or words of another as one's own without crediting the source
(http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plagiarize). All completed work must be in the students own
words and must cite the source of the idea where applicable.
Results of an academic dishonesty finding:
Any student who acts dishonestly will be required to meet with the dean of students and will be subject to one
of the following actions:
A grade of zero for the work in question
A failing grade for the course
Expulsion from school
Multiple findings of academic dishonesty will lead to increasing levels of sanctions up to and including
permanent expulsion from school. If a student wishes to appeal disciplinary actions such as these, he or she
must follow the grievance policy found in the student handbook and in the school catalog.
Work Originality
Students are expected to write their essays and assignments during this quarter. You may NOT
use papers you wrote for other classes or in previous writing classes or in previous attempts to
pass this class.
All essays, research papers, homework assignments, journal entries, in-class assignments, and
other work assigned must be written during this quarter.
You may not use a paper from another class during this quarter in this class or use a paper from
this class in another course without the written permission of all instructors involved.
Please note: Only the argumentative research paper in this class requires research. I strongly encourage
you to write from your own experiences for the other papers in order to avoid plagiarism. If you do
choose to do research for one of the other essays, you are expected to use proper APA citation and
references even though we will not have gone over them together in class yet.
Academic Dishonesty
Students are expected to do their own work on all class assignments and write using their own words and
ideas, not the words and ideas of others. In this class, plagiarism and cheating include but are not limited to
the following:
1. Copying a phrase, sentence, paragraph, or essay from another source (such as the Internet or a
book) without putting quotation marks around what you copied.
2. Putting quotation marks around quoted material but failing to give the citation and reference
information of where the information came from.
3. Including reference information at the end of a paper but not including in-text citations to show
what sentences or pieces of information came from each source.
4. Researching information (such as looking up information on the Internet) and using that
information in your paper without using proper APA citation.
5. Using information or ideas from any source without giving the proper in-text citation.
6. Putting your name on an assignment someone else did.
7. Having the exact same wording on any part of an assignment as another student when the
assignment called for original thought.
8. Cutting and pasting sentences from the piece your read and putting those sentences together to form
a summary paragraph without using quotation marks or proper APA citation.
9. Using a paper you wrote in a previous attempt to pass this class or in another class without
Michelles express permission to do so.
All your major papers this quarter will be checked for plagiarism. If you plagiarize, your grade and your
student record will suffer.
Per the Globe University/Minnesota School of Business Student Handbook page 132, students who are
found to have acted dishonestly academically will be required to meet with the dean of students and be
subject to one of the following actions:
A grade of zero for the work in question
A failing grade for the course
Expulsion from school.
SafeAssign
Within CampusConnect you have the ability to run students papers through a plagiarism checker. However,
the papers have to be submitted electronically. Please see the attached directions about how to run a paper
through SafeAssign.
