Learning
Objectives
By
the
end
of
this
lesson
students
will
have
the
opportunity
to
demonstrate
their
ability
to:
Divide
shapes
into
a
variety
of
fractions
Recognise
halves,
quarters,
thirds,
fifths
and
their
multiples
to
a
whole
Make
connections
between
halves
and
quarters
Resources
The
following
resources
will
be
required:
Cassowary
fractions

Student
Prior
Knowledge
Prior
to
this
lesson,
students
should
already
be
able
to:
Recognise
halves,
thirds,
quarters
and
fifths
Identify
parts
of
a
whole
Recognise
the
importance
of
equal
parts
Explain
and
identify
fractions
equal
to
half
Recognise
the
numerator,
denominator
Understand
that
as
the
denominator
gets
bigger
the
size
of
the
pieces
get
smaller

Introduction
Gain
students
attention
Direct
students
to
sit
in
their
carpet
spots
Remind
them
to
use
whole
body
listening
Explain
that
they
will
be
looking
at
different
shapes
to
explore
fractions
Show
students
the
cassowary
game
resource
Choose
the
circle
shape
ask
for
a
volunteer
to
do
the
first
part.
Then
ask
for
different
volunteers
to
complete
the
activity
for
that
shape.
Then
repeat
with
a
range
of
different
shapes.
Explain
that
they
will
now
be
doing
an
activity
where
they
have
to
make
enclosures
for
animals
in
a
zoo.
Ask
the
students
to
return
to
their
desks
and
for
the
hand-
out
helpers
to
hand
out
the
cassowary
sheets.

Lesson
Content
Ask
students
to
get
out
a
red,
blue,
green
and
orange
coloured
pencil
or
pen.
Ask
them
to
not
point
to
the
hippos.
Explain
the
first
example:
o First
you
have
to
decide
how
many
parts
or
enclosures
you
will
need
look
at
the
denominator-
so
for
the
hippos
we
need
to
split
the
circle
into
quarters
o Then
look
at
each
fractions
for
the
animals
and
colour
in
the
fraction
that
they
will
live
in
eg.
the
first
two
hippos
have
two
quarters,
it
is
in
red
so
we
will
colour
two
quarters
in
red.
The
other
two
have
half,
so
you
would
colour
in
half
in
the
colour
given.
Ask
students
for
any
questions
if
needed
do
the
next
one
together
Allow
time
for
students
to
complete
the
rest
of
the
sheet
answering
any
questions
they
have.
Lesson
Conclusion
When
all
students
have
finished
the
task
go
through
and
mark
the
answers
Ask
students
to
stick
their
sheet
into
their
math
books
Use
the
countdown
technique
to
clean
up
materials
and
get
ready
for
first
break.
Hand
out
special
stickers
to
students
who
focussed
really
hard
during
the
lesson
Differentiation
Put
Hearing
Aid
device
on
for
student
with
Low
hearing.
As
a
focus
strategy
ask
for
whole
body
listening.
Use
hands
on
heads
to
move
on.
Guide
them
if
they
do
not
understand
Take
note
of
students
who
deserve
a
special
sticker
for
focus
and
hard
work
during
the
activity.
Support
students
who
are
likely
to
be
unfocussed
and
ensure
each
student
is
on
task.
Assessment
Assessment
of
Learning
o Students
will
demonstrate
their
gained
understanding
from
the
fractions
unit
to
complete
a
test
focussing
on
identifying
and
demonstrating
fractions,
and
the
relationship
between
halves
and
quarters.
Evaluation
Can
students:
! Divide
shapes
into
a
variety
of
fractions
! Recognise
halves,
quarters,
thirds,
fifths
and
their
multiples
to
a
whole
! Make
connections
between
halves
and
quarters
