Course Objectives:

Whereas continuous processes are analytically tractable in an elegant manner, most real
life situations present themselves as comprising of discrete variables. It is therefore
essential to have knowledge of discrete mathematics in one's tool-kit

This course is meant to deeply familiarize the students with difference equations and their
solution techniques

It also deals with concepts and techniques of graph theory, and Lattices

Unit I
Difference equations with constant coefficients : Difference equation, Solution
of a difference equation, Homogeneous linear difference equations with constant
coefficients, Linearly independent solutions
Unit II
Difference equations with variable coefficients : Solution of the nonhomogeneous equation, Linear difference equations with variable coefficients,
Nonlinear difference equations, Methods of finding particular solutions
Unit III
Relations : Relations and their properties, Equivalence relations, Partial ordering
relations, Lattice, Sublattice, Bounded Lattice, Hasse diagrams, Maximal and minimal
elements
Unit IV
Graphs : Graph terminology and special types of graphs, Graph isomorphism, Paths,
cycles and connectivity, Euler and Hamilton paths, Shortest path problems, Planner
graphs, Graph coloring
Unit V
Trees : Tree graphs, Rooted trees, Binary search trees, Spanning trees and cut sets,
Minimum spanning trees
Unit VI
Number theory and cryptography : Divisibility, Greatest common divisor,
Congruences, Cryptography, Least common multiples
Combinatorics : Permutations, Combinations
