Explanation of Math Homework Choice Board

Salute- This game helps students practice adding (or multiplying) and finding the
missing addend (or factor). This is a game for three players. (but you can alter the
game for 2 players) Remove the face cards from a regular deck of cards (ace
represents one). Deal out the cards evenly to two players who sit facing each other;
each holds the stack of cards face down. The third player sits where s/he can see
the other two players. When the third player says Salute, the two players with
cards simultaneously take the top cards off their respective piles and hold them on
their foreheads with the face of the card outwards so that they can only see the
other persons card. The third player announces the sum (or product for a more
advanced version) of the two cards. Each of the two players holding a card tries to
be the first to announce the number on his own card (which he cannot see). The
winner takes both cards. Rotate players so everyone gets a chance to be the one
who says, salute, and gives the sum and product.
Facts- Write 15 subtraction, addition or multiplication facts. (ie: 2+5=7; 6-1=5; 2 X
6=12)
Fact Families- Fact Family is a collection of related addition. and subtraction facts,
or multiplication and division facts, made from the same numbers. For 7, 8, and 15,
the addition/subtraction fact family consists of 7 + 8 = 15, 8 + 7 = 15, 15 - 8 = 7,
15 - 7 = 8. For 2, 6, and 12, the multiplication/division fact family consists of 2 X
6=12; 6 X 2 =12; 12/6=2; 12/2=6.
Story problems- Write 3 addition/subtraction or multiplication problems. (It can be
any combination type of problems, like 2 addition and 1 multiplication or all
subtraction etc.) (ie: John had 7 cars and shared 2 with Sarah. How many cars did
John have left? Answer: 5 cars)
Arrays-Choose your multiplication problems first, then draw the array. You may also
draw an array and decide which multiplication problem it represents.

Song/Poem- Example:

Skip Count: Choose 3 factors. (I want to skip count by 10s today. 10, 20, 30, 40,
50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200)
Quiz- Write a quiz. It should be challenging for your child whether it be single digit
or double digit. It also can be handwritten.

Teach- Choose a factor. Lets say 5. Decide what strategy you want to teach. Lets
say skip counting. Then teach it to someone. (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 etc) They should
teach it and not just skip count.

Flash Cards- You can buy flash cards from the dollar store, you can download them
from the internet http://www.aplusmath.com/Flashcards/FlashcardCreator.html, play
games using flashcards on the internet (example internet game:
http://www.factmonster.com/math/flashcards.html), download an app or you can
make your own on paper or index cards.

Number line-

Picture- Draw pictures to help you solve words problems. The grouping strategy is
for multiplication.
