football coach Randal Montgomery didnt have a solution.
However, as his first season with the Falcons looked
like it was going to end
without a playoff appearance, the veteran coach was
aware he had a problem.

Montgomery we thought
(with a win)
we could make the playoffs
because the schedule was
favorable the rest of the way.
When you get to the end of
the season, that is what kept
us from getting in. It was the
turning point of the season.
Up to the point, we had
tried it with older guys and
simply had not gotten it
done. We decided if we were
going to lose, we were going
to do it with the younger
guys playing. Hindsight is
20-20. Maybe we should
have played the younger
guys earlier. It was certainColumbus High School ly the turning point moving

Columbus High School junior running back Kylin Hill will

team with Kendre Conner to give the Falcons a solid
one-two punch.

in the weight room, on the

practice field, and on game
nights.
A lot of young guys
were put in the fire right
away and we should benefit
from that. I think we will be
a better team offensively
and defensively. We will be
bigger, stronger and faster.
Gholar knows what
Montgomery expects. He
also knows the expectation
of his classmates.
There is a lot of pressure on this team, Gholar
said. (The fans) saw what
we did at the end of the
year. They expect (the success) to roll over. We have
to keep the intensity going
into the season.
Helping fuel the Falcons hopes are junior running backs Kendre Conner
and Kylin Hill. Gholar calls
the duo the two best running backs in the nation.
Montgomery also notes the

offensive line will be one of

the best Columbus has had
in years.
Our running backs can
hang with the best, Gholar
said. They are tough both
mentally and physically. All
of us have been playing together for a long time. We
have a special bond on offense. The line is going to
be great. They have worked
real hard during the offseason. You can tell they are
bigger and stronger.
I like being behind
a good line because that
makes my job easier.
On defense, Columbus
will move from a 4-2-5 to a
3-4 alignment this season.
Deloach will anchor a unit
that also made strides at
the end of last season. However, the biggest plus Montgomery has found is depth.
After dressing 55 players
for last seasons finale, 75
players took part in the first
day of fall camp.

Chris McDill/Special to The Dispatch

Columbus High School junior quarterback C.J. Gholar

gained valuable experience last season, guiding the
Falcons to a 3-1 finish.

For the most part, competition brings out the best

in you, Montgomery said.
If you are No. 1 on the
depth chart and No. 2 is
just as good, that is going to
bring out the best in you. If
you are No. 1 and No. 2 is
on not your level, you have a
tendency to put it on cruise
control. The biggest challenge has been developing
depth. We finally have competition for spots, and that
really raises the bar for everybody on the team.
Columbus knows the
bar will be raised in terms
of competition, too. Reclassification by the Mississippi High School Activities
Association moved Columbus from Class 6A, Region
2 to Class 6A, Region 1.
The new region includes
reigning state champion
South Panola, Southaven,
Tupelo, and Olive Branch.
DeSoto Central, Hernando,
and Horn Lake round out

the region.
If you look back at last
year, there is only one game
where we didnt compete
(a 43-0 loss at Starkville),
Montgomery said. Versus Clinton we were down
three almost at the half and
gave up a long kickoff return. We didnt know how
to finish. We didnt know
how to finish drives, how
to finish games. Those are
the kinds of things that we
will be better at this year.
The talent level will be
higher. The focus will be
higher, too. We have a better understanding of what
we are trying to do. The
region will be tough, but
you just have inherit the
challenge.
Gholar is aware of the
challenge. He also is confident in his teammates.

a closer look
QUARTERBACK
C.J. Gholar (Jr.)
n Gholar is a returning starter
after drawing the final four starts
of last season. A converted wide
receiver, Gholar won three of his
four starts and will benefit from
the repetitions as the teams No. 1
quarterback in spring practice.
We are going
to ride with C.J.,
and we think he
can carry us a long
way, Columbus
High coach Randal
Montgomery said.
He had played
some quarterback
in middle school, so
Gholar
switching back to
that position a year
ago wasnt that big a deal. He got
some really good experience and
has really worked at becoming a
leader.
RUNNING BACKS
Kendre Conner (Jr.),
Kylin Hill (Jr.)
n Both were
major contributors
a year ago. Montgomery said Hill
has added about 20
pounds since last
season. Both are
Hill
considered bruising
backs, with good
speed and physicality.

We should be stronger physically in the backfield this season,

Montgomery said. We have some
backs who shouldnt be stopped on
that first contact.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Marquavious Mitchell (Sr.),
Michael McCloud (Soph.),
Patrick Jackson (Soph.)
n For the most part, this is a
young, unproven group. Gholar said
work with the wide receivers would
be the most important thing taking
place during fall practice.
The biggest growth we need to
start the season will be at receiver, Montgomery said. We are
young there, so it is going to take
a little time to gather that game
experience.
TIGHT ENDS
Christopher Deloach (Sr.)
n A standout on the defense,
Deloach will see more playing time
on offense this season. The Falcons wont play a tight end often.
However, Deloach will be there to
fill that role.
Christopher is one our few
two-way players, Montgomery said.
He is a dynamic game-changer.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Michael Bailey (Sr.),
Stephen Wilkerson (Sr.),
Jarious Ross (Jr.),
Laquinston Sharp (Jr.),
William James (Sr.), Denzel
Beckwith (Jr.), Devagus Jenkins
(Sr.), Leonardo Dismuke (Jr.)

n Montgomery feels this group

has made the most improvement
since last season. The Falcons
have more depth, with as many as
eight or nine players getting regular
playing time.
This group has really come a
long way, Montgomery said. A
year ago, we didnt have a lot of
depth on the line and some injuries
really hurt us. This year, we will be
able to alternate and keep some
players rested without a drop off in
production.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Christopher Deloach (Sr.),
Tahj Sykes (Jr.),
Cameron Williams (Sr.)
n The Falcons return experience
at all three defensive line positions,
while making a switch from a 4-2-5
alignment to a 3-4 alignment.
The kids have been excited
about the change on defense,
Montgomery said. It has taken a
while to get used to some things,
but we are getting there. We have
a lot of experience on the line. This
group plays well together.
LINEBACKERS
Mario Bradford (Sr.),
Damonta Kidd (Sr.),
Christopher Blair (Jr.),
Hezekiah Manigo (Sr.)
n Falcons return experience at
the linebacker positions. The group
will be asked to make more plays
this season. Montgomery feels this
unit is more physical and will need

to use its speed to its advantage.

On defense, we will need to
fly to the ball more this season,
Montgomery said. Hopefully, we
can make some more big plays. We
were good at forcing turnovers a
year ago and will need to keep that
up.
SECONDARY
Devin King (Soph.), Kiren Sharp
(Sr.), Tyron Smith (Sr.),
Derrick Beckom (Jr.)
King and Sharp
will play cornerback,
while Smith and Beckom will play safety.
The Falcons were
vulnerable to the big
play a year ago and
will look to change
that this season.
Beckom
We have lot of
experience in the
secondary, Montgomery said.
This group has taken the lead in
practice and played well.
SPECIALISTS
Chris Taylor (Soph.)
n Taylor will handle place-kicking
and punting duties. The Falcons
have played well in special teams

a rarity in high school football.
Caledonia, fresh off a
playoff appearance in 2014,
its first since 2005, will
need Unruh to emerge as a
bigger leader if the Confederates hope to return to the
postseason.
Brandon Henry, who had
more than 1,800 yards rushing and scored 28 touchdowns last season, graduated. Unruhs top two targets,

After 26-player senior class helped New Hope return to playoffs, next group of seniors wants to keep things going
By Adam Minichino

Trey Samuel and Curtis C.J.

Clay dont want to be forgotten.
A year ago, 26 seniors played a
large role in helping Kris Pickle
have a successful debut as New
Hope High School football coach.
Some of the seniors were untested and faced the pressure of
having to produce for the first
time, but many of them responded
and helped the Trojans win their
first seven games and get back
to the Mississippi High School
Activities Association Class 5A
playoffs. A second-round loss to
Pearl ended New Hopes season
at 10-3. It marked the first time
since 2009 that the Trojans had

reached double figure victories.

Samuel
and
Clay want to do
their part to build
on that accomplishment and not
be the class that Samuel
goes out allowing
the Trojans to slip
back out of the postseason.
To realize that goal, Samuel,
Clay, and their 16 classmates
will be like their predecessors in
some ways in that they will be expected to be leaders and to play
key roles for the first time in their
careers.
If that sounds like a daunting
task, it doesnt faze Samuel and

Clay. They say

their turn.
(Last season)
inspired me to go
as hard as I can
this year so I can
get to that point or
Clay
beyond, said Samuel, a 215-pound
defensive tackle/right tackle. It
was fun.
Samuel has been a member of
the varsity team for the past four
years, so he has seen hope turn
into turmoil. A change in coaches after the 2013 season brought
more questions and had some in
the community wondering which
direction the football program

was going to go. But Pickles positive message helped everyone

believe. The success the Trojans
had early in the season cemented
the players confidence that even
though the team lacked Division
I standouts, it was capable of playing with the states top teams.
Samuel said the coaches
pushed the players last season
and helped forge a family atmosphere that made it easier for
everyone to come together and
forget the disappointments of the
past.
I was surprised (we had that
much success so quickly), but
then again we did the hard work
in the summer, so I was like we

will be a base five-man front and four-man

Weve always had speed, Stanley said.
But weve made an effort to become a stronger team. Before there wasnt the same
commitment to hard work we have now.
The Panthers will run a new triple-option
offense this season after losing quarterback
Daniel Davis, who had more than 20 touchdowns last season. Panthers coach Anthony
King said the team will lean on players like
Woodson and Porter to create lanes for the
Panthers stable of backs.
When you think of Georgia Tech, thats
what well look like, King said. That experience on our line will help that transition go

Woodson said the team has benefited
from more competitive practices.
People are aggressive and fighting

Samuel said. If God says
so, we are going to be able
to do it.
Samuel wants to tap
into that sentiment this
season because it isnt often a team loses 26 seniors
and is able to reload for
another postseason run.
He smiles when asked
about the expectations
for this season because
he said he has heard
people saying New Hope
isnt going to be good this
year because they lost so
many players. That talk
has served as motivation
for seniors who want to go
out with a bang and dont
want to be forgotten.
We are going to go as
hard as we can, we are going to go farther than last
season, and we are going
to do our thing for New
Hope High School, Samuel said.
Clay,
who
rushed
for 190 yards and eight
touchdowns last season,
agrees. He said the seniors are ready because
this is their last chance.
He said it feels like he has
been waiting for this year
for a long time and that it
is serving as motivation to
have a senior season that
will be remembered.
We are just a big target because of what we
did last year, Clay said.
We are just working to
prove ourselves. I dont
know if people are counting us out, but it is up to us
to show them.
The size of Clays role
is uncertain given the
status of senior running

Were not going to be
as explosive as last year,
Hamm said. And yes, its
somewhat of a rebuilding year. But that doesnt
mean we cant control the
game. Well rely more on
the game than in the last
few years.
Hamm said theres just

This year, well go

Hamm said. Leadership

thing I enjoy about having

a team thats underrated theres something

about taking a team that
isnt expected to do a lot

would rather have what
we had last year, but if we

take this group and are

be rewarding and something to build on.
Honnoll, known as the

the young players are hungry and are spirited. He

we have young guys stepping up, Fulgham said.

Patriots hope to unleash hybrids

Donahoe will try to use Heritage Academys depth, athleticism at tight end to create versatile, explosive attack Coaching staff
By Adam Minichino
aminichino@cdispatch.com

Stubborn coaches dont

have long lives.
Barrett Donahoe never
wants to be mistaken for
someone who doesnt like
change, which is why the
Heritage Academy football
coach analyzed the roster
he expected to have for the
2015 seasons and came to a
conclusion.
The decision Donahoe
made
involved one
position
tight
end
and a lot
of players.
While some
teams
esDonahoe

a tight end
and opt for
more spread
formations,
Donahoe
scanned his
roster and
saw so many
athletes
Barker
of
similar
abilities that another word
popped into his head: hybrid.
Composed of mixed
parts, the Heritage Academy
offense this season will have
tight ends playing receiver,
receivers playing running
back, running backs playing
receivers in a mix that Donahoe hopes causes defenders
heads to spin.
We feel like we have
depth at the positions were
trying to emphasize on offense, Donahoe said. The
worst thing you can do is to
be so stubborn in your formation alignments that you
run out of depth at the positions youre emphasizing
and utilizing.
Donahoe said Dylan
Barker, Lukas Bryant, Cason Westmoreland, William
Yingst, Tyler Swedenburg,
Toby Young, and John Isaac
Stafford are all getting repetitions at tight end, and
have good bodies and good
hands, and are physical kids.
Combine those options
with junior quarterback
Tyler Anderson, senior
running back Michael Ledbetter, junior running back
Dylan Hughes, and sophomore running back Dontae
Gray and the Patriots have
enough options to make
several hybrids.
We are trying to use a lot
of guys, Donahoe said. We
feel like we have a lot of tight
end-H back type of bodies,
so we are trying to develop
an offense around it that will
give us a chance to get a lot
of guys reps and on the field.
We are going to try to create
some formations and get
numbers through formations
that you havent see us in a lot
over the years. We are going
to rely on tight ends to be a
big part of our offense.

Heritage Academys Dylan Barker tries to break a tackle against Starkville Academy last season. A year after
splitting time at quarterback with Tyler Anderson, Barker likely will be one of six or seven players in the mix at a
hybrid tight end position the Patriots hope to exploit this season.

Dispatch File Photo

Heritage Academys decision to use a hybrid tight end position could mean bigger
gains for someone like senior running back Michael Ledbetter.

tage Academy teams have

run multiple formations
(pro sets, wing sets, spread
sets), but he said the team
never has relied on tight
ends to be the base of the
scheme. He said the quality
depth on this years team
has forced a change of thinking. He hopes to develop the
strengths of all of the players
in multiple roles to keep defenses off balance.
Barker, a senior who
split time with Anderson
at quarterback last season,
could be one of the fixtures
at the tight end/hybrid
position. At 6-foot-1, 210
pounds, Barker possesses
the size to be a matchup
problem. After adjusting to
the new thinking in the offseason and in the preseason, Barker said he and his
teammates like the H-back
concept.

I like it because I think

(hybrid) goes with athlete, Barker said. I think
we have a lot of hybrid guys
on this team. Everybody
can play a lot of positions
because everybody is pretty athletic. I think thats
where were going to be
successful, putting different guys in different spots
and really switching it up.
Barker said Heritage
Academy has gone to more
two tight ends sets in part
because he said there are
six or seven people who
could be successful at that
position. He said the 2015
team has more hybrid guys
than last season, when the
Patriots opted to use certain
players in certain situations.
Ledbetter, a senior, said
the Patriots have more players who be explosiveness at
every position this season

compared to last season.

I think we can be stronger than we were last year,
Ledbetter said. The hybrid word you used is in a
lot of our players. A lot of
our players can be fresh
and go in at every position
basically. We have a receiver who can go in at tailback
and a tight end who can go
in at receiver. We have linemen who go hard and do
work, so that is going to be
really good for us.
The chance to work with
so many weapons excites
Anderson, who is expected
to get a majority of the playing time at quarterback.
Anderson said he feels
more comfortable trusting his offensive line and
that he hopes he can avoid
having happy feet, which
happens when a quarterback leaves the pocket
The Dispatch

when he feels pressure. Anderson feels he is doing a

better job making his reads
and going through his progressions, which should
help the Patriots with more
options on the field.
I think we have a variety of players, Anderson
said. Last year, we went
straight spread and had
certain running backs, certain wide receivers. This
year, we have guys who can
play tight end, can play a
little running back, receivers who can come in at running back. Were going to
have more depth.
With so much depth at
skill positions, senior offensive lineman Thomas Cooper said that means more
responsibility on the guys up
front to do their jobs. He said
the offensive linemen are
quicker and are doing a better job getting to second-level locks this season. That
bodes well for all of the Patriots hybrids, who will welcome as much open space as
they can get to make plays.
Were expected to do
more with our blocks, Cooper said. Were working
up to linebackers instead
of maybe just comboing to
our defensive tackle. Were
working up to make the big
plays that we didnt make
last year.
I think we will be good.
We are all pretty close.
We all have been playing
together for a while, and
I think we all know the offense pretty well.

Being a starter, its a
huge step for our team,
Montgomery said. We
need to pick it up. Im just
glad I can be that person to
carry on the legacy of being a starter at Starkville.
Montgomery played in
nine games last season in
a backup role, and was 7 of
18 for 57 yards.
Although there are
some big shoes for Montgomery fill, his teammates
dont want him to be Myles, Jones, or Davis, who
threw for 3,412 yards and
42 touchdowns. They want
him to play within himself.

qualify for the playoffs. Jacob Sellers (not pictured) is the teams other senior.

Dawkins hopes stubbornness pays off for Vikings

Central Academy graduate (Class of 1991) joins Ricks, Newman in working as volunteers to lead football program
MACON Michael
Dawkins admits he is hard
headed.
Like many married men
know, that quality can get
you into trouble pretty
quickly.
In the case of the Central Academy
football team,
though,
Dawkins
st ubbor n ness
has
t u r n e d
M. Dawkins out to be a
great thing.
Thats because Dawkins, a 1991
graduate
of Central
A c a d e m y,
and classB. Ricks
mate Bryan
Ricks
agreed earlier this summer
to be volunteer head coaches for their alma maters
football program.
Joined by former Central Academy player Cole
Newman, a 2012 graduate,
the new coaches hope to
bring stability to a program
that has had three different
coaches in the past three
seasons.
The change doesnt
bother Dawkins or Ricks,
who worked as coaches last
season under head coach
William Walker.
People are going to
know, hopefully, that we
have been on the field
with them, Dawkins said.
Were going to like to hit.
Were working on strength
in the mornings and agility.
Were going to have to be

Shaw

in shape because were going to have to play on both

sides of the ball. We have a
great group of young men.
They listen, they cut up,
and they are hard heads,
which is exactly what I like.
It is exactly what the other
two (coaches) like, too.
It is easy when you
have a good group to work
with, and it is easy on that
aspect from the kids side
of it. What is hard is that I
dont mess up for them.
Dawkins, who played
football with Ricks at the
school, works in the Information
Technology
department at the Mississippi State veterinary
school. He has coached
high school basketball at
Central Academy for the
past three or four years,
and he has helped with the
schools baseball program.
Last season, Dawkins ran
the defense for the schools
football team. He said he
has been involved with the
school in some capacity
since 1978.
Times have changed
since then, when one of
Central Academys biggest
rivals was Heritage Academy, another Mississippi
Association of Independent
Schools member that plays
in Class AAA. Central
Academys enrollment has
decreased in recent years,
which has led the school
to play eight-man football
since 2008.
Central Academy has
had success in that stretch.
It was the state runner-up
in 2010 and won eight
games and advanced to
the playoffs in 2011. Last
season, Central Academy
won its first six games by
an average of 30 points.

P. Dawkins

Running back Leshon Hill

had back-to-back 200-yard
rushing efforts, including a three-touchdown
performance against The
Veritas School that earned
him The Dispatchs Prep
Player of the Week honor.
But Central Academy lost
its last two games of the
season, district matchups
to Hebron Christian and
Kemper Academy, to finish
6-3. The six wins was the
teams most since 2011.
Even though the team
suffered losses at key skill
positions, including Hill,
Dalton Outz, and Colby
Robbins, Dawkins believes
the team has potential because of its athleticism.
With 11 players on the
roster, he hopes a senior
class of Wyatt Norris,
Trent House, Jacob Sellers,
Dylan Manning, and Nelson Robbins will lead the
way. All five of the seniors
played last season.
I know it is going to be
a challenge, but these kids
are athletic, Dawkins said.
They are athletes. If we
get the mental part with
them, and the lack of experience at the position is going to be our hardest thing,
but they are going to do it.
We have a great parent
base that is behind them
and behind us. Hopefully
they wont cut my pay.

Continued from Page 11

After the game, they are
asking about him, and they
tell me they like that kid,
Watkins said. The reason
is he is going to give everything he has got.
Watkins believes Shaw
would have every college
in the nation knocking on
his door if he was 6-2, 200
pounds. He said Shaw has
the ability to play at the
next level if he grows a little
in the next year. Knowing
Shaw like he does, though,
Watkins is confident his
junior quarterback doesnt
worry about things like that.
Instead, Watkins said
Shaw has focused on being
a silent leader in offseason
and preseason workouts.
He said Shaw has taken
responsibility to motivate
and to encourage his teammates, which he feels will
be important because the
Rams suffered key losses.
This season, Watkins
anticipates moving Shaw to

different positions to capitalize on his speed. At 5-5,

Shaw sometimes has problems finding a clear sight
line. That could be an issue
this season considering the
Rams will average nearly
6-3 across their offensive
line. As a counter, Watkins
said Columbus Christian
will love Shaw out of the
pocket to help his vision
down field. It also makes
him a threat to run the ball.
He is so versatile,
Watkins said. He played
running back when he was
in the eighth grade, quarterback in junior high when he
was in the ninth grade, and
running back some at the
high school as a freshman.
He also was quarterbacking
the JV team.
Looking back at last season, Shaw feels his vision
in the pocket improved and
that he learned how to be
more patient waiting for
plays to develop. This sea-

son, Shaw said he wont feel

more pressure on his shoulders to do more to extend
the Rams string of playoff
appearances to three. He
said that attitude is similar
to the one he has followed
all his life. Shaw said he isnt
going to worry about things
he cant control and that he
is going to work as hard as
possible so people remember him for a lot more than
a 5-5, 135-pound quarterback.
We have to keep encouraging each other,
Shaw said. I know when
guys encouraged me when
I was coming up that meant
a lot to me. I know that if I
encourage them and make
them want to work harder
and seeing them work
harder makes me want to
work harder were kind
of doing it together and it is
a team effort.
I give it everything I
got.

D. Ricks

on the schools fast-pitch

softball team; William and
Preston), so he is very involved with the school.
He believes someone else
would have stepped up to
be head coach this season,
but he said he was willing
to do it as a volunteer.
The seniors, I have been
coaching them or against
them since they were 7 or
8 years old, Dawkins said.
To me, the 11 kids are
mine, too, and it is easy from
that standpoint giving up my
time. I will have plenty of
time to relax later. Right now
I dont need to.
Dawkins sons will play
a variety of roles. He said
William will play linebacker, fullback, and defensive
end, while Preston will
play wide receiver and defensive back. He said it is a
huge motivation to have his
sons on the team, and that
he still would have coached
even if he didnt have sons
on the team.
Manning said the players appreciate and need
coaches like Dawkins,
Ricks, and Newman to
work with them. He said
the coaches are similar in
that Dawkins and Ricks are
old school. He said they
can relate more to Newman because they pretty
much grew up with him.
We need some people
like that with an open heart
so we can come out here
and play, Manning said.

Manning laughed when

he said Ricks and Dawkins
have the same coaching
philosophy. Nelson Robbins said there have been
times when the coaches
have regaled the players
with tales of their football
exploits. Robbins shook his
head at one of the stories
Ricks told about how quick
he was when he played
at Central Academy, but
both players said all of the
players have confidence
in what their coaches will
help them accomplish.
Theyre going to get us
there, Manning said. We
have been around them our
whole lives. We trust them,
and we know they are going to get us there.
Robbins said the players have worked hard to
improve on last season. He
said everyone has bulked
up, which should serve as
a great complement to the
speed he feels the Vikings
will have. He said getting in
shape for the long haul of a
season has been the priority in the preseason.
Manning agrees the
journey will be tough considering the teams lack of
depth, but he feels the overall speed will be a strength
the Vikings can use to bolster the confidence they
gained last season.
Coach Dawkins hopes
to tap into that confidence
and see even bigger results

high school football preview

noxubee county tigers

Mississippi High School Activities Association: Class 4A, Region 4; 2014 Record: 14-2 (5-0)

Tigers will use focus to show they are still hungry

Shorter believes reigning Class 4A champions are motivated to become schools first to win back-to-back titles

in front of them. Even

though Noxubee County
has won 10 or more games
11 times in the past 14
years, no team has won
back-to-back championships. With leaders like
seniors Timorrius Conner
(quarterback), Shunessey
Sherrod (running back),
Jeffery Simmons (defensive lineman), and Ladaveon Smith and Deveon
Ball (wide receiver / de-

fensive back), the Tigers

have enough players who
will listen to Shorter and
the coaches and do what
they have to do to accomplish something that has
never been done in the
programs history.
We are trying to make
history, Smith said. That
is motivating us a lot because we are the defending champs and we are
trying to stay the champs.
The 6-foot, 184-pound
Smith is entering his
fourth year as a member
of the varsity team. He has
played running back, fullback, wide receiver, and
defensive back in his career. This season, he will
be counted on to solidify a
secondary that is one area
that could cause concern
for Shorter. After losing
two standout cornerbacks
to graduation, Shorter
knows defensive back and
linebacker, where the Tigers will have to find replacements on the outside,
will be points of emphasis
early in the year as new
starters adjust to their
roles.I think everybody is
on the same page, Shorter
said. I think everybody is
talking about doing something that has never been
done here at Noxubee
County. That is to repeat. I
think this year is our best
chance because we have
so many returning.
Off previous championship years, we lost a
bunch of seniors. Having
over half of your offense
returning, especially in
the key positions, it gives
you a sense that this might
be the year you can repeat.
At every other position, Noxubee County has
experience and depth.
Teams that return that
many weapons sometimes
have a problem with complacency. After all, so
much hard work goes into
winning a championship
See tigers, 21

who led the team with 183

tackles last season, matured into a strong middle
linebacker. He said Barnett
has received a scholarship
offer from Jackson State.
Shorter said the Tigers will
have to replace their two
outside linebackers that
were lost to graduation. He
said Little and Robinson are
adjusting to the speed of
the game.
Barnett made a ton of
plays last year, Shorter
said. We expect him to
have a great year.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
Ladaveon Smith (Sr.),
Deveon Ball (Sr.),
Joshua Little (Jr.),
Kyziah Pruitt (Fr.)
n The Tigers also will
have to replace two cornerbacks lost to graduation.
He feels the replacements
are coming along and that
the coaches will have to

work with the newcomers

to ensure they are ready to
play key roles.
SPECIALISTS
Kymbotric Mason (Sr.),
Jeffery Simmons (Sr.),
Javarcus Walker (Jr.),
Andrew Henley (Soph.)
n The Tigers will have to
replace the loss of Zachary
Kauffman to graduation.
Kauffman handled the
kicking chores for the past
four years. Mason will
punt and likely will handle
kickoffs. Walker could be
the PAT kicker. Simmons
and Henley will be the long
snappers.
We are not good kicking
the ball for field goals right
now, Shorter said. We
dont have a team on the
team that can kick as well
as I want them to. We
probably will go for two a lot
this year.

Some
coaches can convey a
point without raising their
voice.
In his time as defensive coordinator and head
football coach at Noxubee
County High School, Tyrone Shorter has learned
how to get the most out
of his players. He can use
a normal tone to carry on
a conversation with one
of his Tigers in his office
while the other players
are attacking the weight
room just outside the door.
Shorter also can get in a
players face on the field
and use a louder voice if he
sees something he doesnt
like.
Either way, Shorter
knows how to accentuate
the positives to ensure
Noxubee County is on the
right track.
A year ago, Shorters
emphasis on one vowel in
one word Hungry
epitomized his message
for the season.
Whether it was before
Noxubee County High or after a season-opening
School senior defensive 51-19 loss to Starkville,
back Ladaveon Smith Shorter brought out the
word fittingly capitalized to assure maximum
emphasis and then lingered for a second or two
on the u in the word to
make sure anyone listening understood the Tigers
werent going to be easily knocked off their path
to the Mississippi High

travel a similar path this

season. The only difference is Shorter has a new
word for the journey that
he will use to keep his
charges in line.
These kids are focused, Shorter said.
We had a great spring
and a great summer. I am
pleased with where we
are now. The heat isnt
bothering the kids. I think
the heat is bothering the

coaches more than it is

bothering the kids.
Despite key losses at
linebacker and in the secondary, Shorter believes
Noxubee County, which
finished 14-2 last season
and on an 11-game winning streak, is primed for
a march to Oxford, this
years site of the state title
games, because his players appreciate the significance of the challenge

a closer look
QUARTERBACKS
Timorrius Conner (Sr.)
n Noxubee County High
coach Tyrone Shorter cant
say enough about the maturation of Conner. As a sophomore, Conner played in
eight games and threw for
809 yards. He completed
40 percent of his passes
and had four touchdowns
and 12 interceptions. Last
season, Conner blossomed
into someone who could
lead the offense, throwing
for 3,009 yards, completing
57.6 percent of his passes,
and throwing 35 touchdowns (nine interceptions).
This season, Shorter feels
the Tigers will be able to
open the playbook even
more to showcase Conner
and a variety of weapons.
This summer, he really
just took over the offense,
Shorter said. During seven-on-seven, he was calling
his own plays the whole
summer. To watch him over
the years, he has grasped
the whole offense and can
do so much.
We are really going to
open the playbook up this
year because he is ready
for it. He can see things
and see the field. I just wish
this kid was about 6-foot1 or 6-2. I guarantee you
everybody would want this
kid. They are going off his
height, but he has one of
the strongest arms in the
state. He is very athletic.
RUNNING BACKS
Shunessey Sherrod (Sr.),
TyQuinton Ramsey (Jr.),
Jakerrius Oliver (Jr.),
Javarcus Walker (Jr.),
Ladaveon Smith (Sr.)
n Shorter said Sherrod,
who rushed for 1,136 yards
and 15 touchdowns last
season, likely will be at less
than 100 percent starting
the season. He said the
Tigers will try to get Sherrod
healthy and will count on a
deep backfield that is filled
with hungry players with a
lot of potential. Shorter said
Ramsey had a great spring
and is showing a lot of potential. He admitted it could
be hard to find touches for

all of the players.

(Sherrod) is going to
go as long as he can go,
Shorter said. We have so
many other running backs
who can really fill that void
if he cant go, but we hope
he can go. We are going to
need him. I hope he is able
to go.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Javarcus Walker (Jr.),
Deveon Ball (Sr.),
Kymbotric Mason (Sr.),
Ladaveon Smith (Sr.),
Rashad Eades (Soph.),
Jeffery Simmons (Sr.)
n Another position
packed with potential, experience, and depth. Shorter
said Walker will see playing
time at several positions,
while Ball, who also will
start in the secondary, will
be one of the top threats.
Shorter said Eades has the
potential to be one of the
best receivers to come
through Noxubee County
High. He said Simmons
also will see time at tight
end and running back.
Our receiving corp is
deep, Shorter said.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Bobby May (Sr.),
Tyler Dooley (Jr.),
Laterience Dora (Sr.),
Justin Davis (Soph.),
Antonio Roby (Jr.)
n The Tigers return three
starters, led by May, who
Shorter said, has a motor
like a defensive lineman.
He never stops. Shorter
said the new starters up
front played a lot last season, which should aid their
transition to the lineup. The
Tigers also will have one of
their biggest line in terms
of size. Davis and Roby are
two of the biggest on the
line at 285 pounds and
heavier.
We are excited about
our offensive line, Shorter
said. They can get after it.
I think we are better on the
offensive line this year than
we were last year.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Jeffery Simmons (Sr.),
Myles Smith (Soph.),
Quincy Stokes (Sr.),
Jamarrius Bradford (Jr.)

n The Tigers have one of

the best linemen in Mississippi. A member of The Clarion-Ledgers Dandy Dozen,
which recognizes the 12
best players in the state,
Simmons had 15 sacks
last season and was second on the team with 107
tackles (14 for loss).
Smith started in the state
title game as a freshman
last season. Shorter said
this position is the strength
of the defense.
What else can you say
about (Simmons)? Shorter
said. We can play him in
so many different positions,
and that is what were going
to have to do because we
already know people are going to run away from him.
LINEBACKERS
Qendarrion Barnett (Sr.),
Eddison Little (Jr.),
Kalmorris Robinson (Jr.)

Eagles hope experience stays healthy, paves way

Deep senior class has veteran coach Foster optimistic about teams chances to compete for Eight-Man title
By Adam Minichino
aminichino@cdispatch.com

PHEBA When youre

an acknowledged oldschool guy, its hard to
make someone appreciate
your optimism about a new
season.
But David Foster has
been coaching long enough
to know that what is listed
on paper doesnt win any
games. Still, the Hebron
Christian football coach
cant help but talk with anticipation about what he
feels his squad could accomplish this season.
We have a lot of seniors
and I am expecting big
things, Foster said. You
got to go play the game, but
looking at us on paper we
look pretty good. We have
to go out there and do what
were capable of doing.
Fosters comment is the
equivalent to a halfback option pass out after a reverse
out of a spread formation for
a coach who never has been
shy to admit he prefers a 3
yards and a cloud of dust
approach on offense. Over
the years, though, Foster
has embraced change
thanks in part to the play of
veteran quarterback Channing Tapley and incorporated more passing into his
offensive scheme.
Just because it is eightman doesnt mean you

17

Mark Wilson/Dispatch Staff

Hebron Christian quarterback Channing Tapley is one of many multi-sport standouts

entering his final season this year.

cant do that (3 yards and a

cloud of dust), Foster said.
Eight-man has historically
been a flashy game with a
lot of passing and a lot of
touchdowns, but you can
score a lot of touchdowns
running the ball. If you can
control the tempo, you can
keep the ball.
This season, Hebron
Christian could rely on a
10-player senior class and
unveil its most wide-open
offense in recent memory.
With Tapley returning as

QUARTERBACKS
Tyler Anderson (Jr.),
Dylan Barker (Sr.)
n Heritage Academy rotated
Anderson and Barker at the position last season. Coach Barrett
Donahoe feels the Patriots will
have more of a settled situation
with Anderson, but he said Barker
will be on the field as much as
possible, either in a tight end/Hback position or at quarterback.
I think he is getting a lot
more comfortable back there,
Donahoe said of Anderson. He
has gotten bigger and taller, so he
can see better. All of those things
come with age.
We have to utilize his speed
outside and his ability to get
out there and use his feet when
necessary.
RUNNING BACKS
Michael Ledbetter (Sr.),
Dontae Gray (Soph.),
Dylan Hughes (Jr.)
n Donahoe likes the speed
and play-making ability of all
three. He said he hopes the
Patriots can get as many of them
on the field at the same time because they all showed flashes in
the offseason and in the preseason of being pretty good.
We felt like he was there last
year, Donahoe said when asked
if he believed Ledbetter was going
to take on the responsibility of
being a go-to back. He had a
really good season. I know he got
banged up right there at the end
of the season and missed a couple of games, but he is a corner-

the teams starting quarterback, Foster said the

Eagles will try to exploit
matchups and showcase
the athleticism of players
like seniors Payton Griffin,
Brian Eaddy, Lucas Foster,
a 240-pound running back,
and Landon Hill. Foster
said he worked Griffin in at
quarterback early in training camp when Tapley was
not with the team and playing travel baseball.
Foster said the offense
has the potential to be more

explosive than last season.

He said he always has had
a wide array of plays, but he
said the fact that so many
players are seniors gives
the offense the potential to
be even more dangerous.
Coach Foster also plans
to call Tapleys number.
In addition to having a
strong arm, the 6-foot-2,
215-pound Tapley, who also
is a pitcher on the schools
baseball team, is a strong
runner. This will be Tapleys third season as start-

ing quarterback.
He always has been a
weight-room junkie, Foster
said. He always has been
a bulky kid. He has lost a
little bit of weight and has
slimmed up. He is moving a
little better and his feet look
better. He always has been
pretty accurate, but a lot of
time his trouble was on his
short passes and his touch.
I think his accuracy is
even better than it was last
year, but the touch on the
football is not breaking peoples fingers.
Seniors Emerson Shinn,
Josiah
Parrish,
Jessie
Moore, Daniel Coggins,
and Nolan Whitt will provide depth on the offensive
and defensive lines.
But Foster also has been
quick to tell his players they
cant be overconfident because the Eagles have so
many experienced players.
We really havent talked about this being the last
chance, Foster said. What
I told them during summer
workouts and I had some
that didnt show up very
regularly because it wasnt
mandatory was you have
some really great opportunities in front of you that you
can grab, but you have to
work to go get them. They
are not given to you.
We just have to jell,
learn what we have got to
do, and go play.

stone of what were going to try to

be the focused leader in the backfield for our guys because he has
been there and understands it.
He is getting to the point
where the questions that he has
had in the past about assignments and scheme are really
minimal, if at all. From that standpoint, hopefully that will create
an atmosphere for him that he
can play fast, and he is a fast kid
anyway. If he is confident in the

n Including tight end, this
might be the Patriots deepest position. The teams roster lists 15
players at wide receiver or tight
end, which means there will be
plenty of competition and should
be enough depth to give players
rests. That should help the team
in other areas, particularly on
defense.

I really feel like Barker can be

highly successful at that position, Donahoe said. We went
through a season last year when
we rotated quarterbacks. For us
to be successful, I feel like those
two guys (Anderson and Barker)
have to be on the field at the
same time. Dylan has been with
us for four years. Tyler is very athletic at the quarterback position
and has really grown into being an
outstanding athlete. Getting them
on the field at the same time for
our offense is important to utilize
their strengths. With Barker being
so willing to make that transition
and move and do that has been
great for us.

it can create frustration for the

for them, Donahoe said. Some
of the sophomores who got so
much experience for us last year
Dalton Hocutt, Logan Sneed,
Brandon Jones, Jack Hannon,
Chase Brooks we look at it now
and we are so far ahead up front
of where we were last year at
this time. We are so far ahead of
understanding what our roles are
and understanding the offensive

run scheme and pass protection.

From that standpoint, we feel
good about it. We have to stay
healthy up front. Were limited

our size are, so we have to stay
healthy and keep these guys rotating on defense.

As Spanns goal is to

his staff will have to find
replacements for seven
starters who accounted
for the majority of the production on offense and five
starters on defense.

quarterback Josh Williams, wide receivers
Parish Cratic and Tyreke Gates, and offensive
linemen Jordan Gladney,
Jamarcus Tallie, Devante
Smith, and Jimize Walker.
Williams finished his
brilliant four-year high
school career by throwing for 2,492 yards and
completing 148 of 237
passes for a .624 passing
percentage and 21 touchdowns. He also rushed
for 891 yards on 165 carries with 13 touchdowns,
as he accounted for 3,383

his rushing totals were the

Gates and Craddick finished second and fourth

Gates with 458 yards on

353 yards on 22 catches
for a per-catch average of
16.0 and four touchdowns.
Gates yardage total
was fourth best in the
region, while Cratics
ranked sixth.
On the ground, Aberdeen racked up 2,485
yards to average 177.5
yards per game and 5.2
yards per carry. Gladney,
Tallie, Smith, and Walker
paved the way as the Bulldogs scored 492 points
(35.1 points per game).
We lost an exceptional quarterback, two very
good receivers, and four
outstanding
linemen,
said Spann, who was the

In addition, the Bulldogs will look for a new
place-kicker and punter
following the graduation
of kicker Demarea Dobbins and Williams, who
handled the punting.
Despite losing more
than half of his starters
from the 2014 squad,
Spann has a solid nucleus
from which to build another playoff contender,
led by quarterback Tramonte Prather, running
back Donte Carter, and
highly recruited wide receiver Jerrick Orr.
Theres no doubt Prather has big shoes to fill, but
he saw spot duty under
center as a junior in relief of Williams. His stats,
283 yards passing on a
22-for-50 effort and two
touchdowns, were good
enough to rank eighth in
the region.
Prather also had 15
catches as a wideout,
good for 318 yards and
a team-leading 21.2 percatch average, so he
should have no trouble
finding his receivers.
Prather will benefit
from a solid running back
in Carter, who led the
team with 973 yards rushing on 172 carries for a 5.7
yards per carry average
and a 69.5 yards per game
average, along with C.J.
Williams and Cameron
Blaylock.
Prathers biggest asset, however, will be Orr,
a University of Memphis
commit, who paced the
Bulldogs in receiving
with 907 yards (19.7 yards
per catch) and 11 touchdowns. He had a long reception of 86 yards.

B.J. Williams also

could be a top target for
Prather. He had 23 catches for 457 yards (19.9
yards) and a long of 82
yards.
The strength of our
offense will be our skill
people at quarterback and
receiver, Spann said.
Tramonte may be
listed as a first-year starter, but hes a senior who
has had some experience
when Josh (Williams) got
hurt or needed a breather. Hes a tough kid who
throws the ball well.
Our returning receivers Tae Carothers,
Dorian Fears, B.J. Williams, and Orr are playmakers. Theyre good in
space and love to stretch
the field.
My biggest concern is
the offensive line. We lost
four horses up front, and
only two of our projected
offensive line starters are
seniors. Well also be a lot
smaller, but on the plus
side well be quicker.
Defensively, Spann likes
his teams overall speed,
but hes concerned because
no less than eight offensive
starters including Prather and Orr, both key skill
players likely will get the
call when the opponent has
the ball.
Unlike on offense,
Prather has extensive experience on defense.
Tramonte is a solid defensive player who could
be signed as a safety without ever playing a down
there, Spann said.
Should Prather need
a rest, backup help will
come from senior Byron
Butler, a transfer from
Hamilton.
Byron started for
Hamilton last year, so his
experience will come in
handy, Spann said. But
theres a learning curve

in knowing our system,

as the game is a whole
lot faster than hes used
to coming from a 1A program.
Kickers and punters
havent been decided, but
Cameron Blaylock and
Bryant Butler, the sophomore brother of Byron
Butler, are in the mix for
both jobs.
One break Spann will
get this season is a schedule that doesnt include
reigning Class 4A state
champion Noxubee County (14-2), North Half finalist
Kemper County (11-4), division champion and longtime nemesis Louisville (95), and division foe Winona.
In their place, Aberdeen picks up 2A state
runner-up Calhoun City,
new to Class 3A Hatley,
former division opponent
Mooreville, and North
Pontotoc.
Aberdeens first five
non-division opponents
Corinth, New Hope,

The pressure to

has been eased
somewhat because
Baty was fortunate

Its good Im not stepping

A two-sport star

Baty was a twoWashington year baseball letterman at Itawamba Community College and at
Crighton College in Memphis,
Tenn. He graduated from Mississippi University for Women in
2009 with a degree in education
and was hired as the defensive
line coach at Amory that same
year.

Five years later, in January

of 2014, Baty went to work for
Weeks as his defensive coordinator and as an assistant baseball coach under Lewis Earnest.
Earlier this year, Baty succeeded
Weeks, who moved into administration as a principal in Nettleton.
Coach Weeks did a great
job here in his 11 years, and he
taught me the right way to run a

that it is natural to exhale and savor the accomplishment.
But Shorter said the Tigers arent having any of
that. Instead of basking in the glow of a second title
in three years, Shorter said players returned early
in 2015 to begin the long process of winning another championship. He enjoyed hearing the noise in
the weight room because he knew that meant more
than a handful of players were working hard to get
stronger. He liked what he saw in the spring as Conner honed his skills and his timing with his receivers. Shorter also has had plenty of reasons to smile
in the preseason because he senses his players
have heard him and have embraced the focus they
will need to complete a marathon in which they will
be the hunted.
All they talk about is winning another state
championship and repeating and doing something
that has never been done, Shorter said. We want
to make history, and we are working toward that.
The only thing that concerns Shorter is how the
players will manage their intensity because there
is a lot of competition for playing time. He said the
Tigers know there is no such thing as a starter in
the program, which motivates players in all classes
to compete for a starting job.
Still, keeping high school players focused for
four months is a challenge for everyone, maybe
even more at a program like Noxubee County
where it expects to win every game. But Shorter
said his players learned a valuable lesson last season after losing to Starkville in the season opener.
The Tigers had a lot of self-inflicted wounds in that
game that helped make the final margin a little
more lopsided, but Shorter used that loss throughout the season to keep his players sharp. Noxubee
County lost only one more game (to West Point) en

size to step in in relief.

SECONDARY
Daniel Washington (Sr.),

Kaminski Bankhead, all three of
whom are sophomores.
SPECIALISTS
Samuel Peloquin (Sr.)
n Peloquin will handle the
punting chores, while a foreign exchange student waiting on his birth
certificate who drilled a 52-yard
field goal in practice should handle
the placekicking.

route to its third state title, and its second in the past
three years.
These kids know they are going to have to play
each and every Friday night with our schedule,
Shorter said. I guess over the years they expect to
win and are bred that way. I dont think it will be
hard to keep their attention.
Ball, a 6-3 1/2, 195-pounder, also is in his fourth
year on the varsity team. Like Smith, he has played
wide receiver and defensive back. While the Tigers
will have to replace two starters on the offensive
line and one at wide receiver, Ball believes the Tigers have plenty of weapons and will have balance
between the run and the pass. He also agrees the
secondary needs to work harder to get better.
That being said, Ball, a free safety, wants everybody to understand that winning a title in 2014
didnt satiate the Tigers appetite.
The seniors from last year and before us have
helped us to get to where we are now, Ball said.
Coach Shorter and the coaches also have helped
us become better leaders and take on bigger roles.
It is kind of motivation and pressure. Like you
said, everybody keeps asking us about it and if we
still have that fire to go back and win another state
championship. It is motivation because we just
came off that state championship and we want to go
back to where we were.
It is like the hit list is on us because everybody is
trying to beat Noxubee County. They are going to
do their best to try to stop us from what we are trying to get to. We arent going to let anything stop us.
We are going to go ahead and be Noxubee County.
It sounds like the Tigers are primed to deliver
Shorters message.

defenses, said Riley, a senior. I feel if

we keep doing that we can go far and,
most likely, they cant stop it.
Everybody is an offensive threat. I
had a good year last year, but we have
a lot of other people who can do a lot
more than me. If we put all of that together, it cant be stopped.
Riley hopes the offense will help
the team accomplish more. Last season, Oak Hill Academy (5-6) lost to
Canton Academy in the first round of
the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AA playoffs.
We have something to prove, and
we are going to prove it, Riley said.
Brown, a sophomore, agrees and
feels the Raiders will have the ability
to switch it up every play and keep
defenses guessing. He said defenses
could kind of predict what the Raiders
were going to do in their offense last
season, and that they guessed a lot of
times. This season, Brown said if defenses guess, the Raiders will be right.
If defenses are right, he said the Raiders can make them wrong in a snap because of the numerous wrinkles they
will be able to run off their plays.
With multiple looks, Brown admits
he initially was confused, but he said
repetitions have helped him become
more comfortable with different options out of the same play.
Its just fun, said Brown, who
wants to be the power threat. Its
exciting. Its just a great opportunity

for the team to know that if somebody

needs a break from playing offense,
we have somebody who can go for
you and get you a play or two break.
We have so many people who can be
threats on offense.
Senior lineman Caleb Roberson
and Ford said the offense is even more
enjoyable because the Raiders have
bought in to it and see what it can
help the team do. Roberson said the
offense is going to be more up pace,
more downhill. He said everybody
has put in the work to learn he offense
and has stayed after practice to pick up
on formations. With eight returning
starters on offense, the extra time has
been important to make sure everyone understands all of the options.
Dill might be the most excited
Raider. He said he likes the offense because it gives him more control. He admits there are plenty of things he has
to read before the snap, but he said a
correct read can lead to a lot of yards or
a touchdown. He said he will continue
to work hard to get his timing down so
Oak Hill Academy can put up plenty of
crooked numbers on the scoreboard.
We know we are always going to
have the defense guessing, Dill said.
You always want that so they dont
know what youre doing. We are just
going to try to keep them on their toes
and see what we can do.

high school football preview

Hamilton
Continued from Page 21

head coach is senior running

back Keshon Heard, a four-year
starter and one of the states top
running backs.
Keshon has matured so
much in the past year, Baty said.
Hes at every practice, he wants
to work hard and he leads by example.
Baty said Heard relishes taking the younger skill players under his wing.
He takes the running backs
and the receivers and shows
them where to line up, where to
be, how to do things and how
to run routes, Baty said. Hes
a special-type player who only
comes along once in a while, like
a Don Smith (former Hamilton
and Mississippi State quarterback). Hes that type of a guy.
Heard, whose older brothers
Zarratt Sims and Quinshay Heard

were former Hamilton High football standouts, received his first

offer from Mississippi State earlier this spring. He also has drawn
interest from Alabama, Ole Miss,
Southern Mississippi and Memphis, along with virtually every
community college in the state.
Although he has been to several camps and is going to visit
various schools, Keshon is high
on Mississippi State, Baty said.
He wants to stay close to home
where his family can watch him
play.
According to reports, Heard
plans to announce his college
choice in the near future.
At 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Heard
also is a standout in track and
field. He won a state title in the
100 meters as a sophomore and
finished second as a freshman
and as a junior.

The only three-time participant to date in the fastest man

competition at Tupelos Southeast
Select Combine, Heard ended a
two-year runner-up streak with
a time of 4.34 seconds in the 40yard dash to claim the title this
past May.
Although Heard is being recruited as an athlete, Baty plans
to utilize his speed by lining him
up in the slot receiver position.
I believe in having your best
athlete on the edge, out in space
so to speak, Baty said, so most
of the time hell line up as a slot
receiver and well motion him
into the backfield into a traditional running back set. There arent
many defenders who have the
speed to cover that edge.
If Baty and Heard are to improve on Hamiltons 6-5 record
last season, replacements need to

a closer look AT WEST POINT

QUARTERBACKS
Marcus Murphy (Soph.),
Dmarrio Edwards (Jr.)
n West Point will play
a lot of two quarterbacks
this season. While both are
talented, the main concern
in this area is a lack of
experience.
Both of our quarterbacks have improved in
camp, West Point coach
Chris Chambless said. On
offense, we are getting
some players new looks
at new positions, so we
will have several different
looks from the quarterback
position.
RUNNING BACKS
Chris Calvert (Soph.),
Trevino Harris (Jr.),
Archie Jones (Soph.)
n Harris will make a big
impact in the backfield as
he moves from defense to
offense. The West Point
coaches have re-tooled the
offense to get more of the
team speed on that side of
the ball.
We are really pleased
with the progress of Trevino
since coming over from the
defensive side of the ball,
Chambless said. At West
Point, our backs are always
good when we have good
play from the line. We have
a good relationship working
there.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Dmarrio Edwards (Jr.),
Kaelan ONeal (Sr.)
n Edwards is a dynamic
playmaker and will add the
perfect complement to the
senior experience of ONeal.
As Murphy grows and develops, West Point looks to
pass more.
We really expect to see
a lot out of receivers this
year, Chambless said.
We have some many new
guys on that side of the ball
that its just a matter of
getting a comfort level with
everybody.

Enthusiasm

TIGHT ENDS
Thomas Williams (Sr.)
n West Point will use a
tight end in certain passing
sets. When the Green Wave
goes that route, Williams
brings experience and the
ability to make plays.
Thomas has really
improved with his pass
catching, Chambless said.
Even though we wont use
a lot of tight end, we expect
big things from him, Chambless said.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Scott Lashley (Sr.),
Colby Ponds (Jr.),
Jameek Price (Soph.),
Zameek Price (Soph.),
Devin Morton (Sr.),
Tamarcus Myers (Sr.)
n West Point returns
a lot of experience at this
group. This unit played well
in the second half of the
season, and with young
quarterbacks behind center,
their continued growth and
maturity is a necessity.
With Scott and Devin
leading the way, we are in
really good shape on the
offensive line, Chambless
said. We are counting on
some young players, too,
but we have some really
good leaders who will help
show the way.
DEFENSIVE LINE
William Ivy (Sr.),
Jamel Banks (Soph.),
Terrence Cherry (Soph.),
Tony Rush (Sr.), Everett
Cunningham (Jr.)
n Some spots will be
filled by newcomers. Some
of the experience returns
with Ivy at a tackle and Rush
at an end. A sometimes
undersized unit still has big
expectations for the season
based in large part to speed.
The most experience
returning is along the
defensive line, Chambless
said. That group played
well together last year, and
we expect that trend to
continue.

LINEBACKERS
Jaylon Ewing (Sr.),
Nick Melton (Sr.),
Keonta Hampton (Jr.),
Issac Davidson (Jr.)
The return of Melton,
who missed last season
with an anterior cruciate
ligament tear, provides a
huge lift. Ewing also adds
experience and will help
anchor a veteran group.
Nick gives this unit a
big lift, Chambless said.
He played well his sophomore season and then
missed last year due to
injury. He has come back
better than before and is
also providing some really
great leadership.
SECONDARY
Trey Brownlee (Soph.),
Jeffrey Drake (Sr.),
Randall Johnson (Sr.),
Tajh Johnson (Jr.)
n West Point looks to
make strides in this area.
The Green Wave will try to
eliminate some of the big
plays that hurt them in losses to Starkville and Oxford.
We have some new
guys in the secondary pushing for playing time, Chambless said. It is a solid
group. They are coming off
a very strong offseason.
SPECIALISTS
Jose Garcia (Jr.)
n West Point has been
strong in the kicking game.
Garcia looks to continue
that trend as he handles
the punting and place
kicking.
In punting, kicking and
kicking off, we will have a
good season, Chambless
said. Special teams have
always been vital, and we
have had good fortune with
that while I have been here.
We have to be a little better
on kick returns, but we will
get there.
Scott Walters

West Point

trol over, Baty said.

Batys two biggest concerns
entering the 2015 opener against
South Pontotoc are his offensive
line and seven of his potential
starters going both ways.
We have only one senior
starting on the offensive line,
Baty said. The rest are underclassmen one junior, two
sophomores and one freshman.
Now dont get me wrong, they all
work hard and are physically able
to handle their positions. Its just
that they are so young and most
have never started a high school
football game.
On the plus side, we have
enough skill position players
(all seniors) surrounding them
whose leadership is hopefully going to push those newcomers in
the right direction when its time
to play on Friday night.

in allowing 34 points in a loss to Starkville

and 42 and 43 points in losses to Oxford.
West Point led Oxford in the second
quarter or at halftime in both games.
Oxford has lost to Picayune and Laurel
in the Class 5A state title game the past
two years.
You always want to finish, Chambless said. Even if we lose all 11 starters,
we are expected to win. That is the expectation places on us by our community. Last year, we couldnt get it done.
This year, we have worked hard to create
depth because the injuries really got us
a year ago. Players will get hurt because
that is what happens in football.
We have had more players learn a
second position during this offseason. In
football, you have to find a way to overcome when things dont go your way.
The adversity really hurt us last year.
Hopefully, we will have a better plan for
that this season.
West Point senior defensive tackle
William Ivy said the teams togetherness
will be a key to success.
Everybody has been working really
hard because last season was a disappointment, Ivy said. We have a good
chance of winning, even though we are
going to be really young. We changed
the defense up a little bit, and you will
see some different things.
Chambless said the offense and defense have undergone some scheme
changes during the offseason. On offense, the Green Wave will look at sophomore Marcus Murphy and junior Dmarrio Edwards at quarterback. West Point
has talent, but it is young.
The offensive line will be really
important this year, Chambless said.
With Devin Morton and Scott Lashley,
we are in good hands up there. (Running
back) Trevino Harris has moved from
defense to offense, and that has given us
a big lift, too. We have made a few minor
tweaks to take advantage of our speed.
Drake also will get some touches on
offense, while returning to help anchor
the defense. Another big pickup for that
unit is the return of senior linebacker
Nick Melon, who missed last season
with an anterior cruciate ligament tear.
Nick has picked back up where he
left off, and that is a huge sign for us,
Chambless said. He was really going to
be a great player and then had to miss a

season. He has come back and worked

even harder to regain his form.
The West Point defense will look to
regain its form in general. Some say a minor change such as more attention to
detail could go a long way this season.
We have been getting stronger and
getting quicker, Drake said. I think
we are doing a better job of flying to the
ball and being more physical. We have
worked a lot harder in the weight room.
Everybody has been getting that one extra rep in because we know what kind of
year we want to have. People are saying
we arent going to make it, but we want to
show everybody on the field.
Chambless echoed that sentiment.
We had a great summer and a good
spring, Chambless said. We have a lot
of young kids. The new faces have worked
extremely hard. The older guys are leading them, and that makes a coach feel
good. We ended the spring on a good note,
and that has really carried over. We have
some guys in new spots, and we are trying
to get our key players on the field more.
We have a ways to go, but the goal is
to get better every day. In a lot of ways,
we got better every day last season. You
just have to learn from the disappointment and figure out how to let it make
you a better player.
Ivy feels like his defensive teammates
have done that.
People are taking us lightly, and we
are OK with that, Ivy said. We really
didnt do anything last year to get respect West Point usually deserves, so
now we have to go out and prove it and
take some of that back. The expectations
are high because we think we can win a
lot of games.
Oxford has virtually everybody back
from its Class 5A North State Class 5A
championship, including quarterback
Jack Abraham and D.K. Metcalf, who
are members of The Clarion-Ledgers
Dandy Dozen, which recognizes the
states top high school football players.
This season, Oxford and West Point will
be rivals again in Class 5A, Region 1.
We want the matchup with Oxford
again, Drake said. That has really turned
into a big rival. We have worked hard in the
offseason. We have something for Oxford
this year and the rest of our opponents.

said. There is positive reinforcement. The games

the fans want to see and
the games that are circled
all year, we were able to
win those games, and that
really made everybody excited. Even in losses, you
can take the positives.
We know beating
Jackson Academy a year
ago will have no impact on
this season. However, we
also know the kids have
experienced success in
big-game situations. They
know how to battle back
from adversity and how to
finish games.
Starkville
Academy
will look to three-year
starter Houston Clark at
quarterback. Chrestman
also will play quarterback. They will be joined
in the backfield by seniors
Drake Gordman, Grant
Wolfe, Dalton Dempsey,
and William Wolfe.
The Volunteers also
boast experience with at
receiver and on the offensive line.
We have a lot of offensive weapons and a lot
of defensive weapons,
Starkville Academy offensive/defensive
lineman
Seth Watson said. When
we play to our potential,
we can be destructive.
The offensive line has really gotten a lot better. We
have played together for a

come forward to step in for seven

starters lost on offense and four
on the defense.
Gone from the 2014 squad are
wide receivers Tanner Dement
and Austin Bishop, fullback Michael Roberts, offensive guards
Westley Fikes and Cole Williams,
and offensive tackle Reed Dyess.
In addition, quarterback Byron
Butler transferred to Aberdeen.
Defensively,
replacements
must be found for defensive ends
Williams and Dement, the teams
best defensive player, according
to Baty, Bishop at defensive back,
and Roberts at middle linebacker.
Like any Class 1A school, a
lack of depth is a constant problem, so Baty hopes his squad can
steer clear of the injury bug.
We had some bad luck with
injury problems last year, but
thats something we have no con-

while now.
Since this is the senior year for a lot of us,
we really want to go out
hardest and make this a
special season.
Nicholson likes the
closeness of his squad.
However, the Volunteers
will lack depth with only
24 players.
On offense, we have
some three-year starters, Nicholson said. We
have some really athletically skilled guys. That
is our strength. On both
side of the balls, we will
line up the same guys and
they have been to battle.
Our main weakness is in
numbers. We have lower
numbers than in the past.
However, we have some
solid kids in that group.
For every positive, there
is a negative. However,
the kids have put in a lot
of work since Christmas.
Its a close group. I really like these guys. I really like what the seniors
bring to the table.
Nicholson and defensive coordinator Brad
Butler will welcome veteran coaches Tony Stanford
and Bubba Davis to the
coaching staff.
Coach Stanford has
taken an offensive line
that was not really looked
at and made them good,
Starkville Academy ju-

nior offensive/defensive
lineman Torin Hamilton
said. All of these coaches have been around and
won championships. We
are just soaking up what
they are teaching every
day. Each day when we
come to practice, we learn
something new.
The recent success has
fostered a willingness to
learn.
When you have success, it is contagious,
Nicholson said. Seventy-five percent of this
team was part of the success we had last year.
They have been a part
of the program for many
years watching as it got
built up. Success carries
over from one year to the
next. That is what we are
building here.
For the seniors, winning the state championship has been a goal for
several years.
This group of players
has been together for a
long time, Hamilton said.
We won the championship together in junior
high. That is what got the
ball rolling. That is what
got us to this point. That
is what has gotten us to
want even more.

QUARTERBACKS
Houston Clark (Sr.), Colt Chrestman (Sr.),
Noah Methvin (Soph.)
n Clark returns as a three-year starter
at quarterback. Chrestman also will play
quarterback in certain formations.
Houston has really developed into quite
a leader, Starkville Academy coach Chase
Nicholson said. We also have some unique
things we can do when Colt plays quarterback.
RUNNING BACKS
Drew Jackson (Jr.), Drake Gordman (Sr.),
Grant Wolfe (Sr.), Dalton Dempsey (Jr.),
William Wolfe (Soph.), Hayden Henderson
(Sr.), Noah Heflin (Sr.), Noah Smith (Soph.)
n Gordman leads a talented, deep group.
We have some really talented playmakers in the backfield, Nicholson said. The
challenge now is depth so we can get more
players more touches.
WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
Pierce Fondren (Sr.), Parker Guest (Sr.),
Colin Diaz (Sr.), Hayes Henderson (Sr.),
Colt Chrestman (Sr.)
n The Volunteers will look for their
receivers to take the next step. Some
inexperience in the group will benefit from
working with the veteran Clark.
Our receivers have worked really hard
during the offseason, Nicholson said.
This group will be surprising. I expect
some big things from them.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Houston Massey (Sr.), Torin Hamilton (Jr.),
Walker Tranum (Fr.), John Foster (Sr.),
Carter Wood (Sr.), Douglas Kelly (Fr.),
Seth Watson (Sr.), Logan Stanley (Sr.)
n The offensive line has made the most
strides since last season. The line features
some veterans, but it will count on newcomers to step in and contribute.
This group will be the key to our offensive success this season, Nicholson said.
We have our skilled players back, but we
have some new guys looking to get more
time on the line. It will be exciting to watch
this team grow and develop.

DEFENSIVE LINE
Noah Methvin (Soph.), Torin Hamilton (Jr.),
Walker Tranum (Fr.), John Foster (Sr.),
Carter Wood (Sr.), Douglas Kelly (Fr.),
Seth Watson (Sr.), Logan Stanley (Sr.),
Sam Cox (Jr.)
n A year ago, the defensive line proved
one of the bright spots. With a mix of
veterans and newcomers, a difficult early
season schedule will challenge this unit to
grow quickly.
Some of our younger players have
made some really great strides on the
defensive line, Nicholson said. We expect
some big things out of this group.
LINEBACKERS
Drew Jackson (Jr.), Hayes Henderson (Sr.),
Noah Heflin (Sr.), Noah Smith (Soph.),
Houston Massey (Sr.)
n Massey and Heflin anchor a veteran
group of linebackers. This unit excelled in
forcing turnovers last season.
A lot of experience returns with our
linebackers, Nicholson said. This group is
physical and they really fly to the ball.
SECONDARY
Pierce Fondren (Sr.), Parker Guest (Sr.),
Colin Diaz (Sr.), Drake Gordman (Sr.),
Houston Clark (Sr.), Grant Wolfe (Sr.),
Dalton Dempsey (Jr.), Colt Chrestman
(Sr.), William Wolfe (Soph.),
Hayden Henderson (Sr.)
n The secondary is also senior-laden. The
Volunteers excelled on defense for a large
part of last season. This unit should allow
that level of play to continue this season.
Our secondary really grew up as a unit
last season, Nicholson said. It will be
exciting to watch them grow and develop.
SPECIALISTS
Sam Cox (Jr.)
n Cox turned some heads with his longrange field goal kicking last season. He
returns to handle all kicking chores.
Sam proved himself last year as one
of the most valuable kickers in the area,
Nicholson said. He is very consistent in all
areas of the kicking game.

a closer look AT STARKVILLE

Continued from Page 13

Mark Wilson/Dispatch Staff

Starkville High Schools Avery Brown

rushed for 358 yards and four
touchdowns as a junior last season.

n The Yellow Jackets might have the

best defensive line in the state of Mississippi. All three seniors have Division I
offers, and Jordan will get his shot at the
next level.
Our front is going to give everybody
problems, Starkville High defensive coordinator Brooks Oakley said. Weve got
four guys that have got a lot of experience
coming back.
Linebackers
Abdural Lee (Jr.), Jeremy Skinner (Sr.),
Jacob Williams (Soph.), Willie Gay (Jr.),
Tyler Moore (Sr.)
n Gay leads a talented linebacker group
for the Jackets. Moore has seen limited
action, but will be one of the starters this
season for Oakley.
I think theyre good, Oakley said.
Their job, I wouldnt say is easy, but its
easier with those three guys (Abdural Lee,
Jeremy Skinner, and Jacob Williams) up
front.
Secondary
Jaquez Wilson (Jr.), Terrence Grayer
(Sr.), Jonathan Edwards (Sr.)
Jontavious Gardner (Soph.),
Aretavious Hendrix (Sr.)
n Wilson, Grayer, and Edwards will hold
down the safety positions, while Gardner
and Hendrix will play cornerback.
Weve had good first week, Oakley
said. Anytime we can break the ball up
against (wide receiver) A.J. (Brown), we
feel like we can stand up against anybody.
Theyre progressing pretty good.
Specialists
Wesley Albritton (Soph.), Ben Griffith (Sr.),
Cameron Johnston (Sr.)
n Albritton will handle the field goal
duties, while Griffith will be the punter.
Johnston returns as the long snapper.
Weve been working on consistency,
Albritton said. Weve got the leg, weve
just got to put it in there. Kickoffs have
been consistent getting the ball down the
field and hopefully getting it in the end
zone.

Montgomery
has
had to learn a new
coach
Ricky
Woods
system. Woods replaces Jamie Mitchell, who left the
school in May after five seasons to become head football coach at North Little
Rock High in Arkansas.
Montgomery was in the
playbook all summer trying
to get a sense of what Woods
expects from his offense.
The whole summer,
thats all we were doing,
just learning a whole new
offense, Montgomery said.
It was pretty hard, but
weve got it down a little bit
now. It will take more practice and more reps to get the
fundamentals down. Weve
got the core down.
Woods
understands
what its like for a first-year
starter to have to learn a
whole new offense, but he
has seen Montgomery accept the challenge. That
takes a load off his mind.

I think hes going to be

OK, Woods said. Hes going to manage the game,
he throws OK, he can run.
Very, very easy to coach.
Very attentive. Hes sort of
what you want from a quarterback. Hes got leadership
skills.
Montgomery wants to
focus on his throwing ability, but he possess the skills
to be a dual-threat quarterback. He didnt get to show
off his running skills last
season, but growing up,
Montgomery always had
the option of tucking the
ball and cutting up field.
My coaches always told
me if you dont see nothing just run and get what
you can, he said. Im not
stressing the ball running,
but if I have to I will.
Along with Montgomery,
Woods will have sophomore
Ben Owens at quarterback.
Senior Jonathan Edwards
and junior Willie Gay might

see some snaps at quarterback, but both play on the

defense.
Montgomery has talented skill players around him.
Brown is coming off a year
in which he had 60 catches
for 1,125 yards and a teamhigh 17 touchdowns. Brown
is one of the top players in
the state of Mississippi and
has several scholarship
offers from Southeastern
Conference schools.
Junior running back Avery Brown rushed for 358
yards and four touchdowns
last season. He also had
eight catches for 91 yards.
Im just glad there isnt
that much pressure on me,
Montgomery said. The
more pressure Ive got off
of me, the more I can do
better. I just have to get it to
their hands and they make
plays easily.

QUARTERBACKS
Montario Montgomery (Sr.),
Ben Owens (Soph.)
n Montgomery will get his shot at
quarterback this season. He played in nine
games last season, but he saw limited
action. Owens is the only other quarterback
listed on the roster. He hasnt played in a
varsity game.
Hes got to manage the game and hes
just got to play within himself, Starkville
High coach Ricky Woods said of senior
quarterback Montario Montgomery. Dont
turn the ball over and dont make mistakes.
Running Backs
Avery Brown (Jr.), Andreus Swanigan
(Soph.)
n The Yellow Jackets lost their top two
rushers from last year, but Brown was third
with 358 yards and four touchdowns. Swanigan only played in one game last season
and carried the ball just two times.
Theyre going to be guys that youre going to have to tackle because theyre going
to be pretty good, Woods said.
Wide Receivers
A.J. Brown (Sr.),
Cameron Eichelberger (Soph.),
Keion Smith (Jr.), Cameron Gardner
(Soph.), Rontavis Clark (Sr.), Tyler Stovall
(Jr.), Tavian Clark (Jr.)
n The Yellow Jackets have several options at wideout, but Brown will be the main
focus. He led the team with 17 touchdowns
and was second with 1,125 yards. Woods
will shuffle in players at this position.
Theyre battling for jobs, but you can
play more than one receiver because youre
going to need to be two to three deep anyway, Woods said. Its an offensive thats
friendly for receivers.
Tight Ends
Parker Lemm (Sr.), Isaiah Knox (Sr.),
Trevaughn Hardwick (Sr.)
n Lemm will be the focal point at this
position. He had four catches for 64 yards
and two touchdowns a season ago.
Were a major threat being able to widen out into a receiver or stay closed in as
a tight end, Lemm said. Theres endless
possibilities at the tight end this year.
Offensive Line
Kobe Jones (Sr.), Quez Roberts (Sr.),
Conner Reineke (Sr.), Lamarcus Logan
(Soph.), Tarius McNair (Jr.)
n Lee Grisham, the former offensive
coordinator at West Point High, will lead
the group. Woods has seen the players use
good footwork, and he trusts Grisham.
Theyve got to work together more so
than the defensive front does, but I think
were OK, Woods said.
Defensive Line
Maleke Bell (Sr.), Lorenzo Dantzler (Sr.),
Kobe Jones (Sr.), Nelson Jordan (Jr.)
