Section Four: Differentiating Instruction through Technology

Student-Centered Technology plays a very important part in the classroom for the teacher
and the student. Student-centered learning moves students from passive receivers of information
to active participants in their own discovery process. This process allows the teacher and the
student to get a better idea of what they may need to work on for improvement. Using
technology to differentiate instructions in the classroom will include word process, classroom
website, and ongoing assessment.

Word process will be used in the classroom to create many different things such as
worksheets, test, quizzes, and notes send home to parents. Using word process to create
worksheets gives the teacher a chance to assess the students capabilities in the classroom. Also
the worksheets allows the students to start problem solving and decision making on their own in
the classroom. The use of a different toola computer with word processing softwareto
complete a task traditionally completed with pencil and paper introduces a new realm of possible
differences in attitudes, interactions, instructional strategies, and written products
(Wood, 2000).
Classroom website will be used in the classroom as an educational resource to further
research instructions in the classroom. The students will be able to go to the website for many
different things such as questions, chatting, and other instructions. This website would be
consider communication and collaboration between the students and teachers. Teachers can
create classroom blogs as a place to publish student writing and showcase student projects, and
by extension, develop student ownership (Richardson 2006a).

Ongoing assessments will provide the teacher with better ways to provide the
instructions to the students. Each student needs to have an ongoing assessment to make sure that
they understand the lesson being taught at that time. The teacher can then decide who needs what
in the classroom and why they need it to improve their instructional skills. Assessment is the
process of gathering information or data on student performance to inform instructional decisionmaking (Nitko and Brookhart 2010). This will give the students a chance to problem solve
during the assessment and the teacher a chance to do some decision making. Once the
assessment is complete then the teacher will know exactly what needs to be done to help the
students improve.

Using technology to differentiate instructions could be good and then it can be not so
good in this case. The ongoing assessment is a great solution to differentiate instructions for the
students and the teachers. Whereas using the classroom website will not be so good because the
some students may not know how to properly use the website. That could become a problem
because not everyone is digital literate. The teacher has to keep the students in mind when
creating differentiate instructions. The whole purpose of creating instructions is to make sure the
students understand the lesson as it is being taught. The word process is another type of
technology that teachers use to provide instructions. This type of technology can be very helpful
because it provides the teacher with a way to make test and quizzes to assess to students.
Putting technology in the hands of students has many benefits. It supports their ability to
communicate, create, and collaborate with technology (Jenkins, 2009; Shirky, 2008), to develop
higher order thinking skills and to engage with course content.

Using technology to differentiate instructions in the classroom will include word process,
classroom website, and ongoing assessment. Word process will bring in the use of worksheets,
test and quizzes. Classroom website will bring in use of better understanding of the instructions
in the classroom. Lastly ongoing assessments will bring in something for both the students and
the teachers which is improvement.
