Helloandgoodmorning,Iamadisabledveteranandserved7yearsintheUSArmyanddeployedto
combatzones3timesinIraq.Myfatherwasapoliceofficerfor30yearsandalsoservedintheUSArmy
duringtheKoreanWarConflict.IhadjoinedtheUSArmybecauseitwasmydutytoservethisgreat
nation,todefendfreedom,theconstitution,tofreethefreedomlessandtodowhatsrightlegallyand
morally.Nowwedonotknoweachotherinanywaybutwhatyouredoingbynotfollowingthe
SupremeCourtsruling,andbynotupholdingthe1stAmendment,youmaamareadisgraceto
everythingIfoughtforandgotinjuredforwhileIservedandyoureadisgracetoourfoundingfathers
andallthemenandwomenthathavefoughtforthiscountrythatweretryingtodefendfreedomforall,
nomatterwhatracetheyare,whatbackgroundtheyarefromorwhatsexualpreferencetheychose.
Now,Iamprettysurethatyouhavenothadapropereducationonthefoundingofthecountryandits
quitepossiblethatyouhavenocollegeorHistoryeducation.IjoinedtheservicebecauseIwantedto
protectthisgreatnation,eventhoughIdidntagreewiththewarinIraqanddisagreedwithour
government,Istilljoinedandserved,puttingmypersonalbeliefsasidefortheGREATERGOODofour
country,youneedtodothesame.
So,whatIamgoingtodoforyouisgiveyouacivicslessonthatwillexplainthatwhatyouaredoingis
wrongandYOUshouldbeheldincontemptofcourtandputinjailfor.Youseeeventhoughthe
constitutiondoesnotstateaseparationofchurchandstate,itdoesstate,thattheFirstAmendmentto
theConstitutionprohibits"anestablishmentofreligion."Whichinlegaltermsmeansthereisa
separationofchurchandState.Theattackonseparationofchurchandstateinvolvestwistingwords
andreadinghistorybackwards,anditinvolvesmakinganinconvenientpartoftheConstitution
disappear.Mostardentlyespousedbyloudfoesof"biggovernment,"theattackaimstoplace
governmentinchargeofAmericans'spirituallives.JohnAdamssignedthe1797TreatywithTripoli,
whichreassuredthatMuslimnationthat"theGovernmentoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaisnot,inany
sense,foundedontheChristianreligion."
TheideaisthattheFramersdesiredaChristiannation,inwhichgovernmentoversawthespiritual
developmentofthepeoplebyremindingthemoftheirreligiousdutiesandsubsidizingthechurches
wheretheyworship."Establishmentofreligion,"inthisreading,simplymeansthatnosingleChristian
denominationcouldbeofficiallyfavored.Butofficialprayers,exhortationstofaith,religious
monuments,andparticipationbychurchbodiesingovernmentwereallpartofthe"originalintent,"the
argumentgoes.
Becausethewords"separationofchurchandstate"donotappearintheConstitution,theargument
runs,thedocumentprovidesformergerofthetwo.Itsbosh:ahistorical,untextual,andillogical.
PatriotslikeThomasJefferson,JohnAdams,andJamesMadisonwereprofoundlyskepticalaboutthe
claimsofwhattheycalled"revealedreligion."Aschildrenofthe18thcenturyEnlightenment,they
stressedreasonandscientificobservationasameansofdiscoveringthenatureof"Providence,"the
powerthathadcreatedtheworld.Jefferson,forexample,tookapairofscissorstotheChristianNew
TestamentandcutouteverypassagethatsuggestedadivineoriginandmissionforJesus.Intheirlong

correspondence,JeffersonandJohnAdamsswappedfrequentwitticismsaboutthepresumptionofthe
clergy.("EverySpeciesoftheseChristianswouldpersecuteDeists,"AdamswroteonJune25,1813,"as
soonaseitherSectwouldpersecuteanother,ifithaduncheckedandunbalancedpower.Nay,theDeists
wouldpersecuteChristians,andAtheistswouldpersecuteDeists,withasunrelentingCruelty,asany
Christianswouldpersecutethemoroneanother.Knowthyself,HumanNature!")Aspresident,Adams
signed(andtheU.S.Senateapproved)the1797TreatywithTripoli,whichreassuredthatMuslimnation
that"theGovernmentoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaisnot,inanysense,foundedontheChristian
religion."
JamesMadison,thefatherofboththeConstitutionandtheFirstAmendment,consistentlywarned
againstanyattempttoblendendorsementofChristianityintothelawofthenewnation."Whodoesnot
seethatthesameauthoritywhichcanestablishChristianity,inexclusionofallotherReligions,"he
wroteinhisMemorialandRemonstranceagainstReligiousAssessmentsin1785,"mayestablishwith
thesameeaseanyparticularsectofChristians,inexclusionofallotherSects?"UnliketheArticlesof
Confederation,theConstitutionconspicuouslyomitsanyreferencetoGod.
Thewords"separationofchurchandstate"arenotinthetext;theideaofseparationis.ArticleVI
providesthatallstateandfederalofficials"shallbeboundbyoathoraffirmation,tosupportthis
Constitution;butnoreligioustestshalleverberequiredasaqualificationtoanyofficeorpublictrust
undertheUnitedStates."TheFirstAmendment'sEstablishmentClauseprovidesthat"Congressshall
makenolawrespectinganestablishmentofreligion"meaningthatnotonlynochurchbutno
"religion"couldbemadetheofficialfaithoftheUnitedStates.FinallytheFreeExerciseClauseprovides
thatCongressshallnotmakelaws"prohibitingthefreeexercise"ofreligion.(Theseprohibitionswere
extendedtostategovernmentsbytheFourteenthAmendment,whoseframersin1866wantedtomake
surethatthestatesmaintainedfree,democraticsystemsinsteadoftheoldantebellumslaveoligarchies
thatspawnedtheCivilWar.)
Sonowthatwehavethatoutoftheway,youdohavetherighttoyourpersonalbeliefsbutthe
momentyousworeanoathtoserveinofficeandtoupholdthelawsthatgovernyourcounty,stateand
country,youneedtoliveyourpersonalbeliefsatthedoorbeforeworksothatwecanasasocietyto
maintainafree,democraticsystem.Whichleavesyouwithtwooptions,resignyourofficeforfailureto
completeyourdutiesasapublicofficialorstarthandingoutlicensestoallcouplesregardlessofthe
sexualorientation.Youseewhenyougetmarriedunderthestate,itsintheeyesofthestatenotGod
becauseofaspresident,Adamssigned(andtheU.S.Senateapproved)the1797TreatywithTripoli,
whichreassuredthatMuslimnationthat"theGovernmentoftheUnitedStatesofAmericaisnot,inany
sense,foundedontheChristianreligion."So,withthatbeingsaid,whenacoupleismarriedbythestate
itisundertheeyesofTHESTATENOTGOD.Ifyoureacouplewhogetsmarriedinachurchthenthatis
UNDERGOD.
Maam,Iservedandmanyothersdied,andmanyofthosethatgavetheirlifeforyour

freedomsweregay,and/orTransgender.So,youractionsrecentlytellmethatitisokforthose
veteranswhohavemadetheultimatesacrificeforyourfreedomsbutthosesamegreatpeople
arentallowedastatemarriage.YouarebasicallysayingthattheirlivesmeantNOTHINGtoyou.
Maybeyouneedtohavesomeempathyforthosewhojustwanttoloveanotherhumanbeing
andwhywouldGodhaveaproblemwithtwohumanbeingslovingeachother?Whybecause
somebookcalledthebiblewhichwasNOTCREATEDbyGODbutbyagroupofoldmenwho
wantedtoUSEJesusteachingstoCONTROLPEOPLEbymakingitagovernment?Abookthat
throughyearsoftranslationhaslostsomuchduetotyrants?MaamGodmakesandcreatesus
inhisimageandiftherearegaypeoplethentheyweremeanttobecreatedthatwaybecause
GodintendedittoBETHATWAY,whyshouldtheynothavethesamerightsthatusstraight
peoplehave?Youmaamarenobetterthanthepeoplewhothoughtslaverywasok,that

segregationwasjustifiable,orthosewhothoughtwomenshouldnthaveequalrightsasmen.Ihope
Godforgivesyouandguidesyouintherightdirectionwhichisallowingstatemarriagesforsamesex
couples.YourchurchreservestherighttodenymarriageunderGod,youasacivilservantmustuphold
thelawwhetheryouagreeordont.Iwillprayforyouuntilyouseetheerrorsofyourway.Butdont
worryifyoudontfindtherightway,becausethelawdoesntcareaboutyourpersonalbeliefsandthey
willarrestyoufornotupholdingthelawandagaindontworrybecausemygeneration(Millennials)
WILLmakesurethatsamesexcoupleswillhavetherighttomarrylongafteryourgonefromoffice.
