Invent a Country
This interesting activity teaches students basic information about countries.
Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each student.
Procedure
To start the activity, write the categories from the worksheet on the board. Go through each
category and use the students country as an example.
Example:
Country: Thailand
Nationality: Thai
Language: Thai
Hello: Sawat-dee
Please: ga-ru-nah
When you have finished the example with the class, read the introduction and explain to the
students that they have to invent a new country and complete the information about their
country in the first column.
Explain to the students that this is a light-hearted activity. The students should be creative
and come up with unusual words and ways of doing things like greeting each other.
When all the students have completed the information about their new country, have them
stand up and meet the people from the other countries of Merth. The students then complete
information about two other countries.
The students should also demonstrate how they greet each other and the taboos of their
country.
The students use the questions at the bottom of the worksheet to help them complete the
information about their own country and to ask questions to the people of the other
countries.
After everyone has completed their worksheet, have a class feedback session to find out
about the various countries of Merth.
