PREFACE
Robert Schumann's Variations on a Theme in E flat
major, later knowa as the “Ghost Variations", were com:
posed in February 1854 a few weeks before his internment
in the insane asylum at Endenich, Due to the harrowing
events of ths period Clara Schumann — to whom the work
dedicated — jealously guarded the manuscripts of this
Piece, her husband's last composition for piano, as if they
were sacred relies and forbade any attempt to publish
them, Not until 1989 did the fist edition finally appear. As
it departs in many respects from Schumann's ma
wwe have chosen to present the work here forthe first time in
an Urtext edition based on all available sources.
At this period in his ife Schumann imagined himself to
be surrounded by ghosts who played music to him, some of
it wonderful’, some oft "hideous. They not only promised
him the ‘most magnificent revelations’ but also threatened
as his highly concerned wife r.
Tn the night from the 17th vo the 18th of February he
claimed to hear angelie voices offering hi

theme in E flat major, which he wrote down on the spot. A
fow days later, probably on 22 and 23 February accord
to Clara Schumann's and Ruppert Becker's diary entries,
he composed a set of variations on the same them
tunately all that has survived of this first draft is a single
leaf written on one side only (source Al). As a result, we
cannot be certain how many of the total of five variations
were completed at that tim
On 27 February Schumann again wrote out his “Ghost
Variations”; Clara Schumann even speaks of a “fair copy”.
In the midst of this activity he loft his home half-dressed
and le attempt, threw himself into the icy waters
of the Rhine, from which, as is well known, he was rescued
and taken home again. One day later he completed the
work he had interrupted so dramatically and sent the man-
script to his wife, who on the previous evening, acting on
the advice of a physician, had moved to the home of an ac-
quaintance. This complete autograph manuseript (source
A2), though not fair in all sections, has likewise survivedvl
andl was recently made available tothe world at large by its
a facsimile edition (see ‘Soueves’)
The “Brafims Estate’ in the library of the Gesellschaft
der Musikfrennde in Vienna also contains a corrected man-
uuscript copy of the variations, [tas heen shown to be the
work of a Diisseldosf copyist who had worked for Sehu-
mann on several occasions (source Ab). It is uncertain
exactly when Brahms came into possession ofthis copy (the
only known one ofits kind): but presumably this happened
cone year after these tervible events, for Clara Schumann
entered copyiat’s costs for the E flat major Variations in her
“Haushaltbuch” in April 1855. From an editorial and
philological standpoint this copy is especially important as
it helps xs co decipher Schumann's sometimes indistinct
handwriting in source A2, which served as its immediate
number of rorrections, some
of them superseding A2, which were in all likelihood the
work of Schumann himself. Finally, several further entries
prove that it served indirectly as the production master for
the first edition of 1939.
