2015 - 2016 Grading Policy

Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology

The primary purpose of our school is to ensure students achieve their full potential. Grades are intended
to capture students progress toward meeting grade level benchmarks as students move toward high
school graduation. Grades are not intended to be punitive. Grades should reflect student mastery, as
opposed to student effort or participation. Grades should motivate students to work hard and improve
their academic performance over time. G and parents thus should be updated on a regular basis by
teachers. The policy below is intended to ensure fair and consistent grading practices in alignment with
mastery learning.
Grading Scale
Grades are assigned based on a seven point grading scale, as dictated by the State of North Carolina
Board of Education:
A:

90-100 = 4.0

B:

80-89

C:

70-79 = 2.0

D:

60-69

= 1.0

F:

< 59

= 0.0

= 3.0

Grading Guidelines

Grades must reflect a continuum of standards based on achievement.

Teachers will base their grades on the following:

o

70% of a students formal grade will be based on common formative tests,

comprehensive writing assignments; projects (minimum of 4 assignments per quarter)

30% of a students informal grade will be based on warm-ups, notebook checks, quizzes,
group work, in-class tasks, class participation. (minimum of 8 assignments per quarter)

Class participation rubrics must be approved prior to use.

In order to ensure equity, Professional Learning Communities will establish standards

based common criteria for student work and assessments using a rubric.

All grades must be calculated based on 100 points.

The lowest F earned will be 50%. If a student does not attempt an assignment, a zero will be
entered.

A student should be assigned grades often that the student is able to learn and improve based on
the feedback provided by the grade. The chart captures the number of grades (at the minimum)
that should be assigned to a student each quarter.

Grades for all assignments must be entered in PowerSchool weekly or within 72 hours of the
assignment given.

Rubrics must be provided for open ended responses (short answer, essays, labs, other
performance tasks)

Mastery Learning

If a student fails a formal assessment, the student may have an opportunity to retake any failing
assessment within a week after the test has been given. This mean students must see graded
assignment with any corrections/feedback provided.

Prerequisite assignment, tutoring, and test corrections to all work prior to retest.

If a student retakes an assessment the new grade will replace the first grade not to exceed a C.
Thus the highest grade a student on a retest is an 79%.

Late Work

Arrangements must be made within 5 school days with teacher from the assignment due date to
receive full credit. If the assignment is not turned in by the agreed upon date, the assignment will
be counted as late. A log will be kept to document conversations and agree upon due date for the
assignment(s).

It is the students responsibility to communicate with the teacher regarding missed assignments
from an absence.

A zero will be placed in PowerSchool for any missing assignment until the assignment is made
up.

Late work will be penalized 10% each class period that it is not submitted if the student was
present in class or school on the due date.

A teacher may choose to provide extended time for students to complete missing assignments.
