GRADE 10 DRAMA (ADA2OIP)

COURSE OUTLINE
Course Code: ADA2OIP
Grade and Type: Grade 10 Dramatic Arts
School and Department: Eastwood Collegiate Institute, English and Drama
Department
Year: 2015-2016
COURSE DESCRIPTION (or, WHAT we are going to do this year):
The grade 10 Dramatic Arts course builds on the Grade 9 course; it extends the range of
performance, analytic, theoretical and thinking skills that students need for success in secondary
school programs. In this course, students study a wide variety of performance materials, and
explore dramatic forms, conventions and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic
sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will continue
studying Theatre History, including Commedia Dell Arte, and will reflect on their growth through
journals and adjudications. An important focus of this course is learning in a collaborative
environment, creating characters and dramatic situations through physical and external means.

ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION:

The grade 10 Dramatic Arts course consists of 6 units, each containing multiple activities within
the unit, as well as a summative. Students are evaluated on their achievement of expectations
through the four categories indicated on the Ministry of Education documents. These categories
are listed below:
Assessment for this course will use a formula which combines term and summative
work as follows:
FINAL GRADE (100%) = TERM WORK (70%)+ SUMMATIVE WORK (30%)
Term Work = 70%
Knowledge -10%
Thinking/Inquiry 10%
Communication 20%
Application 30%

Summative = 30%
Summative Project 30%

The final mark is based on the students most recent and consistent performance by the end
of the course, in all four categories. Varied opportunities are used to assess and evaluate
achievement: diagnostic activities show what students already know and need to learn;
formative exercises and assignments help students improve; and summative work shows
what students have finally learned. To the extent possible, learning skills are not considered
in your marks.

MISSED WORK:

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION

You are expected to bring a pen, paper, a notebook and organizer such as a school agenda,
and any relevant materials every class. A notebook is required as you will be taking notes and
adjudications for all class presentations.

It is expected that students complete all assigned work in a timely manner. Students who
are absent on the day of an assessment (e.g. test or presentation) or when an assignment
is due, must speak with their teacher when they return to make arrangements to
complete the required work. Whenever possible, students will inform their teacher in
advance of their absence.
Each assessment will have a final date of submission after which it will no longer be
graded. This date will be clearly communicated to students by the teacher. Work that has
not been submitted by the final due date will be deemed incomplete for the purposes of
grade reporting. Failure to complete all required work will negatively impact a students
final grade, and may prevent successful attainment of the credit.
In addition, students who do not submit work in a timely manner should expect to have
this reflected in the Learning Skills and comments sections of the report card.
PLAGIARISM:

Do not copy other peoples work. Plagiarism is stealing someones material and ideas
without giving them credit, and trying to pass off their work as your own. Its wrong.
Students who commit an academic offence will face one or more of the
following consequences:
Redoing part or all of the assessment under direct supervision, or completing an alternate
assignment.
Limited access to academic recognition, school awards and scholarships.
Additional consequences related to the students behaviour, including community service
hours, detentions

and/or suspensions.
LEARNING SKILLS:

Learning Skills contribute to effective learning and they will be part of the report card.
The skills are as follows: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work,
Collaboration, Initiative, and Self Regulation. The evaluation of these skills, apart
from any that may be included as part of the curriculum expectations of the course,
should NOT be considered in the determination of percentage grades.

Communication is between home and school is proven to improve student achievement. We value this and would
love to keep the lines of communication open. Many teachers use the Remind system and email. Please ask your
son/daughter about the conversation they have had in class about this. They will have email addresses,
communication systems, and/or teacher websites to share with you.

Please sign below after you have read through the course handout with your parents. Return the form to your
teacher by Monday September 14th:
