society.
English Language Arts IRP, BC Ministry of Education
Welcome to English 12! This year, we will explore several different types of literature, including short
stories and poetry. You will be writing stories and poems, as well as researching and writing
paragraphs and essays. We will be examining work critically and learning how to make a clear and
compelling argument. There will also be informal and formal oral presentations. There will be a lot of
reading and a lot of writing, and it is expected you will keep up to date with both. If you are having
trouble or falling behind, come talk to me and I will help you catch up.
COURSE TOPICS: English 12 has three broad components.
1. Oral Language (Speaking and Listening)
General Learning Expectation: Students use oral language to collaborate effectively in a variety
of situations, to express themselves with confidence, and to listen critically (e.g., examine
historical, social, and political contexts).

2. Reading and Viewing

General Learning Expectation: Students independently and collaboratively read and view a
variety of grade-appropriate literary, information, persuasive, and visual texts, with increasing
complexity and subtlety (e.g., literature from a variety of perspectives, journal articles). Students
read for enjoyment and to increase fluency.

3. Writing and Representing

General Learning Expectation: Students create a variety of texts, including meaningful
personal texts, purposeful information texts, and effective imaginative texts for a variety of
purposes (e.g., critique, engage and entertain).
