Rationale:
Asagroupoffivegirls,wewantedtohoneinonapieceofbingewatchingthatwecould
relateto.WeunderstandhowweourselvesaswomenwatchTV.Wecanguesswhatgenre,
howmanyepisodesandwhattimeofdaywearemostlikelytowatchit.However,whatwedont
knowforsureishowtheoppositesexinteractswiththesubject.Whatgenredomenactually
watchthemostoften?Dotheysitdownforanepisodeanightorpowerthroughfourduringthe
day?Evenlookingatourownintuitionwithwomen,theresultswillmostlikelyvary.Ontopof
that,howdoesitactuallyaffectouracademics?Wearecollegestudentswhodedicatehoursto
schoolworkeveryday.SowhatdohoursofviewingactuallylooklikeonourGPA?Thatiswhy
wedecidedtogettheanswersandfindproofforthequestionswehave.
Ourresearchquestionsdevelopedintothefollowing.Howdogenderandageaffectthe
amountofbingewatching?Istherearelationshipbetweenbingewatchingandacademic
performance?sthereadifferencebetweenmaleandfemaleperceptionofhowbingeviewing
affectstheirlife?
Wearelookingtofindresultsonthebasicquestions,howmuchTVdoyouwatchaday,
whatprogramsdoyouusetowatchit,whattimeofdaydoyouwatchit,etc.Addinavariableof
genderandcomparingthoseresults.Thenputtingtheaveragesofeachgendersresponses
alongsidequestionslike,whendoyoudoyourhomeworkandhowmanyhoursdoyouputinto
schooldaily?Wearehopingtofindwhatrelationbingewatchinghasonoverallacademic
performance.
Togetstarted,wefirstneedtodefinebingewatching.AccordingtoGeoffreyGraybeal,
aprofessoratTexasTechUniversity,bingewatchingisclassifiedaswatchingthreeormore
episodesofthesameshowinarowinonesinglesitting.
Interestingly,afterlookingintothetopicmore,wefoundastudythatpresenteduswitha
possiblevariable.Fewpeopledescribedbingewatchinghalfhourshows,whichsuggeststhat
theyactivityisprimarilyforlonger,moreseriousshows.Thisstudy,postedintheAtlantic
Magazinebringsupaninterestingvariablethatwillneedtobeaccountedforinthesurvey.If
someonedoesnotclassifybingeingwhentheyarewatchingaseriesof30minuteshows,then
theycanskewourresults.Soweneedtolookintothebestwaytodefinebingewatchingfor
themandthenbreakdownthequestionstoaccountforthisvariance.
Afterwehavedefinedourvariables,weneedtolookatwherepeoplearewatching
theseshows.AccordingtoNielsen,38%ofAmericansuseorsubscribetoNetflixwhileonly
18%reportedlyuseHulu.Couldthemediumberelatedtoastudent'sacademicsuccess?While
wewontinfercausation,itcouldbeinterestingtodetermineifthemorepopularmediumsinturn
fallalongsidehigherorlowercollegesuccessrates.
Finally,intermsofbingewatchingeffectsonmenandwomen,wefoundafewscary
statistics.Surprisingly,inregardstoourearlierestimates,thelinebetweenhowmanymales
andfemalesbingewatchisveryclose.AccordingtoastudydonebyAnnalect,67%ofwomen
and59%ofmenreportedlybingewatch.Ofthem,57%offemalesand47%ofmalesclaim
thatithasnotimpactedthetimetheyspendinotherareasintheirlives.EverydayHealth
reportedthat,Arecent
surveybyNetflix
foundthat61percentof1,500onlinerespondentssaid
theybingewatchtelevisionregularly.
Soifpeopledontfullyunderstandtheeffectsofbingewatchingontheirownbodies,do
theyreallynoticearelationshipintheirschoolwork?Aftergettingthenumbersandanalyzingthe
data,wehopetofindananswerandeducatecollegestudentontherealitiesofthisfunbut
potentiallydetrimentalhobby.
