Further Oral Activity Reflection

School Name: Overseas Family School

Aims for the Task:
My aims for this activity is to understand the varying aspects of visual language and the many
unnoticeable decisions the artists makes just to emphasise an issue. I also want to have a deeper
understanding of how the media takes advantage of how we think and persuade a certain idea, such
as the aspects we. I want to improve on the development my personal opinions on the feelings I get
when seeing an example of mass media, and be able to connect to the language analysis and context
more specifically.

Comment on your performance and the progress you made in achieving the aims above.

Include specific examples of your content, structure and sequencing, and language choices to
support your reflection.

!The purpose of choosing an oral presentation focusing on propaganda is to develop my

!understanding of how propaganda has evolved from two distinct time periods to the target
!audience that specific era, and how it reflects the nature of society in general and the artists
!views on the issue (e.g. Black Civil Rights). I decided to do this by comparing and
analysing two propaganda posters, one from the Black Panthers (a strong political group) to
one about a universal idea of racial equality. I believe that I achieved in understanding
further the knowledge about visual literacy and the decisions the artist made in their own
context. For example, I learnt about the Black Panthers and their campaign tactics
(aggressive; their logo being the black panther pouncing). I realised that the 1970s poster I
chosen was a different technique to the their usual style (portrays an innocent boy
advertising newspaper), so I had to research and find out the artists intentions for the
diversion of their iconic advocation style, and the implications of those changes to the
audience. As a result, I could have a deeper understanding of how advertising works and
the techniques used to persuade the masses from the artistss perspective. For example,
Shepard Faireys iconic style of motif background and graphology of text are not just for
artistic aesthetic tastes, but it serves a purpose of emphasis and connotations of seriousness
about the neutrality of race in the context of the poster. At then end, I was able to connect
the relationship between language, context and meaning, using the case study I used to
show how they are interconnected (time contexts can alter meaning based on the target
audience).

Overall I think that my performance wad good, even though I went over the estimated time
limit (8 minutes) and I missed out on some points I have written on my cue cards. My
powerpoint presentation organisation of my points and the sub-topics I presented were
concise and cohesive, so that the audience could follow my thought process, while
addressing the goal of the FOA.

I studied the 2010 poster, I learnt that when it is viewed from the 1970s and the
! When
it can show two slightly different message: one about black civil rights to
! 2010s,
equality of all races. My foes topic relates to Mass Media and Persuasion as
! propagandas main purpose is to persuade a wide audience on a controversial issue,
! usually focusing on using one bias for the masses to follow. I structured the response
! by firstly giving background information about the two contexts in which both posters
! are displayed to the target audience, like the Black Panther poster targeted at African! Americans who felt injustice towards them.
!!
! In conclusion, I can say that my progress towards achieving my aims was good and
! effective, as I now have a deeper understanding into Propaganda, and Mass Media
! persuasion technique in general, like the choices the artist would use to appeal to the
! audience, as well as making a cohesive design that would catch the audiences
! attention. Lastly, I could have structured my responses more carefully and concisely, in
! the sense of forming and elaborating on a thesis and connecting how the posters I
! have chosen are examples of my main focus, which is propaganda.
