[Note: 1. *.lp2 files which can be opened only in the iLeap software of CDAC. This is
multilingual software including most major Indian languages. A link to download this software is
provided on the <Download> page. This is a shareware which will be fully functional for 3 months
after which period, unless lisenced for a fee, some of its functions are restricted. The advantage of this
software lies in the function of transcription. Though all the files furnished are in Devnagari script,
these can be transcribed (transliterated) to any of the major Indian scripts. This will be of particular
help to those not familiar with Devnagari and will like to read the Sanskrit files in their script. The
transliteration facility also includes Roman script.
2. *.rtf and *.doc files are furnished with the Devnagari (Marathi or Sanskrit) fonts
and can be opened in MS Word and other popular word processors. For these files you need to
download the Devanagari fonts and install them on your computer, as described on the page.
3. *.PDF files can be viewed and printed online. The link on this page leads to the
contents page where all the files are listed. These can be downloaded through browser menu.. ]
The literature presented on this website has been created using the iLeap Software. If this
software is not available on your computer, you may click on the Click Here for download iLeap
Software link, just above the table, to download a limited edition of iLeap Software on your
Computer.
Also, if you are having problems viewing certain Stotras etc in MS Word, it is advisable to
download the necessary Devanagiri fonts by clicking on the Click here to download Devnagari Fonts
option.
In addition to Books, you will find a few Stotras to be downloaded (in Sanskrit) with the
authors comments. The table showing these is at the bottom of the Download page.

This is the option to register your name. It has been discussed above.
This table was devised for the guidance of seekers of the Grace of Lord
Dattatreya to solve worldly problems. It is a grid of Devanagari letters. A seeker is supposed to pray to
the Lord and Shri Swami Maharaj, close his eyes and move the mouse over the table and click on a
letter. Originally he/she was required to get the guiding verse by joining every 19th letter from the
letter arrived. In this electronic edition, the guiding verse (Marathi) is automatically displayed, along
with Hindi and English translations. Since most of the instructions pertain to the reading of a particular
composition of Shri Swami Maharaj, knowledge of Devanagari script is necessary. However, since we
are providing iLeap files on this site, even those not knowing Devanagari script can still read the
prescribed book after transliterating the same to a script of their choice.
Click on the text Click here to go to the Prashnavali, it will appear as follows:

Click on the Top button to go back to the main screen of the Prashnavali.
Here, in this link you will find the chronological history of events in life the life
of P.P. Shrimad Vasudevanda Saraswati Tembe Swami Maharaj; especially his eventful journey
throughout the country. There is a map indicating some of the important rivers and places that Swami
Maharaj frequented during his travel.
You may find the the addresses and contact telephone numbers of all the
Institutions, all over India, dedicated to Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati Swami Maharaj on the page.
Where available links have been provided to the sites of theses institutions.

Acknowledgement:- The immense task of the construction of this site is largely a collective
work of many individuals and institutions. Much of the works of Shri Swami Maharaj being in
Sanskrit and great care needed to be taken to eliminate errors. This became possible only because of
the voluntary diligent, efforts of several scholars. This has been a selfless and dedicated labour of love
for them. They do not expect any recognition of any sort. However we find it essential at least to
record their contribution here, which is the least we can do. Besides their names lend an authenticity to
this compendium. This is not a formality but an expression of our heartfelt gratitude.

YATRA OF SRI SWAMIJI IN ANDHRA PRADESH

BHAKTHA VASTLA DATTATREYA
RAJAMUNDRY
Adv. Krovvidi Venkata Srinivas : L. L. B. Advocate - R. K. Puram, Hyderabad.
Mr. Srinivas is a devotee of Sai Baba and has received spiritual guidance from P. P. Sri Sri Gudumala Venkata Rangacharyulu
and an anonumous Yogi he met at Kalishwaram on the bank of Godavari River. With the blessings of his Guru Shri Shri G. V.
Rangacharyulu, he has established a trust Shri Shri Anagha Guru Datta Sansthan Trust with the objectives of propagating life
history of Lord Datta and his desciples, spread Datta cult and serve the poor by way of education, food, sheltter etc. The Trust has
released an audio cassette of Dattatreya Shasranamam by Professor Neelakantha of Osmania University, Hyderbad. They have
also published books by P. P. Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati (Tembe) Swami Maharaj like Dattabhavasudharasa Strotra, Dattatreya
Shodashavatar Puja Vidhi and Dattatreya Ashottarshat Namavali and Yoga Abhyas by P. P. Shri Brahmananda Saraswati. They
also manitain a website www.Dattatreyam.org on Lord Dattatreya.
Sri Guru Dattatreya Swami is an eternal incarnation of
the all-pervading Vishnu in Kruta Yuga. Unlike other
incarnations, this one has no end since His work never
ends. While maintaining His original form, Lord Dattateya
manifests Himself in new incarnations throughout the
different ages, assuming appropriate forms. He is the
perennial source of knowledge, will power and action1 for
all true seekers like Karthavirya , Vishnudatta, King Yadu,
Parasurama, Prahlada, Alarka and others. In this age of
Kali, when man is so weak and vulnerable and Dharma
obscure, He assumed human form as the son of Shri
Appalraju and Sumati in Pithapuram and then as Shri
Nrusinh Saraswati Swami as the son of Madhav Brahmin
and Ambika in Karanja abou 100 years later. Over 600
years later Lord Dattatreya incarnated, for the third time
in the Kali Age as Shri Shri Shri Shri Vasudevanand
Saraswati (Tembe Swami) as rhe son of Ganesh Bhatta
and Rama Mata.(1854 1914).
Shri Tembe Swami Maharaj took the vows of
renunciation in 1891 AD after the death of his wife in
Gangakhed on the banks of River Godavari. After
receiving the monastic sceptre, he travelled all over India
on bare feet to propagate the teachings of Vedic religion
and guide people to the righteous path. In the years 1907
-1908, Shri Swami Maharaj travelled in the South. After
visiting Rameshwaram, he spent the 17th Chaturmas in
Tanjavur and travelled along the banks of Krishna River.
After completing the 18th Chaturmas in Muktyala (Krishna
District, Andhra Pradesh), he crossed over to the banks
of Godavari River, visiting the Seven streams of Godavari
he reached Veda Vadapalli(the village still exists with the
same name near to Rajamundry) where Datta Jayanthi
(Birth Anniversary) was performed. From their he
proceeded to Konguru where he met P.P. Sri Brahmanand
Saraswati Swamiji.
Shri Brahmanand Swami was very elated to meet
Shri Swami Maharaj whom he had long desired to meet.
He invited Shri Swami Maharaj to Rajamundry2 and fulfill
his intense wish of installation of the idol of Lord Dattatreya
and Paduka at the auspicious hands of Maharaj, on the

full moon day of Magha month. Shri Swami Maharaj

consented to this and proceeded on his travels. During
this period, he went to Pithapuram and identified the birth
place of Shripad Shrivallabh. Even the residents of the
town were not aware of this fact. Shri Swami Maharaj
installed Padukas of Shripad Shrivallabh at the birth place
and moved on to Kakinada and returned to Rajamundry
where Brahmanad Saraswati Swami was waiting for him.
There, in the Shankaracharya monastery on the
banks of Godavari, he installed the Datta idol with three
faces and Datta Paduka, as per the desire of Shri
Brahmanand Swami. Until then Shri Swami Maharaj had
installed Datta idols with one face (Ekamukhi). This was
probably the only three-faced idol Shri Swami Maharaj
ever installed. Shri Swami Maharaj named the idol
Bhaktavatsal Datta. On the day of installation itself a lady
afflicted with an evil spirit came to worship the Lord and
started screaming. After calming her, Shri Maharaj gave
a Mantra for recitation. The lady recited the same with
faith and devotion and was soon relieved of her affliction.
The Bhaktavatsal Datta as well as the Paduka
are even today worshiped at the Monastery which is
looked after by a Trust led by Adv. Sheshagiri Rao.
Sri Brahmanand Saraswati Swamiji3 hailed from Patamata
in Vijaywada Taluka, Krishna dist Andhra Pradesh Place.
He was born in the year 1863, on a Sunday and full moon
day of Bhadrapada month (September), in a family of
Bharadwaja Gotram, called Govindraju. His parents are
Sri Govidna Raju Raghavachruyulu and Tirumalamba.
Christened Panakalu after the presiding deity of Mangalgiri
where the family resided at the time of his birth. Panakala
Swami of Mangalgiri is a form of Lord Laxmi Narasinha.

P.P. Shri Vasudevanand Saraswati (Tembe)
Swami Maharaj is an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya, a
Self-realized soul and a staunch adherent of Adi
Shanakaras doctrine of non-duality. Thus he not only
believed that the Ultimate Reality is One without another,
Immutable, Indivisible continuum of Truth,
Consciousness and Bliss, utterly imperceptible to human
senses and thus without any conceivable attributes
(Nirgun) ; he was deeply immersed in the experience of
this Reality. He has vigorously propounded this Path of
Knowledge (Dnynayoga) in his extensive literature. And
yet, for the ordinary aspirants, he has recommended the
path of the Worship of the Divinity with Attributes
(Sagunopasana). Even in his own life he rigorously
followed the Path of Karma and adhered to the worship
of idol even in his itinerancy (Sanysa). When he was
once asked the reason for practicing Sagunopasana, even
after attaining the Nirgun state, he replied, How can I
give up idol worship through which I have attained this
exalted state?
This apparently contradictory conduct is in fact
in line with the most, if not all, sages in Indian tradition,
who though established in the Reality without attributes,
have always advised the worship of Saguna. The basis
for this is found in Bhagavadgit (BG). In response to
Lord Shrikrishns advice to be devoted to Him and to
direct all actions to Him, Arjuna, in the initial stanza of

the 12 th chapter, asks categorically to specify who,

between the seekers of yourselves and those of the Eternal
Imperceptible, are the superior Yogis?1 Lord Krishna
clearly states, Those who diligently and with absolute
faith, worship Me, with their minds immersed in Me
(Manifest Divinity), are in my opinion the supreme
Yogis!2 In the next three verses, Lord explains how the
path to Inconceivable is strewn with difficulties and
tribulations and how arduous it is for the human beings
to attain the Non-manifest.
The Formless, Eternal, Infinite, Immutable and
Disinterested One assumes form and attributes through
His Yogic Potential known as My and creates the world,
as stated by Shri Swami Maharaj in Shri Gurustuti in
Dwishasri Gurucharitam (Dw.G.C.)3. Even those who
profess to worship the God without form cannot worship
the Absolute Non-manifest, for It is beyond human
conception. For example adherents of Islam worship Allah
without form; but the Quraan lists 100 names of Allah,
each based on one of His attributes such as Compassion,
Potency, Immanence, Justice etc... Besides, the reverence
offered by Muslims to Qba borders on idol worship. The
Christians also worship and revere the cross and other
images. In fact almost all religions in some form or other
practice idol worship in one form or the other. This is
only to show that human mind is incapable of grasping
even the concept of the Nirgun.
The path to realization of this inconceivable Self
has been elaborated by Maharshi Vedavysa in
Brahmasutras. Essentially, the Nrgun and Saguna Brahma
are not two entities but aspects of One Reality. Selfrealized sages like Saint Dynneshwar do not distinguish
between these entities.4 Shri Swmi Mahrj himself has
elaborated the same truth in his Vriddhashiksha affirming

the unity of Datta propounded by Upanishads and the

one to whom Puranas pay tributes. Dr. Jayendra Shastri
Dave has dwelt upon this essential unity of the Divine in
its overt and occult forms. He starts with drawing parallels
between Valmiki, Vys and Shri Swmi Mahrj 5
asserting this unity in respect of their own prototype of
Saguna Lord. Next he reviews the undercurrent of the
same premise in the Gurustuti of Dw.G.C. in context of
the major Indian systems of philosophy. He then proceeds
to summarize the path of knowledge which comprises of
intellectual understanding of the Reality as depicted in
Upanishads (Shravana) from a learned and self-realized
Guru, its contemplation (Manan), finally meditation over
it (Nididhyasan) to finally Realize it ones own Self.
Upanishadic elucidation comprises of threefold assertion.
Positive statements in respect of the nature of the Truth
are known as Vidhivakya or Swarup - laxana e.g. Truth,
Consciousness, Bliss, and Ultimate Reality etc... The
negative assertions ( Nishedha Vkya ) exclude and
distinguish the Self from the phenomenal world, e.g.
Infinite, Indivisible, Immutable, Incommunicable,
Formless etc. The third type of assertions relates the Self
to the phenomenal world (Tat?astha Laxana), e.g. Creator,
Destroyer, Supporter, Cause etc. Equipped with this
understanding of the Self (Paroksha Dnyn), the aspirant
contemplates upon it so as to assimilate it. Finally, he
continuously meditates upon it so as to Realize the Self.
This is then followed by identification of individual Self
with the Universal Self.
However not everyone can set off on this path.
Acquisition of the divine wealth (Daivi Sampat) is a
crucial prerequisite. Essentially this wealth consists of
noble qualities of mind (equanimity, self-restraint,
tolerance, contentment, faith and a quieting of desires6)
in addition to discrimination, detachment and the strong
urge for Self-realization7. Rare indeed are the souls so
endowed! Shri Swami Maharaj while according the prime
status to the Samadhi thus attained, proceeds to aver that,
those unable to follow this path will achieve the ultimate
blissful state by constant and loving devotion to the
Supreme Lord Dattatreya.8

Jaimini in Purva Mimansa. Those based

mainly on the Vedic statements prescribing
rituals ( Karmanga ) are known as
Karmangavabaddha Upsan. For example,
adoration of the letter Om as Prna,
worship of the weapon Ukthya as Prithvi, worship of the
funeral fire as Agni and so on as stated in the Sma
mantras. Where the aspirant deems gross objects, which
are not part of any Karmanga, viz. a name, mind etc., to
be the Self, it is known as Pratikopsan or symbol
worship. In the third type of Sagunopsan the aspirant
identifies himself with a particular form of Divinity viz.
Daharksha (Microcosm) or Vaishwanar (Fire). Such
identification is only possible with great effort and is an
essential step to attain unity with Nirgun Brahma. After
eulogizing these three ways (Upsan) and describing
their excellent consequences viz. attainment of
Brahmaloka and other higher spheres after death and
finally, union with Nirgun Brahma at the end of the Kalpa
cycle.
After strongly denouncing the Tantric
Vmamrga (the left path) advocating consumption of
alcoholic drinks and other deviant practices Shri Swami
Mahrja turns his attention to idol worship which is not
found in either of the Mimanss. Though not explicitly
advocated by Vedas, idol worship is supported by Puranas
& Smritis, and is honored by sages. He recommends this
path particularly to the weak humans in the age of Kali
who lack intellectual capacity as well as intense
detachment. The Supreme Lord, Formless though He is,
manifests in an idol if it is beautiful enough and is
profusely worshiped with intense loving devotion.9 The
Lord grants liberation even to ordinary aspirants, feeble
though their detachment, sincerely seeking His grace.
After citing Samartha Rmads of 17th Century as a
shining example of sainthood attained through idol
worship, Shri Swami Mahrj recounts the life of more
recent and less known saint Shri Nryan Swami Maharaj
of Narasob Wdi10. We have reviewed this in the previous
Souvenir11.
In Vedic literature we find reference to the eight icons of
the Supreme Spirit viz., The Earth, The Fire, The Water,
The Sun, The Moon, The Life Force, The Space and The

Human Soul12. These are domain of human

perception and hence subject to worship by
all. In fact, as Shri Swami Mahrj pointed
out to his Guru Shri Govind Swami, that
Brahmins are enjoined to worship Agni and
Surya, when directed by the latter to practice Paduka
worship. However at present, the followers of Vedic and
other Indian religions accord a preeminent place to the
age-old practice of idol worship. The great apostle of NonDuality, Adi Shankara himself instituted the Panchyatan
worship to bring about amity among the worshipers of
five principal deities of the time.
Of course, by far the majority of Deities are not visible
or perceptible to human beings. Indeed, there is a school
of thought that these Deities do not have a form. Shri
Swami Mahrj has refuted this opinion and has affirmed
that the Devatas of Vedic religion have forms in
Kumrshiksha, citing a story from Ken Upanishad13. The
Supreme Being though One14 assumes five (major) forms
to bless His devotees. He also incarnates in human form
to bless His devotees. One such incarnation dwells on
the banks of Krishna River, guiding His devotees through
dreams that come true, relieving them from the afflictions
by spirits and other ailments and fulfilling their desires15.
The forms, figures, attires, weapons etc. of these deities
have been described by the seers in the religious texts.
On the basis of these traditional descriptions, idols are
made and worshiped. Various incarnations of these deities
are also venerated in the form of idols.
Idols for worship can be made from stone, metals, wood,
earth, sand etc. Of these, idols of mind (Manomayi) are
considered the most superior 16 . According to the
scriptures, the Divine manifests Itself in an idol in
proportion to its splendor, the piety of the priest and
intensity of worship17. Thus idol worship is an esoteric
method of invoking divinity, which is experienced not
only by the priest but also all who worship it. In fact it is
an ancient technique for harnessing the divine power for
individual and collective happiness. Most of the ancient
famous temples located in the numerous holy places in
India are in fact spiritual powerhouses according to
Swami Vivekananda, benefiting hundreds of generations
of devotees. The ultimate source of all this spiritual energy
is the intense piety and devotion of the hoary lineages of
saints. This is very succinctly stated by Shri Swmi
12

Mahrj in the 21st chapter of Dw.G.C. while explaining

to Tantuka (weaver) as to why people throng Shrishailya
and other holy places when God is omnipresent. He says
that these holy places have been consecrated by the
presence of the great pious souls and hence the Supreme
Spirit is constantly awake there,18 fulfilling the wishes of
the worshiping devotees.
It will be apt to say that it was mainly to revive this ancient
technique of idol worship that Lord Datta invited Himself
to Managaon for a seven-year stay. Shri Vasudev Shastri
left Wadi thinking about the necessary preparations. On
the way to Managaon, as he was passing a goldsmiths
shop in Kagal, the goldsmith, acting upon the divine
message in a dream, approached the Shastri and offered
to cast an idol to the Shastris specifications. Vasudev
Shastri gave the specification and stayed in Kagal for a
couple of days and obtained the idol cast by the goldsmith
who was paid by some religious people by voluntary
contribution.
The Managaon temple: - Elated by the
acquisition of the idol, Shastriji proceeded to Mangaon.
As he was approaching his home, a vacant piece of land
caught his attention, which he thought suitable for the
temple. By a happy coincidence, couple of days later, the
widow who owned the piece of land, acting upon
directions received in a dream donated her land to Shastriji
for the proposed temple.
Having thus received the idol and also the land
without much effort, Shastriji immediately started the
construction of the temple. With inspired assistance from
the residents in the form of material, money and labour,
the temple facing east, was completed in a mere seven
days. A well was dug up nearby in three days. Shastriji
himself constructed the sanctum with bricks laid by his
own hands. The idol from Kagal was consecrated in the
new temple on the 5th bright day of Vaishakh of A.D.
1883.
As per His pledge, the Lord took residence in the
Managaon temple, as evidenced by the subsequent
response of the people, their experiences and general
prosperity of the place. The place became well known in
a short span of time and people started coming in hordes,
especially on Saturday evenings when a palanquin with
the movable idol (Utsav Murti) of the Lord used to be

taken out, circling the temple three times, singing the

Names of the Lord, bhajans and songs in his praise. The
offerings of the devotees used to be collected in heaps
and distributed as prasad. The festival of the Birth
Anniversary of Lord Dattatreya was also celebrated on a
large scale. Around 8-10 thousand people used to partake
the meal (prasad) on the occasion. People afflicted with
evil spirits etc. used to attend the Saturday palanquin.
Shastriji gave them the advice on the means to relief from
their sufferings. Also wishes of many people were fulfilled
through Shastrijis advice, which consisted mainly of
some form or other of the worship of the Lord.
Since Shastriji believed this temple was an
extension of the Narasobawadi temple, all cash offerings
in excess of a rupee used to be sent to Wadi. Shastriji
could be persuaded to accept only a quarter of the
remaining income for his household. Shastriji himself
stayed alone in the temple premises and used to obtain
foodstuff by mendicancy and cook himself after
distributing to the guests of the temple. He used to
discharge his priestly duties with great dedication, strict
discipline and deep love. A couple of cows and dozens of
dogs formed a part of the temple establishment and were
well looked after. All major traditional Hindu festivals
were celebrated in the temple as in any Hindu family.
An Audumbar tree grew in the foreground of
temple. A platform was built around it and Shri Datta
Padukas (Foot-prints) were installed on it and regular
worship accorded to them. Everything was conducted
strictly according to the scriptural code. On many
occasions, Shastriji sought and received the instructions
from the Lord. Smallest deviation or contamination, used
to invite reprimand of the Lord and the guilty used to be
punished and purification carried out.
The seven years in Managaon, Shri Datta Prabhu,
mostly through the medium of the Kagal idol in the
sanctum, closely guided Shri Maharaj in every respect,
be it daily worship, family problems, scriptural knowledge
or yogic practice. During this phase, we find their
relationship predominantly a Master-Disciple one.
The Lord directed every action of Vasudeva
Shastri and the slightest disobedience invited harsh
punishment. Examples of such disciplining are numerous.
Once when Shastriji was forced by his mother to
accompany her to Gokarn for pilgrimage, he was bitten
by a viper on the way and felt better only when the
pilgrimage was abandoned. Once he tasted a sweet at the
instance of mother against the Lords wishes. This led to
Shastriji developing a stroke which was relieved only by
the mothers prayer to the Lord for forgiveness and a
promise not to force Shastriji to disobedience. Shastrijis
father-in-law, Babaji Pant once forced Shastriji to take
some medicine for a prolonged fever urging that the

n |vx - {S +vx, hM

medicine was pure. As soon as Shastriji took

the medicine, he threw up and fell
unconscious. The terrified Babaji Pant
confessed to have lied and prayed for the
pardon of the Lord. This led to Shastrijis
quick recovery; but he had to perform absolutions
afterwards.
Whenever in doubt Shastriji used to pray to the
Lord and he used to receive instructions either in the
dream or in waking state as a spoken word. Step by step,
the temple of Mangaon evolved into a pilgrimage place
for the devotees of the Lord; and simultaneously Shastriji
grew in spiritual stature, attaining perfection in Yoga and
in Vedic knowledge even as his devotion became more
and more intense and steadfast.
On occasions, the Guru Raj used to test him. Once
Shastri Maharaj had a vision of a man with a palanquin,
asking Shastriji to ride it since his sojourn on earth had
come to an end. As unperturbed Shastriji complied, the
vision disappeared. On another occasion, he was
forewarned during meditation of his imminent affliction
by leprosy. On waking up, a hand and a foot of Shastriji
were numb. This continued for four days. Shastriji
accepted it as Prrabdh. However, he was soon cured of
the malady. When he enquired about the incidence, the
Lord said, Just tested your determination!
When at the end of the seven year period
mandated by the Lord ended, Shastriji was ordered by
the Lord to pack up and leave Managaon with his wife.
The Kagal idol in the sanctum insisted on accompanying
Shastriji Thus when Shastriji left Managaon, he had two
idols, the usual thumb-sized idol and the Kagal idol.
Movable Utsavmurti was thereafter installed in the
sanctum.
In the second year after his renunciation, Shri
Maharaj was passing through Sarangpur, one Govindrao
solicited the idol from worship. Shri Maharaj tried to
dissade him warning that it is very difficult to worship
adequately and thus it would destroy the very home where
it is housed, even the place. At Govindraos insistence he
gave him the idol. Within a few years Govindraos son
died and soon after he himself got sick. One priest from
Badhavai was direced in a dream to take the idol and
install in the Vasudev Datta Mandir there, where it is
worshiped till today.
Thumb-sized idol: - Shastriji was instructed by
Shri Dattaprabhu to get a small idol for worship during
travel. By one more happy coincidence, a goldsmith from
nearby town offered a thumb-sized idol made of an alloy
(Panchadhtu)., as a token of his gratitude for his release
from jail by Shastrjis prayers to Dattaprabhu. At this time,
Shastriji brought it to the notice that while in travel he
may not be able to offer the elaborate worship that is

75

nM, nM, {n nM

offered in the temple. The Lord replied that

during the travel a bath in cold water and a
dab of ashes would be adequate worship.
In 1894 AD, after the Chaturms in
Petld, Shri Maharaj came to Chikhalad
and stayed on till Deepavali, at the instance of many
devotees and seekers who wanted to learn yoga as well
as scriptures. On the eve of the first day of Deepvali, the
Lord reminded Shri Maharaj of the festival and demanded
He be offered Mangal Snn (auspicious scented hot water
bath). Shri Maharaj remonstrated that being a Sanyasi,
he could neither touch (use) fire nor obtain any scents
and perfumes. He further reminded the Lord of His
promise to be content with water and ashes.
Next day, Shri Maharaj bathed the Deity with
cold water and applied ashes as usual and proceeded
with his routine. At noon, after the Bhiksha, when Shri
Maharaj approached the Lord to offer the solicited food
(Naivedya), he heard a loud sound like an explosion
followed by the voice of the Prabhu, How dare you
offer me food on a Deepvali day without the auspicious
bath? I am sitting in the Narmada! I dont want your
Naivedya. When Shri Maharaj came to the riverside,
he heard a childs cry. Following the direction of the
sound he went into river, when a mystical light guided
him to the location of the idol. Overwhelmed with love,
Shri Maharaj dived into the river and clutching the Lord
to his heart, returned to the bank, his eyes filled with
tears and voice choked with emotions . In the meanwhile
the devotees of Shri Maharaj had already gathered to
find out why Shri Maharaj went to the river at the lunch
hour. On learning the Lords wish, they brought hot
water, perfumes and other requisites and Shri Maharaj
worshipped the Lord with pomp and ceremony. Shri
Maharaj composed the following verse commemorating
the Lords Lila (play): -

j j V bi* i {x BE i **1**
n{iS E* j x i] x**2**
nHS bh* {HS i `h**3**
h xn* ni nk {xn**4**
Even though friends may fight,
They soon enough reunite
When consorts do skirmish
Their love doesnt an iota diminish.
With the Devotee the Lords conflict
Is an outpost of love transcendent?
Says Vsu such merriment,
Provides Datta with intense delight.
Once at Brahmvart, a learned scholar questioned his
idol worship, Shri Maharaj said he was ready to give it
up, but the idol wouldnt leave him. On the scholars
19

insistence he put down the idol into the stream of Ganges.

However, as soon as they came out of the water, the idol
reappeared before them causing the scholar to repent and
practice idol worship. He became an ardent devotee of
Shri Maharaj.
Shri Swami Maharaj was finding it bothersome to
cater to the whims of this childlike idol and sought to
make some alternative arrangements for the same. Sensing
this, the idol hid itself in an isolated place from Shri
Swami Maharaj heard the sound of a childs cry. After
that he resigned to keeping the idol with himself.
However, once upset with some such behaviour of the
idol, he said aloud, Why does someone not steal this
idol? This was overheard by a young disciple of Shri
Maharaj one Venkatappa from Belgaon, Karnataka stole
the icon. Divining this, Maharaj told him, Acquiring the
idol only the beginning. What if you buy an elephant if
you do not have the wherewithal to nourish it! The tougher
part comes later, in worshiping it to Lords satisfaction.
Venkatappa a very devoted disciple left Brahmvart to
Mandaleshwar where he stayed on worshiping the idol
for several years. He then set off on a circumambulation
of Narmada and could not be traced.
Lord Shrikrishna states in Gita that he responds to
the devotee in the same manner as approached19. The
Supreme Spirit returns the love of a devotee in a
complimentary fashion. Those who look upon Him as a
Father are treated as sons; those that look upon Him as
friends find an ideal friend in Him; those who loved Him
as a paramour are beloveds to Him; so much so that those
who hate Him are His enemies. All these approaches, says
Bhagawat, are acceptable forms of devotion and all these
devotees are finally liberated.
We sea an illustration of this principle in the bahvior
of the above two icons. While the idol from Kagal is
mature and dominating, ordering Shri Maharaj about and
punishing him if need be, the smaller idol betrys a
childlike nature, throwing tantrums on negligence and
crying alone when hurt. Even the voice of crying that
Shri Maharaj heard was that of a small child. Thus we
may infer that Shri Maharajs feelings towards the Kagal
idol was those of a disciple seeking guidance while he
looked upon the little idol as a loving parent.
Thus, we have seen that the idol is a symbol of the
Formless Eternal; it is also a medium through which the
Supreme Spirit can communicate with the devotees;
further, it is an aid to concentration of mind for meditation;
and finally it is also a storehouse of spiritual energy that
can be harnessed for the common welfare. With the last
object in mind, Shri Swami Maharaj has installed several
images of Lord Datta all over India. One such image has
been installed in the Shankar Math at Rajmahendri in

Saraswati of Kshi. This is perhaps the only Datta idol
with three heads that Shri Swamiji has installed. On the
day of installation itself a lady afflicted by an evil spirit
started crying and gyrating in front of the idol. Shri Swami
Maharaj relieved the lady of the affliction.
The supreme form of the Divine with attributes one
can worship is of course Shri Sadguru, ones spiritual
mentor. He is the living temple of God. According to
Gurugita meditating upon the physical body ones Master
is equivalent to the meditation of the Eternal Self20. Shri
Swami Maharaj has recounted an episode from the life

of the Prime Guru Lord Dattatreya dwelling

on the banks of Krishna River.(vide supra.)
Such a Guru is Lord Brahma though not
having four heads; He is Lord Vishnu
though not having four arms; and he is Lord
Shiva though without the third eye (Gurugita)21. Let us
dedicate this literary service to the Him who dwells the
universe in the three forms of the Supreme Lord, the Master
and the Self, in the following words of Shri Swami Maharaj.
