Well most of you that have been clients of Premier Irrigation & Landscape
for any time at all know that Continuing Education is important to me for
several reasons. First of all, with investing as much money and time as I
did to get my Bachelors of Science degree from Oregon State University, I
feel it is important to keep that educational advantage as one of the things
that differentiates us from the average landscape contractor in the valley.
Secondly, I am mandated by three different agencies to do so. As an
Oregon Landscape Contractor I am required to have 16 hours of continuing
Education in a two year certificate period. As a Commercial Pesticide
Applicator, I am required to have 40 hours of continuing Education in a 5
year certificate period. And as a Certified Golf Course Superintendent (even
though I havent been in the golf industry for a while), I still choose to keep
this certification active, because it is so hard to get. Only 14% of Golf
Course Superintendents in Oregon were certified when I was in the
business, and with that, I am required to have 120 hours of continuing
Education in a five year period. Luckily for me, some of those credits cross
over to all three categories. I guess one of the most important reasons
continuing Education is important to me is the value it gives my clients. I
feel it is my responsibility to help out my clients, while working for them
under contract or not. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to be able to
share my gained experience and knowledge to help a client, friend or family
member. And what was really unexpected is the satisfaction I get from
passing along my knowledge to my crew and students. On another note
most of you know that I have been a part time instructor in the Landscape
Program at Rogue Community College. I have been filling in one capacity
or another for about 5 years ago. I have taught a pesticide license
recertification classes, Landscape Management class, a CCB License
Renewal class, and this upcoming spring I have the Site & Landscape
Planning class. I believe in supporting the Landscape program at RCC and
sit on its Board of Directors to help guide the program. One of the steps of
this support was to have an internship available for a student of the
program. This summer my intern, whose name is Ben Elrod got a good
taste of the landscape industry, as we do a wide variety of tasks here at
Premier Irrigation & Landscape. After he fulfilled his internship hours, I
hired Ben and he is working with us on our crew in a Regular basis now.

Water Conservation
Two of the most recent Continuing Education Classes I have attended
include a CLIA (Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor) class and a Smart
Controller Class put on by both Medford and Ashland City Water
Departments.
As most of you know, as severe as the drought of 2014 was, there is
potential for even more water rationing and restrictions in the near future.
It only makes sense to be as frugal with irrigation water as possible.
A few water use facts:
Residential outdoor water use accounts for nearly 9 billion gallons of
water each day,
Experts estimate that as much as the water we use outdoors is
being wasted due to evaporation, wind or runoff caused by inefficient
irrigation methods and systems,
A home with an automatic irrigation system that isnt properly
programmed or maintained can waste as much as 30,000 gallons of
water annually,
A single broken or missing sprinkler head could waste as much as
25,000 gallons of water over a six month irrigation season,
A ET (Evapotranspiration) based time clocks, deemed Smart
controllers, can save approximately 50% of irrigation water use, on
average,
The city of Medford and Ashland are working on Policies and Procedures to
enact a rebate program for Smart Controlled irrigation systems. Please
visit their web sites to follow the progress, and glean other helpful
information on Water Conservation from these sites.

Ashland Water Commission - http://www.ashland.or.us
Also, if you look on the City of Ashlands Conservation Divisions page, you
will find a Rebate program encouraging the removal of lawns in order to
install a Lower Water Use alternative landscape.

Water conservation is at the HOT TOPIC right now, and I think with
continued drought, these discussions and actions are only going to come to
the forefront even more.

As we close out the Irrigation year, I have some time to reflect on the
past year, and evaluate the things I felt we did a good job with, and find
solutions to areas I felt we came up short in. I am lucky to have a group of
really great clients to work with, and I hope we have served your needs well
in the past year. I am always open to suggestions on how we can improve
and I value your thoughts and feedback, which help us improve our
business and provide better customer service.
