For those who have checked the school calendar through our website over the past week, you
will have seen that there has been a change of platform, with us now using a Google calendar.
You will have also noticed that a lot of key dates have been uploaded, especially in regards to
Parent Teacher Consultations and Report distribution. In due course, Mr Rose, Head of
Curriculum & Assessment, will be sending through more information about the following
important dates:
Friday 2nd October:
Tuesday 27th October:

Progress Reports distributed

Parent Teacher Consultations no timetabled classes.

CCAs are now in full swing and it is great to see so many of the secondary students taking part
in a variety of events. I am also impressed by the number of students who are arriving at school
before 6:30am to train for swimming, athletics and netball. A big thank you to all of the teachers
who support this extremely valuable programme. This week also saw the start of the football
seasons with both the O15 Boys and Girls teams competing against Dalat.
Last week the Head of Secondary PE, Mr Pearson, announced the U15 FOBISIA Squad who will
be representing Uplands at Dulwich College, Suzhou in November. From my experience three
years ago, this is a very difficult trip for our students, mainly due to the weather conditions (cold,
windy and rainy), but I am confident the team will do very well. Congratulations to all who are
involved.
I would like to remind everyone that we encourage all students not to leave their books and other
belongings lying around the campus. All students have a locker and this should be used at all
times for the storage of valuables and personal possessions. Secondary students need to take
ownership of their own behaviour, as well as their belongings, and in doing so, should all have
a padlock on their lockers. All students are given ample time to return to their lockers at the start
and end of break and lunchtimes and they need to ensure they are organised properly.
Have a great weekend.

PSAT Test Enrolment

Dear Parents/Guardians,
It is becoming time for Uplands to determine the exact student numbers for enrollment in the
upcoming PSAT and PSAT 8/9. Once we have determined the final and specific number further
detailed information will be sent out. Please contact me at bmitchell@uplands.org to register
your son/daughter.
Have a great weekend ahead!

Head of Pastoral, Universities & Careers
From my letter of June 2015:
Dear Parents/Guardians,
PSAT & SAT Testing/Preparation at Uplands
As students enter the final stage of the year with exams and exam preparations complete, we
are also looking ahead to next year and higher education readiness. In May of 2016 the SAT
will undergo an overhaul as will the 2015 sitting of the PSAT/NMSQT. To allow our students
access, practice, benchmarks and information for college readiness, Uplands will offer two
testing sessions. With its tightly aligned exams, the SAT suite offers a powerful tool for
monitoring student progress toward college and career readiness.
For Year 11 & 12:
The PSAT/NMSQT 10 will be hosted at Uplands on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.
The goal of undertaking the PSAT at Uplands is to aid in college and career readiness. With
this in mind, the PSAT test will be open to those students in Year 11 and 12 in October. The
benefits for those students as they engage in career and college research are:
On average those that take the PSAT score higher on the SAT.
Student Search Service receive information from schools.
My College QuickStart - customised college and career online service.
Scholarships NMSQT entrance for eligible students to the National Merit and other
programs.
For Year 9 & 10:
The PSAT 8/9 will be hosted at Uplands on Tuesday, November 3, 2015.
The PSAT 8/9 is taken in Year 9 and 10. It establishes a standard against which to gauge student
progress.
Free Practice Powered by Khan Academy:
Students who take any exam in the SAT Suite of Assessments will receive personalised SAT
study resources based on their results. Their Khan Academy practice experience will be
adaptive and tailored to meet each students individual needs.

The calendar for the coming weeks and months is filling up quickly as we confirm events and
dates for the remainder of Term One. Next week Year 3 students will visit Taiping Zoo on
Monday, and on Thursday Year 3 children will experience an in-school visit from representatives
of the Butterfly Farm. Next Friday I will travel to KL to attend a weekend iPad Conference being
held at ISKLs Melawati Campus. The following week Year 4 will visit the Youth Park on the
morning of 23rd September and 5s students will take a walk to see Roti Canai being made. School
will be closed on Wednesday 16th September for Malaysia Day and again on Thursday 24th
September for Hari Raya Raji.
Parent Information Evening: On Wednesday 23rd September, Primary class teachers invite
parents to visit classrooms where information will be shared about; communication channels,
classroom routines, curriculum and resources. Each class teacher will hold two sessions, the first
beginning at 7:00pm and the second session beginning at approximately 7:45pm. Refreshments
will be served in the Refectory at 8:30pm. For those parents who have more than two children in
the Primary School, you may decide how you share your time so that you can visit all your
childrens classrooms between 7:00-8:30pm. We hope as many parents as possible attend to
develop a greater understanding of what learning looks like in your childs classroom.

Story by Malaika Macoun

Ever thought there might be more to the frog prince story than meets the eye? Well there is, this
is my story.
The freshly fallen leaves crunched under my feet, I saw just ahead of me my favorite picnic spot.
I walked along basket in hand when I thought I saw movement in the trees, probably just a wild
animal I told myself, a very hungry animal. Gulp!
I was from a small village in the middle of nowhere, a very poor small village. All day long I did
chores, I should be hunting with the rest of the men but influenza spreads quickly in my village
so they always leave a healthy man or two behind and that seems to be my permanent position.
What I would not give to have a better life!
I walked up to my picnic clearing, paradise compared to my village, and with its lovely pond full
of frogs in the center it could be paradise compared to any village. Just as I was about to sit down
an old hag jumped out of the bushes, Give me the food honey she demanded in an old, croaky
voice. I almost gave it to her, but then I remembered that giving up the food would mean giving
up my special picnic, and I only got to do it once a month due to my crazy amount of chores. I
was starving and though she dressed as an old hag she was really rather fat. After contemplating
this, I said no.
The hag got angry. There was smoke and I felt the basket being taken from my hands. The next
thing I knew I was a FROG, the whole package. At first I freaked out, jumping to amazing heights
and croaking like crazy. Then I stopped and really thought about what had happened to me, I
thought to myself maybe being a frog is not so bad, it is probably better than my human life
anyway. You never know until you try! I did try and I finally discovered the place I belong.
With all the food you can eat, and all the friends you can friend. I may be no prince in the human
world, but in the frog world I rule all!

Dear Parents,
As you are aware we now have four houses at Uplands School. Crag, Hill, School and the newest
house Kelawei.
Thank you to all who have volunteered to make history by being the first resident members of
Kelawei House. The children are looking fantastic, together with the other houses, in their bright
orange shirts.
Our reinvigorated housing system seeks to increase participation and pride at school events,
motivate students to focus on learning and increase school community engagement and
participation. The system remains an integral part of the school and forms the backbone of the
school's positive incentive scheme and achievement strategy.
In all aspects of the house system, participation is rewarded as each House seeks to build its own
identity and develop and support a collaborative house and whole school ethos.
However,

Please let us know if you are willing to make the change. I would appreciate hearing from you
via email: daniel.naidoo@uplands.org
Kind regards,
Daniel Naidoo

Dear Parents and Guardians of Year 12 and 13 students,

Could you please make sure that the information provided regarding students details which is
entered on the schools SIMS database is accurate and up to date. Whilst collecting and checking
the details provided on the recent permission slips for the upcoming Year 12 trip, it was apparent
that there were a number of discrepancies between that information and the information on
SIMS.
Could I please ask that this information is updated. To provide the updated information please
just go and see our admissions desk in the schools main reception and they will be happy to
assist you.
Your co-operation on this matter is greatly appreciated.

This week our Year 12 IB geographers started a unit entitled Movement responses- migration.
In this we examine all factors associated with migration; causes, impacts on people and place, as
well as, social, cultural, environmental, political, moral and ethical issues. We study these factors
against a backdrop of real life examples. With the scale of the migrant crises currently engulfing
The Middle East, North Africa and Europe, never has it been more apparent how relevant our
subject is to the world in which we all live.
Many of these issues are both complex and difficult to discuss and process. I have taken the
decision not to use the photograph of little Aylan Kurdi, as a parent and human being it is
extremely distressing. Although it may prove in time to be a seminal image.
We will be using the current crisis as the basis for our discussion over the next few weeks and I
have every confidence that our students will approach the issues with real maturity, compassion
and empathy. Hopefully they will gain from the process on a multitude of levels. If nothing else
such events should serve to make us all pause, realise how lucky we are, and gain a sense of true
perspective. As well as recognising the relevance of what we do in the classroom in terms of the
world in which we live.

TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE REVISION

Introduction:
This is the second article offering guidance on study, revision and exam preparation. As you
already know pupils in years 10 to 13 will be receiving some coaching and guidance about study,
revision and exam preparation as part of their PSHE lessons this semester (prioritizing the grade
11s and 13s first due to their exam commitments this year).
Mr. Johnston (School Counselor) and Mrs. Bush (Learning Support) will be running 3 articles
each a fortnight apart in the newsletter which aim to provide parents with a summary of
information given to the pupils in PHSE so that they can support their child at home to study
and revise effectively.
The articles will be entitled:

Tips for effective Study (Friday 28th August newsletter)

Tips for effective Revision

Tips for Managing Exams

Revision skills:
What is Revision?
The study of something studied before.
A process that improves the memory of and understanding of previous studies.
The science of revision:
Every time we learn something new a neuro pathway is formed.
When we revise something the neuro pathway is strengthened.
When we are interested in the subject and motivated to learn, the pathways are strengthened
further.
How are memories stored?
Memories are stored as mental images in the form of words, sounds, colour, shape, pictures
moving or static, diagrams, voices, music, poems, smells, tastes, body feelings, thoughts,
sensations and many other ways too numerous to be listed here.
What do you notice?
Memories are multi sensory.
This suggests that simply reading and memorising text does not necessarily complement the way
your brain processes, stores and retrieves information.

12

It also suggests that using multi sensory revision techniques will enhance memory and re-call.
Multi sensory revision:
Visual: use your sense of sight.
Make words, passages and text stand out by using color and imagery. This can be done by using
highlighters, colored paper, diagrams, pictures, video, flash cards etc.
Auditory: use your sense of hearing.
Read aloud, listen, discuss, speak, make rhymes, make audio recordings and play them back,
poems etc.
Kinesthetic:
Writing, rehearsal, actions, movement, modeling, texture, etc.
Common multi-sensory revision methods (many of these can be supported or encouraged at
home):
Reading is good but you can enhance your revision by complementing it with other methods.
Take notes / read notes

Draw a mind map

Use coloured highlighters

Use post it notes

Think of acronyms

Draw diagrams
Test yourself

Complete problems and exercises

Write practice essays / answers

Complete past papers

Post reminders around the room

Key facts

Formulae

Quotes

Examples
Use other people

Quiz your teachers

Discuss with friends, ask your parents to test you

Discuss in class and with each other

Use multi media

Search on-line

Use videos and recordings, plays etc.

Revision begins in the classroom.
Get the foundations built by:
paying attention, listening, interacting, writing notes, being organized, participating, engaging,
discussing, asking questions.
13

All these things help build and reinforce your neuro pathways.
Knowing this, it makes sense to start revision early
Practical revision tips:

Create a study routine. If you dont know how to do this speak to your tutor or Mrs Bush
(Learning Support)

Make a timetable

Stick to your revision timetable

Aim for good balance

Revise the hard subjects as well as the easy ones

Revise the less appealing subjects as well as the enjoyable ones

Adopt a positive mental attitude

Have genuine faith in your preparation

Have faith in your self discipline

Do what you need to do

Take regular breaks.
You need to know this!
Research shows that recall of information is improved if you work steadily for 25-30 minutes at
a time and take regular short breaks 2-10 minutes. (This allows the brain to process information.)
Recall of information becomes less if you study without a break for 2 hours or more.
'Insert picture here'
Physiology of remembering:
You remember (and learn) better when you are calm.
You are likely to remain calm in exams if:

You have a positive mental attitude

You have planned and prepared in advance

You enjoy the subject you are learning

You are more likely to remember if:

You use colour and imagery

Your neuro pathways are strong

You have steadily revised over a period of time

14

And finally:
Beware of cramming.
Cramming is the equivalent of stuffing your body before a sports event. If you stuff your brains
with too much information at the last minute it does not have the processing time it needs to
recall information efficiently. This increases the chances of a mental block in the exam.
Furthermore the crammed information disappears quickly after study anyway. Cramming is
usually a fear response to lack of preparation and is usually a fear inducing, sick making, waste
of time.
(Tony Buzan memory expert)
We hope this article was useful for you. If you need support to work on your organisation skills
or to develop a study timetable please speak to either your tutors or Mrs Bush (Learning
Support). If you need to develop strategies for managing exam stress look out for coming
workshops or contact David Johnston (School Counselor).

15

Last Saturday 46 Year 12 students entered the school gates to experience Uplands IB DP day.
There were three aims to the day:
1. To bond as a cohort - because these IB students will need to support each other
throughout the eighteen month Diploma Programme that they have now begun.
2. To learn about the ethos of the IB and what makes the Diploma Programme so very
special.
3. To get to know the IB support team the staff that are here to help with their journey
through the DP.
Twelve long hours later, the Year 12s returned home happy, tired and bonded: we think we
achieved our aims.
At the start of the day, the students were split into eight groups of six and the first task they were
given was to build a totem that not only represented their group, but also the ten IB Learner
Profiles. They were provided with some arts and crafts materials, and a lot of junk. You will see
from the photos what fun we had, and also what a fantastic job they did.
The rest of the day included sessions on CAS, study skills, environmental activities on the beach,
a BBQ lunch, a pizza dinner, a fashion parade, an egg throwing competition, reflection and much
more. The students were fantastic they remained engaged and enthusiastic throughout the day
and learned many things. We learned that Vanessa has muscles (apparently), Stephanie is really
caring, Joel makes an excellent model (male or female) and that Bup was a good egg. It seemed
criminal to destroy the Learner Profile creations at the end of the day and we will all miss Bob
greatly. And we will never tell the Drama Department about what we did to their lights.
You can see a few photos from the day here, and there are more on the Uplands CAS Facebook
page.
A big thank you to all the fantastic Year 12 students and also to Ms Bush, Mrs Cartlidge, Ms
Owens, Mr Cooper, Mr Mitchell, Mr North and Mr Rose for help on the day. The Maintenance
boys, catering crew and the IB cooks also need thanking.
Finally, a few quotes:
I had a lot more fun than I thought I would, so thank you so much.
We turned many imaginations into reality.
I love the IB DP Programme! I wish I could do it again sometime this year.
Well done the class of 2017.
Mr Andrew Cartlidge
IBDP Coordinator

This week kicked off with a group of Year 13 and graduate students presenting the excellent work
they did in CAS last year to the new CAS cohort on Monday morning. Tuesday saw Year12s
signing up in droves to support our Primary children in Primary Homework Club (starting next
Tuesday) and Felipe, Oli, Tim and Henri coaching the U9 boys football their CAS project this
year. The Boarders have been inundated with signups for their Boarders Tutoring project, and a
group of students from the Do Something Society has arranged to visit Lauras School on Friday
to meet the children and find out about the work the Year 13s are doing with the children there,
in order to be ready to take over when they finish. Thursday will once again see a group of
volunteers including Agastya, Tim, Mohamed and Yu Zhi at Kechara Soup Kitchen in
Georgetown, where they will be packing and distributing food to the homeless. Friday, and the
DSS will be hard at work planning their events to raise funds for Crystal Family Home in Penang,
a non-profit, voluntary welfare organisation set up by Esther and Barnabas who provide
residential care (i.e. a home) for children in need.
A busy week! Please see our Facebook page, Uplands CAS, for more details and photos of all that
is CAS!

It was great to see such a good turnout at our first Coffee Morning last week. It was exiting
meeting so many members of the UPTA community, and to receive a presentation from Ms
Lynsey Collis about the much anticipated CIS accreditation process, which we would like to
encourage all parents to support and get involved with as much as possible.
Our next big social gathering is now pencilled as a PIZZA EVENING at the Golden Sands on
TUESDAY the 6th OCTOBER 6.30PM, which is more of a social affair than the Coffee
mornings. In general we will rotate between Coffee morning and Pizza Evening every first
Tuesday of the month during school term time.
We are also pleased that most of the CLUBS we can participate in are now up and running with
