ABSTRACT

Quarry industry is a challenging industry as it usually will generate environmental

issues such as air pollution and resource depletion and will cause nuisance and danger
to the stakeholders. But there is yet proper assessment to be conducted on the quarry
industry except Environmental Impact Assessment. Hence, life cycle assessment was
proposed in this study to evaluate the environmental performance of the industry. In
Malaysia, there is none of life cycle assessment conducted on the quarry industry.

The objectives of this study are to quantify and analyze the global warming and climate
change effect, investigate energy demand and associated impact in quarry industries and
quantify the amount of resources depletion in quarry industries due to production of one
ton of quarry product. The study was conducted by using SimaPro 7.1. Data for this
study were collected from three big quarry operators in April 2014. Impact 2002+ and
Cumulative Energy Demand methodology were adopted for this study. This study only
focuses on Malaysia granite quarry industry.

13.4788kg of CO2eq is found contributes to global warming and climate change

category for every ton of production of quarry product. Besides, 0.00136kg of carbon
dioxide released has affected one person every year. The accumulated temperature rise
will be ranging from 2.368 x 10-6 C to 4.44 x 10-6 C. Overall energy consumption in
term of resource depletion for production of one ton of quarry product is 196.8715MJ
and 0.0013 numbers of people is being affected annually due to production of one ton of
quarry product. In the findings of energy demand, non-renewable fossil impact is
accounted for 193.5928MJ, about 98% of the total energy demand. The accumulated
monthly energy demand is at least 5.173E09 MJ for 334 quarries. Conclusively, quarry
operation has significant accumulated influences on the aspects discussed in this study.
