Lesson Plan (Direct Instruction) Microscope

Subject/Grade: Biology

Date: 9/15/2015

Standard:

S4-C1-PO2: Compare the form and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and their
cellular components.
ACT Objectives:
b. Explain the functions of unique plant structures, including the cell wall, chloroplasts, and critical parts
of the flower and the seed.
Objective (Explicit):
SWBAT Identify several structures found in leaves.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
Operate a light microscope
Observe a leaf cross section using the microscope
Connect the structures of the leaf to the process of photosynthesis.
Explain the importance of the leaves structures ability to do photosynthesis.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable, include variety of methods of checking for understanding):
Informal assessments throughout class time, by asking them questions as we review steps on
how to use microscope.
Have students draw what they saw using the microscope as an evidence of successfully using
the microscope.
Key vocabulary:

Opening/Anticipatory Set: (state objectives, connect to previous learning, and make relevant to real life)
Teacher will begin by asking students so what do we need to make energy? the response from
students should be oxygen, because it was discussed in previous lessons (Cycles). Teacher will then
ask, Where does most of that oxygen come from? the response should be plants doing
photosynthesis, because it was discussed in previous lesson (Photosynthesis). If students are unable
to answer these questions then it will be a review and connection to previous learning. Teacher will then
discuss how structures in the leaves help plants make food (photosynthesis) and today we will be
introducing the different structures and having the opportunity to see what they look like. The focus of

Instructional Input

today is to get familiar with the microscope by practicing while we get the opportunity to see something
not visible to the naked eye. The microscope skills learned today will be very useful for future labs.

Conclude with pictures of multiple leafs

Differentiation
Providing a video that shows step-by-step procedures
Provide a handout with step-by-step microscope use.

Independent Practice

Differentiation
Provide notes already filled in if needed.
Seating arrangement

Teacher Will:
Explain to students that now that they
have had some practice they will
independently try to use the microscope
to look at a cross section of a leaf.
Walk around class and assist with any
questions related to the microscope or
what they should be looking for.

Student Will:
Get their leaf slide
Place on the stage of the microscope
and practice the skills teacher went
over to view the item on the slide.
Draw what they see on worksheet
Share with partners what they see.

Differentiation
Provide pictures of the cross section for students unable to use the microscope
Provide extra time

Closure/Lesson Summary:
Have a few groups share anything they saw that was interesting.
Show a picture of a cross-section and introduce all the structures of the leaf (Stoma, Guard
cells, Epidermis, Cuticle, Palisade mesophyll, Spongy mesophyll), so students have an idea of
what they saw and what they will be learning more about in the next few days.
Have students do and exit ticket answering the following question, what was one interesting
thing you learned today?
