Kiara Accad final 1s Today’s Taboo Tomorrow's Trend? Hello. Welcome to the 8th Grade press conference. Thank you for attending. My name is Kiara Accad. We’re gonna talk about fashion for the ladies. But no t any. This issue is Native American Fashion. This is about tSQAPEE stealing the idea of Native American Fashion and how the trend is suddenly popular. Now before you say this is going to be boring, it’s actually interesting. Not a lot of people a about it. Let me say a little bit about it. There are many important key details you need to know about this 9. issue. One is that fashion companies release clothing that are x offensive to Native Americans. This has also been an issue in media Ws and entertainment. Ralph Lauren released an online ad for its line/\ WY that made criticism from Native Americans. (Bhasin 1). According to the Hoe video Cultural Appropriation of Native American Heritage, Urban O, utfitters Navajo clothing line made critics think it’s oO ) isrespectful. This goes the same for the Ralph Lauren issue.I statey a. \ “Constantly surrounded by Native American culture. You see their WY)" names and likeness in sports. [Redskins]. You see their clothing in OVS stores. You see their traditional wear at music festivals/ costumes wo at halloween. Native American mark events like a trail of tears. Se Cultural appropriation seeps into everyday life. From sport teams to 0 logos to clothing fashion.” (Brusseler 1). Cultural Appropriation means iS it’s misunderstood. Native Americans, they figured, that this cultural appropriation has been seeping into their everyday life and \C t they are tired of it. They see their culture just being thrown yon there without caution. Just for that, this caused madness. Also, Rex” their opinion, this is insulting. Additionally, this issue of Native American cultural appropriation is connected to ancient history and traditions. We were influenced by fashion back then which caused us to design it now. We forget that sometimes it’s shameful. When designers choose to use Native designs in their clothing, they may be forgetting some important details, such as the traditional significance of this clothing, as well as the ook ‘tragic history of Native Americans in the US. Back then, they were oppressed by white men, kind of like now. It’s often white designers who are criticised. The article When Native American Appropriation is Appropriate, “Culture is fluid and today’s taboo may be tomorrow's trend. still, civility requires at least an injury- unless of course, you intend to offend. the community still suffer from a history of exploitation, discrimination or oppression.” (Scafidi 2). Over time this popular fashion trend continues to be, well, popular. Unless you intend to actually “offend”, then that’s why Natives suffer a history of discrimination. I feel like the words “exploitation”, “discrimination” and “oppression” clearly describes this situation. Some non-natives do exploit native americans. They design these clothes for their own benefit. They also somehow discriminate them in the process. Oppression is a prolonged cruel treatment. In the article Ralph Lauren Native American Ads Reveal Sad Truth About The Fashion World, it shows the ads’ designs dated back to the Old West, with jerseys, bandanas and shirts in sepia a Sami now did t+ pea Nats can There are multiple perspectives on this issue. One is that Native Americans are offended and mad hearing this. the offenders are Non-Natives.Ruth Hopkins, a writer in her 30/s who lives in Spirit Lake Tribe, said “ ‘Ralph Lauren has been doing this my whole life.’...‘He is a repeat offender. Cultural appropriation is apparently his thing’.” ‘I wouldn’t take the Pope’s hat and put it on the runway...If you’re going to be distasteful and no regard for somebody's culture, it’s shameful.’ ‘Natives are not costumes can take on and off.’ she said. ‘When people dress up in stereotypical “Indian garb’, they’re not only denying the existence of 566 distinct Tribal Nations, they’re mocking an entire group of human beings based solely on their race and heritage.’ “ She also said, “It’s absolutely terrible that they have no conscience to discontinue to do such things...called Kardashians use ‘insensitive’ and implowed famous not to pretend they are ignorant about this issue...it’s also sad. Celebrities don’t take responsibility.” (Bhasin 2). In her perspective, clearly she hates this idea of non-natives just letting people have fun with their culture. That’s bad, obviously. Not a lot of people stopped this. But, some designer and celebrities (like Karlie Kloss) had apologized and said that they didn’t know and will talk to snoever cid enen to wear ee ctoshes. HV] YEO GG AMY NGHY2. ve epecyves ia ink Anis reps pessee (sok One solution for thisNg issue or as to how do we balance tradition with modernity is both sides working together. From the Ralph Lauren source, the author said that if the non-natives knew the culture and what to design, everyone is good. (Bhasin 2). Basically, if the Non-natives and Native Americans worked together, this wouldn’t be an issue. The author shows that in this case, inspiration is key. If both sides participated, both sides benefit. This means that fashion designers will get to use the designs they love and Native American will get credit for their own designs. (Scafidi2). If you wanted to release a good line, working together would benefit both sides, which means this will not have been an issue in the first place. This issue has somehow decreased, but had risen at some point. Some are taking action but others just don’t care. People have noticed a rise in music festivals such as former Disney celebrity Vanessa Hudgens. She paraded around Coachella wearing a headdress. (Orr2). This is a rise to the situation. This happened last year, not too long ago. From the same article, “Presumably in response to this madness, Belgian designer Walter van Beirendonck had two men model headdresses that read STOP RACISM in his show during fashion week.” (Orr 3). This shows that a non-native has took an action and try to spread the word by telling people to stop being racist. Another positive action is from the same article, saying that finally now someone is putting an end to this such as Bass Coast festival. (Or3). Those two shows how this issue decreased. Overall, I haven’t heard of the issue getting better but some people are taking responsibility to stopping it. This issue has been caught in medias and entertainment such as the fashion industry. Designers create these looks that are offensive. Celebrities post pictures of them in instagram wearing headdresses. We already have the Redskins name controversy. Adding on to it is really extreme. The general population doesn’t care about offending the Native Americans because they like to ignore their voices and to think that it isn’t a big deal. It is. Look, if you’re going to a music festival like Coachella or to shop at Urban Outfitters, for example, please, please think about it. It might seem “cool”, but think about people you're hurting Nam BIGOT Date oi Roe 8 Grade Independent Ancient-Modern Expedition Press Conference Rubric : ce © Uses basic and ‘8W4 Ican appropriate for 12% |» Is appropriate for a | + Uses some produce grade by using 12% grade audience | _ relevant repetitive organized, relevant, strong by using relevant vocabulary and vocabulary and clear, and vocabulary, and vocabulary and shows basic shows little/no coherent showing and deep showing deep understand ofthe | understanding of writing that is understanding of the understanding of topic. topic. appropriate to | topic and bigger ideas. | topic + Stays on topic + Doesn'tstay on the task, * Stays on topic tays on topic most of the time. topic. Pick any metric that you want -- America’s resurgence is real. We are a better off. . Awok I've always said that recovering from the crisis of 2008 was our first order of business, and Shor on that business, America has outperformed all of our other competitors. Over the past four \ \wo Aw . years, we've put more people back to work than all other advanced economies Ye 9d4ifombined. We've now comet a point where we have the chance to reverse an even deeper 2 roblem, the decades-long erosion of middle-class jobs and incomes, and to make sure that PLN pate the middle class is the engine that powers our prosperity for decades to come. Todo that, we're going to have to make some smart choices; we've got to make the right Spucg whan! choices. We're going to have to invest in the things that secure even faster growth in (\ na. biher-paying jobs for more Americans. We're going to disagree on some things, but ek there are going to be areas of agreement and we've got to be able to make that happen. And that's going to involve compromise every once in a while, and we saw during this lame duck period that perhaps that spirit of compromise may be coming to the fore. In terms of my own job, I'm energized, 'm excited about the prospects for the next couple of Goals Gr AHL years, and I'm certainly not going to be stopping for a minute in the effort to make life better Awe Ord, forordinary Americans. And we're going to start with Carrie Sock Geta Budoff Brown of Politico. There you go, Carrie. 5 olen Question: Thank you, Mr. President. I'll start on North Korea ~- that seems to be the biggest topic today. What does a proportional response look like to the Sony hack? And did ues Sony make the right decision in pulling the movie? Or does that set a dangerous precedent when faced with this kind of situation? a Sued ak pe dv Snous Woot rug wil ve Xho Shon Wed, wakd \Wipta’ wh vat We, ‘THE PRESIDENT: Well, let me address the second question first. Sony is a corporation. It suffered significant damage. There were threats against its employees. | am sympathetic to Th ce the concerns that they faced. Having said all that, yes, I think they made a mistake. In this interconnected, digital world, there are going to be opportunities for hackers to engage in cyber assaults both in the private sector and the public sector. Now, our first \ order of business is making sure that we do everything to harden sites and prevent those Arbor kinds of attacks from taking place. When I came into office, | stood up a cybersecurity. . interagency team to look at everything that we could at the government level to prevent, these kinds of attacks. We've been coordinating with the private sector, but alot more needs to be done. We're not even close to where we need to be. And one of the things in the New Year that I hope Congress is prepared to work with us on is strong cybersecurity laws that allow for information-sharing across private sector Splat: W platforms, as well as the public sector, so that we are incorporating best practices and preventing these attacks from happening in the first place. But even as we get better, the hackers are going to get better, too. Some of them are going to be state actors; some of them are going to be non-state actors. All of them are going to be E\aAotay sophisticated and many of them can do some damage. v We cannot have a society in which some dictator someplace can start imposing censorship here in the United States. Because if somebody is able to intimidate folks out of releasing a &y satirical movie, imagine what they start doing when they see a documentary that they don’t like, or news reports that they don’t like. Or even worse, imagine if producers and distributors and others start engaging in self-censorship because they don't want to offend the sensibilities of somebody whose sensibilities probably need to be offended. So that's not who we are. That's not what America is about. ‘Again, I'm sympathetic that Sony as a private company was worried about liabilities, and thisand that andthe other. I wish they had spoken to me frst. would have fold them, do not get into a pattern in which you're intimidated by these kinds of criminal a lanahoy) attacks. Imagine if, instead of it being a cyber-threat, somebody had broken into their offices and destroyed a bunch of computers and stolen disks. Is that what it takes for suddenly you to pull the plug on something? So we'll engage with not just the film industry, but the news industry and the private sector around these issues. We already have. We will continue to do so. But | think all of us have be aabeagle to anticipate occasionally there are going to be breaches like this. They're going to be Gpla Varta \aaek val ‘wags Qveshen costly. They're going to be serious. We take them with the utmost seriousness. But we can't start changing our patterns of behavior any more than we stop going to a football game because there might be the possibility of a terrorist attack; any more than Boston didn’t run its marathon this year because of the possibility that somebody might try to cause harm, So let's not get into that way of doing business. Question Can you just say what the response would be to this attack? Would you consider taking some sort of symbolic step like watching the movie yourself or doing some sort of screening here that - THEPRESIDENT: t've got a long list of movies I'm going to be watching. (Laughter) \\ yao” Quetkv® Question Will this be one of them? ‘THEPRESIDENT: | never release my full movie list. But let's talk of the specifics of what we now know. The FBI announced today and we can i confirm that North Korea engaged in this attack. I think it says something interesting about a North Korea that they decided to have the state mount an all-out assault on a movie studio Te f aug because of a satirical movie starring Seth Rogen and James Flacco [Franco]. (Laughter.) | C Mas yah love Seth and I love James, but the notion that that was a threat to them I think gives you ko ‘some sense of the kind of regime we're talking about here. \\__ They caused alotof damage, and we wll respond. We wll respond proportionally, and : A\\ well respond in a place and time and manner that we choose. It's not something that | will YC. Deak announce here today ata press conference. More broadly, though, this points to the need for us to work with the international AdNS YLaM community to star setting up some very clear rules ofthe road in terms of how the Internet _— \utdky and cyber operates. Right now, its sort of the Wild West. And part of the problem is, Yn ae ) you've got weak states that can engage in these kinds of attacks, you've got non-state actors pie of that can do enormous damage. That's part of what makes this issue of cybersecurity so urgent. 5 Again, this is part ofthe reason why it’s going to be so important for Congress to work with Spee us and get a actual bill passed that allows for the kind of information-sharing we ye ct RU need. Because if we don’t put in place the kind of architecture that can prevent these \- attacks from taking place, tis is not just going tobe affecting movies, this is going to be wh affecting our entire economy in ways that are extraordinarily significant. ww 4 And, by the way, Ihear you're moving to Europe. Where you going to be? as Question Brussels. CTHEPRESIDENT: Brussels. ® gone Question Yes. Helping Politico start a new publication. yd ‘THE PRESIDENT: Well, congratulations. wor "Question I've been covering you since the beginning. ‘THEPRESIDENT: Well, | think -- Question It's been a long road for the both of us. ‘THEPRESIDENT: I think there's no doubt that what Belgium needsisaversion of — \ty mor Politico. (Laughter.) Question ll take that as an endorsement. ‘THE PRESIDENT. The waffles are delicious there, by the way. \rumot Works Cited Bhasin, Kim.
