Poetry out loud TPFASTT and Annotations

*Title: Before I read the poem, based on the title, I thought that the writing would mainly be
about experiences and/or feelings that the poet has or used to have with the ocean.
*Paraphrase: Deep in the ocean, the quiet caves hold no presence of a creature. Although the
waves are moving fast and violently, no disturbance or harm is beneath the peaceful sea. The
unknown creatures of the blue sea hold their thoughts and feelings there. And there are those for
whom we grief trapped there, the young and innocent. Calmly they rest in their pure sea.
Unbothered by the unquiet souls of the guilty yet caring earth. Though the earth has its faults,
peaceful sleep is always available there under the dark blue waves.
* Figurative Devices:
- Rhyme: A few words in the end of the lines dont rhyme with any other words but there
is still a noticeable rhyme scheme. First stanzas: A,B,A,C,D,E,D,F.
-Personification: Though there be fury on the waves. Meaning that the waves are
violent and fast as a result of stormy, harsh weather. The Ocean has its silent caves. Giving life
to the caves describing them as silent. The earth has guilt, the earth has care, unquiet are its

Dehmand 2
graves. Giving the earth human qualities which are the feelings of guilt and care. Also this line
represents the graves as unquiet meaning the lost souls are still very awake.
-Diction: The poet uses a very formal yet moving diction, almost as if was writing a letter
to a loved one important to him in some way.
* Shifts: Though there be fury on the waves Refers to how violent the waves of the ocean may
look at times yet, But peaceful sleep is ever there refers to how peaceful the ocean really is
beneath its waves and also how it can be a really peaceful and quiet place when the stress of the
land (reality and life) can sometimes bring a person down. The poet also uses a lot of
punctuation such as periods, commas, and colons which gives the poem more meaning and it
also makes better sense in some of the difficult lines.
*Speaker: The speaker of the poem sounds like it comes from a person who loves the ocean or
possibly something else it may represent, trying to tell a story about what the sea really holds
besides the fear that some people may have to it.
*Title (after reading more carefully): The title tells the story of the ocean by what it really has to
offer like how you should never judge a person by the outside appearance.
*Theme: The theme of the poem seems like everyone should have a peaceful place to go when
something/someone is bringing them down. It could also be the classic-not to judge a book by its
cover.

Annotations:
