When man first encountered unexplained natural phenomenon,
which he could not conquer he made it a divinity. That is how gods were born: an un-escalable mountain, an unfordable river, a rain cloud, a vast blue sky and other aspects of Nature. Sometimes he imagined the gods in male form, sometimes in female form. Human imagination at that point in history was gender neutral. All over the habited world, a number of dharmic sects started springing up, worshipping Nature. The aspects of Nature became gods and goddesses and man developed a respect for it. One can confirm this from the various Venus figurines found in Europe and from the pre-historic art found all over the world like Bhimbetka, Lascaux, Altamira etc. As men went out to hunt and women were the original seedgatherers, they were the first to discover agriculture and developed
a more intense relationship with Nature. That is why the first
dharmic and religious sects all over the world were matriarchal in nature. In Europe, such pagan, polytheistic religions sprang up in what is now Greece and Italy and in the islands of the Mediterranean. In China too people started worshipping gods and goddesses around 4000 years ago. Africa, Americas and Australia were also not behind in pagan, polytheistic and shamanistic sects. Aphrodite, Athena, Diana, Ishtar etc. were some of the great goddesses of these religious sects.
