WeshallfindthattheGodofIsraelisamongus,whentenofusshallbeabletoresista

Atthistime,thePuritanswerescatteredbetweenHollandandEnglandtryingtoavoid
persecutionfromtheAnglicists.BrewsterandRobinsonstatethereasonswhytheSeparatists
believedtheycouldhavesuccessintheNewWorld.

WeverilybelieveandtrusttheLordiswithusRightWorshipful,Ourhumbleduties,withgrateful
acknowledgmentofyoursingularlove,especiallyshowninyourearnestendeavorforourgoodinthis
weightybusinessaboutVirginia.Wehavesetdownourrequestinwriting,subscribedasyouwishedby
themajorityofthecongregationandhavesentittotheCounciloftheVirginiaCompanybyouragent,
JohnCarver,adeaconofourChurch,whomagentlemanofourcongregationaccompanies.Weneednot
urgeyoutoanymoretendercareofus,since,underGod,aboveallpersonsandthingsintheworld,we
relyuponyou,expectingthecareofyourlove,thecounselofyourwisdom,andthecountenanceofyour
authority.Notwithstanding,foryourencouragementintheworkwewillmentiontheseinducementsto
ourenterprise:

1.WeverilybelieveandtrusttheLordiswithus,untoWhomandWhoseservicewehavegiven
ourselvesinmanytrialsandthatHewillgraciouslyprosperourendeavorsaccordingtothesimplicityof
ourheartstherein.

2.Wearewellweanedfromthedelicatemilkofourmothercountry,andinuredtothedifficultiesofa
strangeandhardland,whichyetinagreatpartwehavebypatienceovercome.

3.Thepeopleare,forthebodyofthem,industriousandfrugal,wethinkwemaysafelysay,asany
companyofpeopleintheworld.

4.WeareknittogetherinabodyinamoststrictandsacredbondandcovenantoftheLord,ofthe
violationwhereofwemakegreatconscience,andbyvirtuewhereofwedoholdourselvesstraightlytied
toallcareofeachothersgood,andofthewholebyeveryone,andsomutually.5.Lastly,itis
notwithusaswithothermenwhomsmallthingscandiscourage,orsmalldiscontentmentscausetowish
themselveshomeagain.WeknowourentertainmentinEnglandandHollandweshallmuchprejudice
bothourartsandmeansbyremovalifweshouldbedriventoreturn,weshouldnothopetorecoverour
presenthelpsandcomforts,neitherindeedlookeverforourselvestoattainuntothelikeinanyotherplace
duringourlives,whicharenowdrawingtowardstheirperiods.
