Notes: Mercantilism, Pt 1

Action

Connection to History

Group 1: had a lot of money, no

marshmallows or toothpicks, could buy
or sell anything

Britain didnt have a lot of natural resources (Land, wood,

cattle), so it established colonies in America to get these resources
Britain was the mother country so it could buy from anyone or
sell to anyone
Northern Colonies: had certain natural resources (fish, lumber
for shipbuilding)

Group 2: only had toothpicks, some

money
Group 3: only had small marshmallows,
some money

Middle Colonies: produced wheat, rye, corn

Group 4: only had large marshmallows,

some money

Southern Colonies: produced tobacco, cotton, rice

Group 5: only had large and small

marshmallows, no toothpicks

Spain: had resources flowing in from South America but did not
have a lot of manufacturing power yet

Group 6: had no resources, a larger

amount of money

Netherlands: lost their colony of New York to Britain so they

had fewer natural resources

Groups 2, 3, and 4 were only allowed to

sell their products to group 1

Mercantilism: the belief that colonies existed only for the

benefit of the mother country
Colonies were ONLY allowed to sell their resources to Britain,
their mother country
Britain took the natural resources from its colonies,
manufactured them into finished goods, and then sold the goods
back to the colonies at a higher price

Group 1 assembled marshmallow towers

and sold them to groups 2, 3, and 4

Groups 5 and 6 were able to buy and sell

to groups 2, 3, and 4, but groups 2, 3,
and 4 were not allowed to buy or sell
goods to them
Group 1 ended up with the most money
out of any of the groups

Navigation Acts: Britain passed laws that said the colonies

could only sell their sugar, cotton, and tobacco to Britain

Was there any cheating going on?

Britain could not completely enforce mercantilism

Some colonies secretly sold goods to other countries or
smuggled in goods to the colonies

Britain sold more goods than it bought (exported more than it

imported)
Britain made a ton of profit
