PLANNING A NON-EUCHARISTIC LITURGY

Preparation

Date: Friday the 20th

Place: School Hall

Time: 12:00pm

Focus: The First


Sunday of Lent
Group: Year 6

Required Props (Cross, candles, symbol etc): Bible, cross, and five
violet candles, and a purple table cloth.
How will symbols be displayed/used? (What specific action?): The
bible will be used for the readings, the cross as a reminder of the
importance of the suffering Jesus faced within lent and triumphant victory
over death, a purple table cloth to represent the colour of Lent, and the
candles will be used to mark each Sunday of Lent.

Rites)Gather (Introductory

Welcome: Good afternoon all, and welcome to


our grade six liturgy. This is the opening liturgy for
the liturgical season of Lent, which is the focus for
our Religious Education unit this term. To begin
this celebration, I would like to ask everyone to
stand and join us in signing the opening hymn.
Gathering Hymn: Jesus Lead the Way- Nicolaus
Von Zinzendorf (1940)

Opening Prayer:
God of wilderness and water,
your Son was baptized and tempted as we are.
Guide us through this season,
that we may not avoid struggle,
but open ourselves to blessing,
through the cleansing depths of repentance
and the heaven-rending words of the Spirit.

Reading/s:
First Reading: Genesis 9: 8-15
God said to Noah and to his sons with him:
See, I am now establishing my covenant with you
and your descendants after you
and with every living creature that was with you:
all the birds, and the various tame and wild
animals
that were with you and came out of the ark.

to share read the first
reading. Each
student will read a
paragraph.

I will establish my covenant with you,


that never again shall all bodily creatures be
destroyed
by the waters of a flood;
there shall not be another flood to devastate the
earth.
God added:
This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to
come,
of the covenant between me and you
and every living creature with you:
I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign
of the covenant between me and the earth.
When I bring clouds over the earth,
and the bow appears in the clouds,
I will recall the covenant I have made
between me and you and all living beings,
so that the waters shall never again become a
flood
to destroy all mortal beings.

Second Reading: Mark 1: 12-15


The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,
and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan.
He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him.

After John had been arrested,


Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of
God:
This is the time of fulfillment.
The kingdom of God is at hand.
Repent, and believe in the gospel.
Prayer/Refection/Action:
Prayer: God of the living,
through baptism we pass from the shadow of
death
to the light of the resurrection.
Remain with us and give us hope
that, rejoicing in the gift of the Spirit
who gives life to our mortal flesh,
we may be clothed with the garment of
immortality,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Action: A student is to light the first candle,


marking off the first Sunday of Lent.

Dismissal: Lent is a special time within this


community. Rich with symbolism and hope, Lent
provides us all with the opportunity to renew
ourselves spiritually and prepare us for the
resurrection of Jesus. Id like to thank everyone for
participating today, and I hope that youll
continue to support our students journey through
this wonderful season.
