We use can and cant to express a number of
circumstances in English. In this chapter we will look
at how can is used to express ability.
Affirmative use of can (for ability):
FORMATION
Subject + can + bare infinitive of verb
I can drive.
He can speak seven languages.
We can tap dance.
You can sing.
They can play the guitar
Negative use of can:
FORMATION
Subject + cant + bare infinitive
I cant sing.

You cant speak any languages.


She cant see the sea from your balcony.
We cant eat cheese. Were allergic.
They cant understand the Cyrillic alphabet.
Interrogative for can:
FORMATION
Can + subject + verb
Can you sing?
Can she dance?
Can they speak English?
