PART B (16+16+8 = 40 Marks)
6. a)

A composite bar made up of aluminium and steel is held between two supports as shown in
figure. The bars are stress-free at a temperature of 40c, what will be the stresses in the two
bars when the temperature is 20 C if
i)
ii)

The supports are non-yielding

The supports come nearer to each other by 0.1 mm. It can be assumed that the change in
temperature is uniform all along the length of the bar. Take ESteel = 210 G N/m2,
Ealuminium= 74 G N/m2, Steel= 11.7 10-6 / C, aluminium =23.4 10-6/ C,

b)

A Steel tube, 2.4 cm external diameter and 1.8 cm internal diameter encloses a copper rod of

1.5 cm diameter to which it is rigidly connected at the two ends. If at a temperature of 10 C

there is no longitudinal stress, calculate the stresses in the rod and the tube when the
temperature is raised to 200 C? Take ESteel = 2.1 105 N/ mm2, ECopper= 1.0 105 N/ mm2,
Steel= 11 10-6 / C, Copper =18 10-6 / C,
