Lesson Plan Vision
8th Grade Science Standards
Strand 1 : Concept 2 Scientific Testing

PO 1. Demonstrate safe behavior and appropriate procedures (e.g., use and

care of technology, materials, organisms) in all science inquiry
PO 4. Perform measurements using appropriate scientific tools (e.g., balances,
microscopes, probes, micrometers).
PO 5. Keep a record of observations, notes, sketches, questions, and ideas
using tools such as written and/or computer logs.

Strand 5 : Concept 1 Properties and Changes of Properties in Matter

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

PO 1. Identify different kinds of matter based on the following physical properties:

states
density
boiling point
melting point
solubility

Objective
Following the directions in their lab manual, students in small groups will experiment
with changing states of matter and record their measurements in their lab notebook.
Students will complete their data analysis worksheet by the next day using the data they
collect to support their knowledge about the physical properties of matter. By the end of
the lesson, students will be able to explain the relationship between temperature and
solubility.
Sub-Objectives
1. Students will demonstrate collaboration skills in groups with diverse talents.
2. Students will practice safe, timely laboratory protocol by following their
instructions explicitly and using the appropriate safety equipment at all times.
Information
Prior to the experiment, the teacher will review the following concepts (taught in a
previous lesson):

Heat is the transfer of energy from a substance at a higher temperature to a

substance at a lower temperature.

Adding energy (heating) atoms and molecules increases their motion, resulting
in an increase in temperature, and removing energy (cooling) atoms and
molecules decreases their motion, resulting in a decrease in temperature.
The amount of a substance that can dissolve in a liquid (at a particular
temperature) is called the solubility of the substance. The substance being
dissolved is called the solute, and the substance doing the dissolving is called
the solvent.

Model
Teacher will demonstrate the lab procedures in front of the class. They will point out the
proper safety and measurement techniques that students will use. In addition, they will
review the grading criteria for the data analysis worksheet that the students will
complete with their experimental data.
Check for Understanding
Before the teacher does their demonstration, they will ask students about the
vocabulary terms and chemistry concepts outlined in Information. The teacher will call
on students to define terms and explain concepts, and poll the entire class with a
thumbs-up method to determine if everyone is clear on this concept.
Guided Practice
Students will perform the experiment in their small groups. The teacher will continually
check up on the groups and ensure they are correctly and safely carrying out the
procedures.
Closure
Before they may clean up their lab station and begin working on their worksheet,
students will have their lab notebooks checked by the teacher. The teacher will approve
them to move on if the students correctly completed the experiment and have scientific
observations and data written in their notebook.
Independent Practice
After collecting their data from the experiment, students will complete the data analysis
worksheet. Students can use any remaining class time to work on it with their group or
complete it individually at home.
