Lithium

How does your element interact with biological systems? See if you can
explore to mechanistic detail

Chemical Reaction 2 Li(s) + 2H2O -> 2 LiOH (aq) + H2

In the Body, Lithium affects neurotransmitters which are involved in the
bodys stress reactions
o One of the two chemicals lithium affects is Norepinephrine. More
lithium in the body limits the amount of norephinephrine that the body
processes. Norepinephrine increases your heart rate and sends sugar
energy or glucose enriched blood to tensing muscles in response to
fear
o The other chemical is Serotonin. Lithium allows the human body to
synthesize serotonin much better. Serotonin is important because the
amount of serotonin indicates how relaxed you are

What is a potential biology-related application for your element:

Lithium carbonate in them can treat manic-depressive disorders, otherwise

known as bipolar disorder
Lithium chloride is used in molecular biology to selectively precipitate RNA
(ribonucleic acid)
