The World of

Computers and their

History
Made by Patrick

INTRO TO COMPUTERS
Computers are now the main
instrument for communication
and information storage.

Colleges, businesses, spies. All of

these use computers to store,
organize, or relay information

Computers have become smaller

and faster in about 60 years.

1930S AND CHARLES BABBAGE

(1791-1871) Charles
Babbage
Charles Babbage is considered the
father of computing because of his
success in building a calculator

One of his inventions is the Analytical

Engine. It is characterized by being
able to perform any kind of
mathematical calculation
It is used in computers even today

The First Generation

Vacuum tubes are the main
characteristic of this generation.
These took up entire rooms because of their
primitiveness
Vacuum tubes are used for circuits
Magnetic drums are used as memory storage

Machine Language: the lowest level of

programming
It used two elements:
Printouts: output
Punched cards and paper tape: input

Two main computers of this era are the

Univac and Eniac

SECOND GENERATION
1950S

The second generations main

characteristic are transistors

Transistors are better than vacuum tubes

and therefore replaced vacuum tubes

They were invented in 1947

Transistors were smaller, faster, and

cheaper than vacuum tubes.

A problem was that they produced vast heat

They had a magnetic core which helped

guide the magnetic fields so they did not
interfere with the computer itself

LARC was the first supercomputer

THIRD GENERATION

IBM STARTS TO IMPROVE COMPUTERS

BY INITIATING RESEARCH
RAPID DATA MANIPULATION

A PROBLEM IS THAT ALL DATA WAS

LOST WHEN THE POWER WENT OUT

A RAMAC HAD 25,000 PUNCHED

CARDS AND THIS IS AN EQUIVALENT
OF 2MB IN THE PRESENT TIME

1964 - 1971

Fourth Generation
Present
The main goal now is
communication
Computers have been developed
to respond quickly, have an easier
way to use it in a more convenient
way and have a hardware
Memory is also a great
development because now we can
have terabytes of information if
we have the correct tools

FIFTH
GENERATION
THE FUTURE

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

A few advancements in the study and

development of AI is voice recognition.

Apple and Samsung have each their

own AI. For apple it is Siri and for
Samsung it is Speech Recognizer

Goals for AI:

to understand natural language

To be able to be capable of learning
To be self - organized

THE BINARY CODE

OVERVIEW

BINARY CODEIS A SYSTEM THAT

REPRESENTS NUMBERS, LETTERS,
COMMANDS, IMAGES AND SOUNDS.
IT USES ONLY 1 AND 0 TO REPRESENT ALL
OF THIS
EACH LETTER HAS 8 NUMBERS AND IS
CALLED A BYTE.
THEN INVENTOR OF THE BINARY CODE WAS
ALSO THE MAN WHO INVENTED CALCULUS:
GOTTFRIED WILHELM LEIBNIZ

The Binary Code Details

Letters

Binary

Numbers

Binary notation
Uses spaces every 8 places to help
count
1 = 00000001
19 = 00010011
